I was a teenager during the 80s, and most people tend to say how the music that was popular during their teenage years was the best era of music. Top 40 was definitely seeing better days during this period. I know a lot of it was labelled alternative, but how alternative could it have been seeing as Top 40 radio was pumping it 24/7?

A band being a one-hit wonder is not a reflection on the quality of music, but simply an objective statement of whether or not they had more than one charting single. Devo and Jimi Hendrix are technically one-hit wonders, but they've got tons of great music. Stacy's Mom is their only song to chart on the US, US Adult, US Alternative, US Pop, Australian, Canadian, Netherlands, New Zealand, and United Kingdom charts. That said, you are correct if you factor in the US Alternative charts. Stacy's Mom is not their only US Alternative Top 40 hit, nor even their highest charting among them. Radiation Vibe hit 14 on that chart and Denise hit 34, while Stacy's Mom hit 31.

@JACKSON EWING generally, when a band is cited as a one hit wonder, they're specifically referring to songs that reach at least #40 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the US and/or the UK Singles Charts. Genre-specific charts are not taken into consideration.

@@DLZ2000 The "one top-40 hit" designation is an absolutely asinine, reductionist way of determining one-hit wonders. I will not live in a world where a-ha is not a one-hit wonder (because of "The Sun Always Shines on TV," a top-40 hit that exactly zero people could remember 3 years later much less now) but the Grateful Dead and Jimi Hendrix supposedly are. There is no magical formula that says an act is a one-hit wonder or not--some acts are huge in Europe or the U.S. but only had 1 breakthrough hit elsewhere. Some acts are album acts or touring acts, as the Dead were for decades. Sometimes a longtime cult figure breaks through with one mainstream hit, like Warren Zevon or Lou Reed or...yes, the Fountains of Wayne. I don't consider them a 1HW.

@@pronkb000 again, words and phrases have meanings. It has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of the band's music. But the fact is, by the definition of the phrase one hit wonder, a band will forever have that designation if only one of their songs charted. It's not a criticism of the band, just the definition of the phrase. It cannot ever be defined by the subjective assessment of the music, no matter how good or bad that music is.

@@DLZ2000 The definition according to whom? The One-Hit Wonder Fairy? And I'm not talking about quality of music--I *hate* the Grateful Dead. But calling them "one-hit wonders" is asinine when they were one of the most popular touring acts in America for 30 years. They weren't a singles band.

This whole album is great. I remember buying it when I'd never even heard of Fountains of Wayne. I read an album review when it came out, and when I read Adam Schlesinger was involved with the music for That Thing You Do, I just knew I would like it.
