Beautiful wood grain hard wood and yet is considered to be a nuisance tree in Florida
All excited when I picked it up and did a Google search on what type of wood it was by the bark. how funny it is known as Paper Bark Tree also Melaleuca Tree Originally from Australia and used in Florida's wetlands but it became very invasive and took over all other local vegetation.Beautiful color and wood grain I wonder why it's not harvested for hobbies and other wood projects

I like the enthusiasm about finding wood for turning. When ever see tree taken down I have to check if I get some.

Hi Al, The wood is amazing and I've never heard of it before,,,I doubt if it grows up north? It looked like it turns pretty easy but sands tough! It may be the camera but I don't see anything wrong with the finish! Thanks for the video,,, Tom

It's lovely to see one of our Melaleuca's being turned. If you come to Australia, they look wonderful in their natural habitat. I don't know if you've ever heard of them, but I also love the Eucalyptus haemastoma, the scribbly gum. Larvae from the Ogmograptis scribula moth make the most amazing patterns in the bark. I really enjoy your channel, thanks for sharing your creativity with us.

Thanks for the nice compliment and the info as well. I live in Florida and have an abundance of woods and it seems every tree that gets introduced to Florida becomes a nuisance tree as everything grows in this tropical weather. I have been fortunate enough to have even found Rosewood. I can't say I have heard of the woods you mention

The finish didn't seem too bad from my side. It's always nice to experiment with different woods Nice although this one gave you a bad way to go Al.

+Jack Maravola That wood got me started on using sanding sealer

Beautiful bowl Albert, I like the shape with the missing piece. I must agree with Adze, that maybe sanding sealer will make it easier to get a good finish. Take care Mike

Thanks Mike maybe it's my approach but I tried sealer as well and it seems to drink anything I put on it LOL. Unfortunately the wood turns quite a bit lighter when it dries. the newest spinning top vase was done with a log of that Melaleuca. Take care my friend.

I'm a little north of you now, in the Crystal River area. Moved up here 5yrs ago when I retired. Lots of different trees available here. I just picked up some sweet gum but haven't made anything yet.

Beautiful wood Al. Paperbark Maple as I know it. Finishing can be easier in reverse, the grain "lays" weirdly and it may need a 1000 grit. Very absorbent try sanding sealer a couple of coats.

Hello Al, I have been a fan of yours for a long time and just found this one. Her in north Australia where I live we do not even try to burn T Tree let alone use it as a wood. . It is actually grown in plantations for the oil that comes from its leaves. We vregard it as a very soft rubbish wood. Look up Mulga, Gidgee and Hairy Oak to find some real hardwoods. With a sharp chisel you could probably go straight to 400 or even 800 grit. Ask Erik Anderson, I sent him some.Could send you some if you get in touch with me. Love your stuff mate.

Malaleuca Linarlifolia, call also Snow in Summer, of the family Myrtle. Had a huge one in my garden, magnificent in flowers, did not know it look so good but hard to shine ,mybe it will look better with age, some woods need more aging than others

Just found your videos, nice work! I assume your in south Florida if you picked up Melaleuca wood. I lived in the Miami area the first 55 years of my life and never heard of anyone using it for anything. It's nice to see you try things not everyone is doing.

Thank you Ed I am glad you found my channel and that you liked it enough to comment. I do live in FL but in the West coast Sarasota. I lived in Miami for 2 years and loved it there. Yes I do indeed try any thing that is wood, worst that can happen is it would not be tunable like Jacaranda LOL Now that is a tree that can't be turned but Melaleuca is a dream to turn too bad it turns very light but still some interesting grain.

+Al Furtado (Wood Turning) Hi let me start by saying your bowl turned out nice but near the end of you video you seemed frustrated that the outside of the Melaleuca paper bark tree would not take a shine but the inside of your bowl did take a shine have a look 14:24 of you video and you will see the inside of the bowl and what a beautiful shiny bowl it was

Hey Al nice looking wood, what's wrong with a matte finish?
@AlFurtado
@AlFurtado 9 лет назад
Lenny what's wrong with a dull paintjob on a nice car? same thing it just shows all the hairline scratches not just a matte finish.

Jacaranda is native to tropical central & south America. There is no Australian "version"!
