The Ancient City of Myra, located in the Demre district of Antalya, is one of the most important metropolises bearing the traces of Lycia. Centuries ago, six big cities, including Patara, had the right to vote three times in the Lycian League. Myra was one of them.
Although it did not have a coast to the sea, thanks to the Andriake Port it came to the fore in maritime trade. The gigantic theater built during the Roman period was one of the proofs that the city was highly developed. However, as a result of floods and earthquakes, the region, which had magnificent artifacts, remained under alluvium. The archaeological studies that have been going on since 2009 under the chairmanship of Prof. Dr. Nevzat Çevik, the works of Myra that arouse interest all over the world have been discovered. Especially the terracotta collection found in the 2020 excavation season was on the agenda of archeology in USA and Europe. In 2021, a ceramic from the Chalcolithic period was found for the first time in the city. The fingerprint of his master was on the 5,000-year-old ceramic. Excavation Director Prof. Dr. Nevzat Çevik, the cultural wealth of the ancient city of Myra "That richness is really waiting for us under these lands.
