If you've just passed your UK amateur radio Foundation exam, you might be wondering what happens next. How do you get your callsign? What sort of radio and antenna should you look at? How do you make that first contact? What else do you need to know? This short video answers some of the questions we're often asked by brand-new Foundation licence-holders.

Hi Pete, Hi guys, I hope you're all safe and well. A massive THANK YOU, I've literally passed my Foundation exam a few hours ago (thanks Martin!) and I could not have done it without your course. Hopefully I'll get my call-sign soon and we'll talk to each other through the magic of the wireless... Now, where's that Internediate exam guide... Keep up the AWESOME work, stay safe. PS: coffees on the way... 👍🏻

Many thanks Essex ham , I did my exam online today and passed due to the course you provide , I don’t think I would have ever done it if it wasn’t online due to work commitments , many thanks for all your hard work providing this course, Ian.

Very nice to see you again! You helped me pass the exam in July. Essex Ham, and you in particular, Pete, have done more for amateur radio than almost anyone else. Thanks. Mike.

Join your local radio club. You should already be a member of a club if you've passed your test. Your club will guide you into anything you want to do.

I did my online course back at start of lockdown but I've been unable to get an exam done because of work, may have to do another course to refresh my knowledge.

Hi Pete, Thank you for this video. I passed earlier this month having completed your course, and technically it wasn't a struggle, but I do find the 'talking bit' more anxiety inducing than I realized I would. Hopefully this video is timely listening for me and will give me the confidence to have a few more QSO's and feel more relaxed. I know this is a training video, and as you've said before is more formal in nature than many real conversations, but at what point do you think it's acceptable to revert to the operators name, as the "them callsign: yourself callsign" convention is just another thing for me to get right while I'm struggling to overcome my mic shyness / think of something interesting to say. Thanks again for you dedication to helping more of us into the hobby. Dan M7DHX

Hi Dan. Regarding giving your callsign, you don't need to give it every over, and you just have to comply with the licence wording about making sure people know who you are. If you're just chatting with a mate, you don't need to give your call very often. If you're chatting with someone who gives his callsign each over, they may expect you to do the same. If you're in a group, it's common to give your callsign more frequently. Everyone's different. Best advice I can offer is to a) listen to get a feel for how others do it, and b) if you know others who've passed recently, build up your confidence by chatting to them. Does that help? Pete

Salvage 1 .... Many people with dyslexia have been able to pass. Your friend will need to study, and there are several ways he can do this. He’ll need to discuss any special requirements he has with the RSGB for the actual exam.
