One of the most enduring national brand characters to appear in the early days of advertising is everyone's favorite sartorially gifted legume, Mr. Peanut. In this episode, host Tory Altman joins Kathleen Franz, professor at American University, to talk about the history of "spokes-characters" in the United States, and how Mr. Peanut got his classic look.
The "Founding Fragments" video series gets up close and personal with historical treasures in the collection of the National Museum of American History. Subscribe to our channel to find out about future episodes, or learn more at americanhistory.si.edu/connect....

Ever notice how baking items have retained older logos than almost anywhere else? what's up with Clabber Girl baking powder? People want to buy the product they remember seeing in their mother's kitchen.

Hello National Museum of American History. I was curious. What character was the very first icon used in advertisement of a product? And if there is one that is first for a localized product and another used for a national product could you tell me what both of those icons are. I tried to google it but only came up with top 10 or top 25 lists of the most famous ones. I would really love to know this bit of american history if you could tell me. I didnt know about this channel but glad I found it. I was watching American Pickers new season episode 1 and they visited this guy in Missouri who had this really huge Mr P Nut animatronics machine. He is on top of a peanut roaster and his hands are holding this bar and when you turn him on his arms turn the bar that turns the peanuts while they roast. And also his body moves back and forth. It looks like it is about 6 feet tall or so and I believe they said it is made of paper mache. Thanks for your time and thanks for posting such interesting videos on iconic americana icons.

All very nice, except there is NO evidence that the Planters Nut and Chocolate Company ran any kind of public contest seeking a company mascot/spokesman anywhere in 1916.

Dude, he had to go. Kids can't take Peanut Butter and jelly sandwiches to school because other kids are allergic to peanuts. He had to go because the image of a smiling peanut is no longer acceptable to people with peanut allergies.
