Speedonthewater.com took a fun, but cold, first-impression ride in the Fountain Powerboats 34 Thunder Cat with twin Mercury Racing 450R engines in December on the Pamlico River in Washington, N.C.
I never thought I would see the day , Mercury is the absolute best in the world, I always thought that belonged to Johnson or Evinrude , they put out great motors back in the day , but Mercury has outclassed them to be the best ever
@unorriginal it's sad that OMC and Johnson Evinrude are gone , my dad had a 200 Johnson on a 77 Boston Whaler Revenge , it ran like a top , oh well , gotta love those big Mercury now
I remember the old mercuries being thin and broke down all the time or Johnson's were always running but Johnson and Evinrude just took it as they were the best and they wouldn't be challenged while Mercury kept going back to the lab and kept on building till they've now taking over the a large part of the market. Yamaha Suzuki have great programs but they also have the cars ATVs and they have engines in absolutely everything while Mercury is boats only
Love to have the boat and love Mercury outboards. Had them growing up . Just keep them serviced . They are like women have to give them attention every now and then.
@@stevemccormick4938 Not with four of these. There is a bit of an issue regarding power to weight. Of course you can run four on a 40' Skater, and run at maybe 135-140 mph, but many will still choose,a pair of 860's or 1100's in that situation. There are obviously benefits in regards to maintenance, but many who buy the large cats are in it for speed and the bling factor. As far as quads and quintets go, I think the market will be with the large center consoles mostly.
Are these type of boats expensive? I just started getting into boats and was wondering what are these boats used for besides going fast? I kinda want one
Mercury is taking the lead in outboard industries 7 Marine is not taking the lead anymore because they went out of business Mercury soon will be the leaders of the outboard market
Just want I always wanted to do ..Spend a Gazillion dollars on one of Reggie's boats and not hear anything but wind ....well I'm telling you people if I'm gonna part with that much cash I want to see and hear more than just gelcoat and plastic I want to see Chrome I wanna hear Big block Chevy race engines ...but that's just me .
900 HP on the water is not a lot. I've put 1500 HP in a 12 meter Fountain ICBM and only 85 mph. It's all in the hull. But those motorcycle 4 stroke engines that turn 8,000 rpm converted to marine is a plus
Americans are used to giving speeds in mph, especially the fast boats. The yachts and other slower boats use knots. I like to use both to get used to the conversion tables. My boat ran 80 knots WOT which is just over 92mph. 100knots is just over 115mph and so on up the speedometer and that's another thing; our speedos use mph so we are more in tune with that measure.
@@dieseldog00 The whole global navigation grid system is based off nautical miles and knots, that's how you navigate. Anyone who talks about mph on the sea isn't worth his salt.
@@shingnosis I guess everyone who has ever built and owned a performance boat isn't worth his salt, huh? Odd comment for someone watching a video about a catamaran with gauges that spit out numbers in mph.
Yes weird thing. Historical I suppose, and may be because in mph the number is a bit higher than in knots, so more spectacular, and I suspect, that may have come from someone in the beggininigs of powerboat development, bragging about his boat speed, and cheating using "miles per hour" not "nautical miles per hour", and then others following the trend. I'm just theorizing though
A little more than $300,000 with the base engines-twin 300Rs-and $380,000+ with 450s. www.speedonthewater.com/inside-sotw-mag-fountain-34-thunder-cat-profile-red-hot/
You can't see the point in going boating fkr an entire day? What about ponerruns, fun runs and shootouts? You don't see it because you don't know what the entire powerboating scene is and has to offer. Keep an open mind if you don't understand what it is you are watching.
Reggie has an attitude I never like. Even met him once. He always thought his v bottoms were superior to other boats. Look at the lightning or fever series. You pay for a 32 foot boat and that included swim deck and nose beak. So now you are left with a 28 foot effective hull. Now he builds a sport Cat? After years of bashing cats? I'm glad be did. It's a nice boat..
S F. His V’s. Are superior. How many times does Fountain have to win national championships In offshore racing before you give R. Fountain credit? The guy is about as grass roots as you can get. That attitude your talking about is what drives a man to be the very best at his craft. I dont need him to be my friend. I respect the man for biulding beautiful powerful boats.
