Owen Wiseman you, and also I do actually have something to do with this build. Our viewing encourages and uplifts the ones doing the work. We ask questions so that they can give us the benefit of their experience. This helps them to actually think of the why and where of how or why things are done a certain way. Many things they have studied out in the past but are constantly learning. This makes them better at what they do. So you and I have a very small part, but it is an important part of the build. Thanks Scott and crew.!

How nice it is that you hold your contractors (and friends) in such high esteem. There are read-between-the-lines lessons to be had here. If a man can be measured by the company he keeps, well, keep up the good work.

A man is not measured by his wallet's thickness, though by his ability to work with those, hes grown accustomed to, in the real, dirty hands get it done world, these relationships are just as important as those with your money source.

There is something beautiful and majestic in watching a skilled equipment operator level the grade like this. I had the wonderful experience of trying to do it myself a few years ago and it wasn't nearly as easy as this operator makes it look.

I've worked in hundreds of crawlspaces. I have rarely had the pleasure of working in one that was even flat, only a handful of times I worked in one that didn't have a bunch of sharp rocks and debris under the vapor barrier, and NEVER worked in a crawlspace with perfectly flat crush and run laid smooth for the sake of the worker. Send me a plane ticket and I'll come work for free in that crawlspace. Great work guys. And thanks again for taking the advice given a year ago that I also supported of building a crawlspace rather than a slab. It's so much more relatable for us to learn from now and it's far more repair/remodel friendly for the life of the house.

Bless your heart for making room for the "masons" to have material and man. Most of the time we only had room (almost) for our feet and had to bend down or reach up to get material. Wears you out before you get a good start! A true professional you are and this is going to be a great build, Greg.

Essential Craftsman, I've been watching your channel for over a year now and I love the detail your provide! I'm 21 years old and considering building a house of my own in the next 10 years. I have a lot of questions mainly about details everyone else seems to skip over. Things like how to frame floor and ceiling joists, how to determine load bearing to prevent flooring from sagging. How to frame doors and windows and affixing 2nd level framing to the 1st floor. Things that can be found by looking around, but would be better if done by one highly educated source like yourself! I look forward to all the videos to come and hope you share those little details and secrets with all of us! Keep up the great work!

Nice to see proper compaction. Most so-called 'builders' don't have a clue and many so-called grading contractors aren't much better. Then when the driveway, sidewalks and foundation settles and cracks, they blame it on insufficient rebar, groundwater or whatever excuse will absolve them.

It must be nice to find competent and professional contractors to work with... here in south Texas, nobody answers the phone, nobody shows up when they say they will, nobody does anything straight, square, level, plumb, true (forget relying on concrete to be flat), under half of them speak english, they often ask us to fix things that they should be prepared for, and we are _constantly_ having to make up for the shortcomings in everything they do. Except for our flooring guy; he does good work.

What an extremely valuable resource these videos are to anyone who is building a home for the first time. Thank you Scott and all who are involved in producing these videos. Building a home these days is truly expensive. Even the modest budgets will be enhanced and value added simply by viewing these videos that include tons of details that can be overlooked and costing a first time home builder lots of cash they may not have. This kind of free exchange of information is what RU-vid should always be about, it's why I tune in and I was a broadcast producer for many years. Keep up the great work Scott and I look forward to your next contribution. Just look at all the great comments, I only wish I could have had this kind of content on broadcast television.

Yep.....always great to find a good “team”, from the contractor.....all the way down to the subs, & other crews they have coming in to build the “structure” for someone. Can always tell a good team, from a “great” team from watching the beginning steps of starting a project.....it sets the “stage” & can determine if the job is gonna go well, or rocky at times..... Never fun working on a job that nobody gets along with anyone else....makes for a long hard day, in my opinion. Thx for the updates & showing us this.

@Essential Craftsman So excited for this.I'm already learning valuable information such as extra consideration when digging foundations out. I love the way you think about things ahead of time and plan for them. That already shows how great of a build this is going to be. I wish I could post the picture of the 150' stack block retaining wall that I've built behind our new home. It's primarily inspired by and confidence supported by your content. I've built a wall that would have been financially infeasible if I had to purchase the rock and paid to have it placed, in lieu of digging and placing all the rock myself with the assistance of one other paid laborer. I'm so glad that you are making a decent floor on that crawlspace. My parents purchased an old house with a modern addition and a bunch of the floor insulation fell down and needed replacement. I discovered that the contractor had seen fit to not only leave any rocks but also use it a dumping ground. I calculated that I removed about 2 tons of 1" to 3" rocks/concrete via 5 gallon buckets. This was about a 12' x 30' area. I was about to track down the psychopath responsible and force feed him a couple of buckets worth and glue the rest to his driveway.

Very interesting information in this video. First, I find it interesting that the retaining walls are poured, reinforced concrete and yet the foundation walls are block. Secondly, when I do plan design I include a detailed site plan that has calculated depths for bottom of footing, rough grade, finished grade, drainage direction and estimated slope, etc. Isn't it counter intuitive to detail a foundation wall without considering the depth of back-fill? The height of your fill against a foundation wall is a major consideration when designing the wall and its connection(s) to the house. Our permitting authority would never allow the contractor to set the depth of footing. I suppose it is such a different environment where you are building that these are not nearly as critical. You obviously have more rainfall to deal with and decidedly less frost penetration! 🤣🤣 I do love to watch folks that adeptly run those excavating machines. Even the skid steer operator was great. And that guy placing the boulders, what can I say! Great fun watching your progress pal.
@doctorwork

Yes, higher is generally better, as you said, but I think it's important to also mention that there might be height restrictions for the finished building, so you can't always go arbitrarily high. You might actually have to work downwards from that restriction sometimes.
