I got to see FOW in 2012, on what may have been their last tour. They were fantastic! They did an impromptu meet and great for the few of us who hung around afterwards. The guys were charming. Jody spoke of his love of sailing. I teased Adam about whether they intended "I-95" to be " the most Beatlesque song ever", and he never gave me a direct answer, but did comment how much he thinks of Paul McCartney in his own bass playing. I got the set list from that show, and the guys all signed it. I REALLY miss FOW! In my professional life, I knew the one of the stars of "Crazy Ex Girlfriend". The show was into it's last season when I found out about it. I started binge-watching it on Netflix to see the person I had known, and when I saw Adam's name in the credits, I knew it would be great! The best show, that no one ever saw, too bad. Adam's death really affected me, much like John Lennon's death did in 1980. So sad to lose such a great talent. Thanks FOW for taking that time for your fans after the Buffalo show in 2012. It meant a lot then, and even more now!
FOW came to St. Louis right after Welcome Interstate Managers came out. They played at the air show. It was my kids' first concert. We sat on hay bales in the front row. We got there early and we got to meet and talk to Chris and Adam. They were incredible. They are one of my top 3 favorite bands. Losing Adam was heartbreaking. He was such an incredibly talented guy. It's still hard to believe there won't be anymore new FOW music. I feel very fortunate to have seen them.
I don’t know where I was for so long, cuz I only discovered FOW a couple years ago. Now they’re one of my favorite bands. Sure wish I could’ve seen them play live. Truly one of the great underrated bands of all time. RIP Adam. Thanks for the music.
The first song attracted me to FOW is Sink to the bottom! Such amazing song! already pass 20 years since then and im 40+ now... i fit rite with the crowd there ...i forgotten im getting old
Wow - that is quite a line-up - Squeeze and Fountains of Wayne! Great great great and I still feel that FOW never did get the recognition they deserved. A lot of very well crafted melodies, played well and set to lyrics that usually are interesting, intelligent, moving and sometimes quite hilarious!
This was an incredible performance by FOW which basically made me fall in love with their music after seeing this show on PBS, having had little exposure to them previously. RIP Adam.
So authentic, great song-writing, live as good or better than studio, no autotune. What more could you want? Sorry I never saw these guys... always putting stuff off thinking there is tomorrow.....
Such an amazing, dynamic, clever and talented group of individuals and probably the last truly great rock and roll band. Finding out Adam Schlesinger passed away cut straight through my heart, I was stunned speechless, what a tremendous loss. He was such a multi-talented musician and songwriter, every project he was involved in was better for him being there.
Being from the UK I had never heard of FOW until by chance working in West Africa I took to an American to a bar I knew, I had The Strokes on and first thing he said was " if you like these you should give the Fountains of Wayne a listen " I did next day and loved them since, not a duff song on any of their albums, my fave band.
@@paullad3919 Same here the Beatles will always be my favourite band, but for amount of times I have played full albums by boh of the FOW come out on top. But I shouldn't be comparing them both brilliant in my eyes. Merry Christmas ❤
I was lucky enough to see them live twice. First time was at The Norva in Norfolk, Virginia. The second time was a tiny little venue called the Sellersville Theater in Sellersville, Pennsylvania that Chris had a personal connection with because he grew up there. I brought my sealed vinyl copies of the Self-Titled and Utopia Parkway with me. The daughter of the Sellersville Theater's owner took the albums from me into the back and brought them back out a half our later signed by all four members. They are prized possessions, framed and hung on the wall in our music room, in our home. RIP Adam!
@@davidr1620 That’s right! It was a parking lot next to a bar, not exactly in the heart of downtown if I remember correctly. That’s cool you were there! Earlier that day I went to a brew fest and met Kid Rock, no joke!
@@SilverGrizzly that’s cool man! I remember the opening bands. The first one was sort of like classic rock, or sort of superdrag. And the next band I think was called the Features. So bizarre that you remember that specific show like I do. It was a dream come true for me. FoW didn’t come to San Diego much. The weird thing is it doesn’t feel like a distant memory to me. I called my buddies during Hackensack and they were so jealous. They still tell me to this day that they are jealous I got to see them and they didn’t.
My biggest regret in life is that I wasn’t fortunate enough to have seen FOW in concert. When I heard Adam passed away I cried like a baby. Just a horrible loss. Love to FOW and Adam RIP. ❤️❤️❤️🎸❤️❤️❤️
I got to see them twice, once at the Metro in Chicago and once at a street fair. Such a great live band. Adam‘s passing really affected me emotionally as well.
Chris: "We have two kinds of fans -- the one's who only know us from Stacy's Mom and those who know every deep cut we ever did. They both suck." Paraphrasing. :) Best band ever.
Thanks for posting this! It makes me want to round out my FOW collection past the Welcome Interstate, Fountains of Wayne and Out of State Plates to include their 3 other releases!
I was so lucky to have seen FOW many times in concert probably 2000 - 2012, so I got to hear them promoting tunes from each album. These guys were so good live. A great band! I remain truly sad that there is no longer a chance for a "reunion" tour or concert. Rock On, Adam!
great post, lost my no better place dvd a while back, this is pretty damn good a/v quality right here on youtube & fire in the canyon on the setlist! Infinity Hall Norfolk, CT 11/10/12 if anyone needs the details
I never saw them live, unfortunately, and this is my first time seeing this concert footage. BTW, at the end of the 2nd song "I've Got a Flair," at around 8:36, does anyone else notice a melodic similarity to the ending of BOC's "Don't Fear the Reaper" while Chris is singing "It's something I do well..." repeatedly? Maybe it's just me....
No doubt. In fact FoW often incorporated a 70s rock medley inside of “Radiation Vibe” during live performances. Not surprised if they teased a melody here.
Great set but seats on the floor at rock shows should be illegal. Even the people that know the words to the deep tracks don't know what tf to do in that environment. FoW deserved better.
Good eye! I was at the show. Jody was trashed and had some difficulty playing. Because it was being recorded for PBS they had to do several takes of one song because Jody couldn't come close to getting it right. Small club so got to chat with the band in the bar afterwards. Jody was incoherent, but Chris and Adam were charming. Overall great show.
It’s a local gig and these guys (Chris and Adam) went to college with a lot of the audience. It’s just kind of inevitable that there would be people in their late 30s and early 40s. That’s life man.
@@r0bth What? It's very clearly pitch corrected. Chris's main vocals aren't helped out from what i can tell, but there's even times you can hear Adam's backups without him even singing on the mic. Believe what you want to believe, i don't care. Haha. Come join the FOW facebook group if you wanna hear many people discussing this very show and said pitch correction.
I hear you Joe Auto tune the whole pro tools software machine makes everything perfect music these days sucks but I listen to the old stuff and even that's pro tools up.
I was sad to hear about Adam Schlessinger's passing last year at the beginning of the pandemic. I hung out with him when they played here in.Boston. He was a really nice guy and he had been nominated for an Oscar for doing the soundtrack to the Tom Hanks film "That Thing You Do". Oddly enough, the reason I went to the show was because Sloan were opening for them so I went for them. I stuck around for Fountains Of Wayne and they were great.
That sounds like it would've been a fine concert, Sloan opening for Fountains of Wayne. Being a Canadian and a fan of rock and roll bands with great songs it would have been great! I've seen Sloan live at Massey Hall and a a record store release for their Double Cross album at the old Sonic Boom record store. Sweet. Hey Ken, you should check this out - Adam Schlesinger a musical celebration concert by Jody Porter Unearthed. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8wvF9ZZAN1c.html
@@jonlenzer2021 I mean I love them, I always have since I was a weeeeee boiiii back in the days of, "Radiation Vibe" and, "Sink to the Bottom". There are other perfect songs out there but this one at the right time is absolutely one.
Yes definitely Teenage Fanclub, they're the Scottish Fountains of Wayne, or FOW are the American Teenage Fanclub more accurately. Grand Prix and Songs from Northern Britain are a good place to start. Then obviously from Teenage Fanclub to Big Star.
Sick and tired of the rock musicians dying all the time. It’s never the talentless piles of shit you get in the chart that pass away. Not saying anyone deserves to die it’s just never the talentless ones.
I never got a chance to experience the band live, but the people sitting seems so incongruous with what's being played... I'm sure it was a venue thing but such a shame.
It was. I was there. Not being able to stand and dance was brutal. It's hard to see from the video but a lot of the audience, myself included, were "chair dancing" hard. Impossible not to move to that music. The energy was fantastic!
Never really cared much for this band! They sounded too much like nerdy high school cheap 50 and 60's rock and roll... lol but I do like Stacy's mom song and that's it! :( I think they got together a little late in life as far as music era is concerned!:(
