I’m a firm believer in maintenance and preventative maintenance,I had my own equipment for years,I bought a new Freightliner in 2000,I’m the only person that drove it,put 1.4 million miles on it,still had the original clutch,ujoints,king pins,tie rods etc..had a c15 cat that I did an overhead on every spring,only ever replaced 1 injector in 1.4 million,I spent a lot of money to not have breakdowns,grease and oil is cheap insurance in my mind,

Up north, during winter, its easy to say, "Its 2 cold 2 grease today. I'll do it when it warms up more." but that might not be 4 another week or so. The best time of the day 2 grease is at the end of the shift or shut down, when the machine is warm, when your tired, hungry, wet, pooped, and just want 2 go home, or stop at the "Tavern". A

I get pissed at these machine operator's who puff out their chest and brag how good they are, first thing I ask them is how many times do you grease your machine? Oh I don't do that the mechanic does that, bullshit the mechanic is in the shop not in the field if you don't grease a machine your not a good operator, the best operator's I ever saw greased their machines everyday before they go to work.

But thats better than buying parts/bearings/bushings/pins. years ago, right out of high school, I got a job as a heavy equipment, "Greaser", taking care of scrappers, dozers, dragline, etc, on a road building job. The grease came in 55 gallon drums, with an "Air Greaser" it was fun. The old mechanic would grind my ass and say, "Hey "Oil Slick" yer using/wasting way 2 much grease, I would say, "Well dats better n buying parts, A"
If you want your stuff greased on the regular, the best way to see it done is buy the support supplies with the grease. Good quality disposable rubber gloves, 4 rolls of shop towels, 2 bottles of the good hand cleaner, and a good battery powered grease gun. Keep the grease and the hand cleaner in the heat of the cab in winter. The easier and cleaner it can be the better the chances it will get done. As for seeing the grease gets to the right place every time, that is on the guy with the grease gun in his hand.
Best to see the old grease come out a bit if possible. The only way to ensure you get fresh lube in the assembly. Even so, if you have softer metal in the bearing, it will eventually wear. The old planetaries had brass shafts in a cast steel housing. The brass shafts wore, at least on my machines. Saw the brass filings whenever changed out the 80 90 lube.
Had that happen to me too, at the wide ange joint with dog bones middle of the crane on a Ponsse Wisent. Not a big fan of the distribution blocks, its sure is more time to use invidual nipples at each spot and need to climb on the machine. But atleast you spot the greasing failure early.
Are you using 50-90 gear oil? Years ago....I had a couple of old road tractors that had automatic greasing...only had to grease the drive line. I used 50-90 gear oil and never had a problem. It was and timed air driven pump system.
did you ever try a Universal speedometer cable core to clean out tubing with bends in it.. i use it on fuel lines all the time.. then a quick flush.. i sometimes push it all the way thru and unwind some then with the variable speed drill power it out so the frayed end cleans the inside of the tubing even better. might want to look in the manual and see how many pumps of the grease gun are factory spec for the pivot assembly. use some white or bright florescent color fingernail polish to paint around the pivot zirc fitting. 20 uga dogas with the grease gun please . or how many the manual says to add. you may also if you have any of that great green gasket paper.. make a disc that fits over the shaft tightly above the lower bearing. to shield it from any debris falling back in.. lastly if you got the old lower bearing out without damaging the races.. SKF and other bearing manufacturers do have a whole factory set up to ship expensive bearings to.. where they regrind the races and install oversize rollers. to rebuild the bearing to specs.. depends on your cost for the bearing and what they charge to rebuild it. its just a thought .. you might never need to do another.. but you never know.. any way. if the bearing is going in the scrap bin.. knock the rollers out.. they make excellent paper weights for the desk and bowling pins for the kids .. engrave your company name and phone number on them to give to customers for their desk.. to remind them you are there when the bearing bites the road..
How common is it with automatic central lubrication? I think i common problem with that it's settings is wrong. 4min runtime every hour is perfect. (I think) And use fat that works even then is coold. 00 grease or 01 works fine.
I think manufacturers build to demand. Guess I'm guilty. Would probably pick cab comforts over an easy to access auto lube/grease bank if I had to make a choice to stay in budget. More willing to pay for comfort than maintenance assist.
