In 1863, prospectors discovered significant amounts of Gold, Lead, and Silver in the mountains that are now part of the Galena mining district. Soon after this discovery, the Galena ghost town came to life.
In the early 1870s, the population began to increase liberally. In 1873, there were 300 residents, two hotels, and four general stores.
Shortly after 1875, the population exploded, creating a boom town. Galena now contained a cemetery and city park. The population was now well above 450 residents.
The population began to decrease in the early 1880s.
Tragedy struck in 1889 when the mill and assay office burned down. - because of the decreasing population coupled with the fire. The mill owner decided not to rebuild. Due to this inconvenience, active mines had to truck raw minerals down the mountain for processing, which was a major undertaking and a great expense that made mining nearly unprofitable for the smaller mine operations. Then all the mines shut down, and the once thriving town was essentially abandoned.
However, there were some revivals. In the early 1900s, three mines began operation. But none managed to last even a decade.
In the 1960s, two mines began active operations. And were abandoned in the 1970s.
This marks the end of mining for Galena. Now, it sits permanently abandoned, without any other revivals. But, the shell of this once important town still remains. Join us as we explore this unique ghost town with a rich and luscious history.
This is part one of a two-video series. Be sure to checkout part two: • An Amazing Find Inside...

I’m guessing cyanide barrels, placer mine pit, pumps for, water, stamp mill, rock crusher, tumbler. Might be good area for a metal detector

Is this south Dakota or Nevada, just curious. Great video. Wow snow in the middle of summer. This has to be over 5000 ft elevation.

The building was probably offices and the ceiling wasn’t falling down if you look at it closely, it’s probably a vent hood of some sort because why would they put wood sideways on the wall to hold it up?

Interesting town and very old. Left behind Caterpillar scraper was a cable operated pull type. Cable operated construction equipment became obsolete in the 1950's. Probably only value when abandoned was scrap metal pricing.

It really sucks people destroy these places instead of keeping them nice so you can stay there and camp out? Really stupid people! Unless the bank took it back and the owner destroyed it?

Someday......I will find the home of a graffiti "artist" and COVER IT FLOOR TO CEILING with my own brand of "artwork". Then have a hidden camera so I could enjoy the reaction.

Barbed wire is animal fencing, they had their own meat or milk. Possibly just horses.

Thanks for watching! It's definitely an unusual sight to see snow in the summer, especially when it's still light outside in the evening. You're right; the location does have some high elevation, this was filmed in North Nevada, near Idaho. Stay tuned for more adventures!

Dave you should invest in snake gaitors if you are hiking in areas where you have seen rattlesnakes before. Roughly $50

I have a pair of gaitors in my car. I don't always use them, but if somewhere looks like Snake Haven, I wear them!
