Cold Porcelain is an air dry material used for sculpting. It is not actual porcelain, which must be fired at high temperatures in a kiln. Cold Porcelain received it's name due to it's ability to cure at room temperature and its translucent, white coloration.
For those of you interested in making your own cold porcelain I've put together a comparison of four different recipes found online. Each recipe is numbered for easy identification through out the video. They are as follows:
Recipe 1:
1 c. Corn Starch (corn flour)
1 c. Wood Glue (Carpenter's Glue)
1 T. Lemon Juice
1 T. Cold Cream (Nivea)
Recipe 2:
1 c. Corn Starch (Corn Flour)
1 c. White Glue (School Glue/Elmers White Glue)
1 T. Lemon Juice
1 T. Cold Cream (Nivea)
Recipe 3:
1 c. Corn Starch (Corn Flour)
1 c. White Glue (School Glue/Elmer's White Glue)
1 T. Lemon Juice
1 T. Eucerine Lotion (Glycerin is much preferred)
Recipe 4:
1 c. Corn Starch (Corn Flour)
1 c. White Glue (School Glue/Elmer's Glue)
1 T. Lemon Juice
1-3 T. generic hand lotion
I mixed all ingredients until well blended, then microwaved for 3 intervals of 20-25 seconds. Then for 1-3 more intervals of 12-15 seconds. Cooking is complete when stirring easily pulls the cold porcelain away from the sides of your container without leaving clumps stuck to the sides.
Allow the porcelain to cool just enough that you can handle it, then knead briefly, dusting your hands & work surface with corn starch if necessary to keep it from sticking.
Place in an air tight container, or wrap with cellophane (saran wrap) and place in a zip seal bag, to rest for 24 hours. Use as you would any air dry clay.

Washable glue doesn't work has to be a PVA white Glue so the regular Elmers glue works.
@joycebrandon
@joycebrandon 6 лет назад
Rachel Rocha, yes, I did use regular PVA glue. You can view ingredient lists in the details just below the video. Edit to add: I see what you are referring to now! Thank you so much - No one has ever mentioned a distinction & I never noticed. Thank you again. This is likely a very important difference!

Rachel Rocha .....are you saying that we can use regular Elmer’s glue? Or dies it have to say PVA on the bottle ? I have several bottles of Elmer’s glue, but non of them say PVA on them. I’m confused I guess.

@@grannyofmany6777 What we're saying is *SCHOOL GLUE* is formulated to wash away - it's not permanent. She kept showing a bottle of it. You want regular white glue, any brand, which is plain PolyVinyl Adhesive or PVA.

Yeah as someone who has recently failed at this many times. Elmers school glue does not work at all. You can use Elmers glue all and that’s fine.

Nivea and Eucerin are just expensive versions of water, mineral oil, and Vaseline (petrolatum) whipped together to make a creamy texture. They both have different micro additives, but what you're looking for in recipes like this is the oiliness factor to moisten without water. If you really want to use cold cream, the next time you're at the drugstore or drug department of a box store, ask the pharmacist for a less expensive skin cream and listen to his/her explanation of what it is. They have a cheap version they use to make special creams and lotions that doctors ask for.

All of these recipes include the same amounts of corn starch, glue, lemon juice, with the only variation being different lotions, but lotion doesn't affect the end result all that much. The wood glue vs Elmers was done wrong, since "wood glue max" has additives in it that ruined the final result, so its result doesn't really count. You need the white, regular wood glue. I was hoping to see more variations like baby oils vs mineral oils, and lemon juice vs vinegar to see how those combinations affected the outcome.

A good recipe that needs a little bit of cooking is 1/2 white glue, 1/2 cornstarch, 2 tsp baby oil, 2 tsps of lemon juice for preserving it longer but since its a liquid and it shrinks because of evaporation of liquids and you dont need it preserved for long than i recommend not using it to have the least amount of shrinkage

I used a little less than a cup of glue, to a cup of corn starch, a couple tablespoons of glycerin a couple tablespoons of baby oil and a tablespoon of white vinegar… as I knead it, I keep my hands coated in lotion and use a little corn starch as I knead it… it starts out sticky but the longer you knead it the less sticky it becomes… before I put it in a bag to keep, I coat it with lotion…. I love this stuff…

Just wondering, have you ever done an experiment on none cooked recipes? And if so how diffrent did they turn out ? From the cooked ones ? Sorry but am new to this, Have just maid a recipes of cornstarch, pva glue, and essential oil, none cooked, Ime going to see how this will except colour, and how translucent it will become, or if it drys well or cracks ect, if its a failure, I will cook it and see, if that makes a difference 😬 if that fails , I will stick to the original recipe of Cornstarch, pva glue, mineral oil and white viniger cooked,!! Only using cold cream for my hands!! If your wondering abought the essential oil ,well I wanted my flowers I plan on making, to smell like flowers!! Lol Absolutely loved this tutorial, thank you 🕊💕🙏

I use cold porcelain to make life-like clay flowers for sale/gifts. My recipe uses Aleene's Tacky Glue (original), mineral oil, cornstarch and white vinegar. The vinegar is used to prevent molding of the moist clay. The mineral oil gives somewhat longer a working time. It does shrink in creation of the flowers, but does not crack and split at all, though I do not make thick items often...yet, the lotus buds and lily buds I've made have not cracked, and they are about the size of your item, though they are only on floral wire, so nothing large beneath them. Cold porcelain may be done in layers also...it helps control the amount of shrinkage by building it up as you go. Blessings!

Thank you so much for doing this test! I have watched at least 50 DIY Clay/porcelain tutorials and it has become daunting to say the least. I've used air dry clay by Crayola and can't afford polymers, and I'm just not getting the results with the Crayola air dry. A lot of cracking. I have some leftover and am wondering if I added glycerine or wood glue to it if it would give better results? Anyway, I will definitely try a batch of #1 for my fairy houses. Thanks again!

Glad to have found your video, would love to see another comparison video if you try other recipes, particularly a no cook method vs heated would be great. Thought it might be handy to mention applying lotion or baby oil to your hands, kneading work surface, and/or cling wrap will help with sticking. You can also dust cornstarch, like when baking, for the same purpose also. A side note to something I saw in the comments, you can swap out corn starch with potato starch.

Keep in mind, school glues have a much higher water content then wood glue so you will get less shrinkage. You also get a stronger clay with the wood glue. Nivea also has less water then hand or body lotions. Anything with a high water content is going to have a higher chance of cracking.

Very useful thanks. I just want to know how did that Sculpey clay you showed at the beginning seems so durable? Whenever I use Sculpey it snaps easily. Like I wouldn't even try to hammer what I made on the table like that.
@joycebrandon
@joycebrandon 6 лет назад
Sorry it's taken me so long to reply! I used Original Sculpey oven-bake clay, white, sold in a 1 pound package. I cook it at 275 degrees Fahrenheit. For these small pieces I only give it about 15 minutes. I wouldn't rap it on the table like that if the piece had any long, thin parts. But for compact pieces I wouldn't expect it to break. I don't know if different versions of sculpey (like Super Sculpey, or colored/metallic) might be a little more brittle. Also, if you have problems with breakage at connection points, like where you've attached limbs to a body piece, you might try using Kato Liquid Polyclay (clear). It works as an adhesive to strengthen the bond between pieces. I have a 60mL (about 2oz) bottle, manufactured by a company called Van Aken, and it's lasted a long time. I think I found it at a hobby store, but Amazon carries it as well. The same size bottle is currently listed at $8.97 I hope that helps. Thank you for watching and commenting!

Vegetable glycerin is readily available online. It's quite economical and works extremely well. 2 tablespoons will solve any problems with cracking clay. Lotion has too many other ingredients that could affect the necessary chemical reaction. Many inexpensive white colored bars of soap (brand name synonymous with "peace bird") are also full of glycerin. Chop the bar into tiny pieces and soak it in warm water for 10 minutes, then reduce it on medium heat until it starts to thicken. Add your other ingredients and don't worry about the water as it will evaporate. It's a good idea to coat the inside of the plastic bag/wrap with mineral oil (baby oil) or petroleum jelly before using it to store the clay. Do the same with your hands before working with or handling the clay.

Hi! Thank you for uploading such an informative video!! Have you ever tried making any of the cold porcelain recipes that does not require cooking? Also, I've seen some recipes that uses vinegar instead of lemon/lime juice, does this prevent the CP from molding? I've seen some recipes that uses baby oil instead of lotion, do you think this would help it from cracking as much? I'm new to clay, I started out with polymer clay, but (1) it can be rather pricey and (2) I am having a lot of issues with lint in polymer clay. I use alcohol to clean it, but it's really frustrating to bake something and then have to try and buff out the piece of lint/dirt you missed, lol. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! ^____^

+chococuppincake Thank you, I'm glad you found it helpful! --I have not tried any of the no-cook cold porcelain recipes yet, but I would like to do another experiment/comparison with some of those. --The vinegar should work just as well as the lemon juice to prevent mold growth, but even so, the cold porcelain doesn't have a terribly long shelf-life. If you don't plan to use a batch up within a few weeks, you'll want to store place it in your refrigerator in an air tight container. It still wont last forever, but it will buy you some additional time. --I haven't tried using baby oil as the sole emollient in a recipe, but I'd be interested in seeing if it makes a difference in the cracking. --Lint is so frustrating! I've been making my own wigs for my art dolls, and I use a lot of wool felt & faux fur in my other pieces, so little bits of fiber and lint are impossible to completely avoid. But I find that after sanding and painting a piece they are absolutely unnoticeable. I also wipe down my work area and wash my hands very frequently during a sculpting session. Having some baby-wipes close at hand can also help, as you can give your work surface a quick swipe even as you're working. Thank you again for watching & for your great questions!

+Joyce Brandon You're welcome! And thank you so much for replying back so quickly! ^___^ - I didn't know about that, thank you for letting me know to put it in the fridge! I did read to never store it in a dark spot away from sunlight, apparently it molds quicker that way too! >~< - I read a comment on another video that adding less of water-based ingredients, the less it will shrink and crack. Not sure how truthful it is, but I've been searching the internet trying to find a recipe that won't shrink a lot and won't crack after drying.. :/ That's why I was super happy to come across your video that shows 4 different recipes! :D - For cold porcelain, if there is a speck of lint in it, does using rubbing alcohol help clean it up or would I need to use something else? - I am trying to make polymer clay charms (and trying to get better at it!), so I don't really paint them except to paint varnish on them. :\ I do use a lot of baby wipes as well! I will have to just maybe use them more often! :) -That would be awesome if you did another comparison! I will look forward to it!! Thanks again! ^____~

@joycebrandon
@joycebrandon 7 лет назад
I have not. It was pretty crumbly, so I think it would be difficult to get fine details into it. When you say it smelled horrible, do you mean the smell of the components was bad or that the porcelain itself developed a bad smell?
@roypeak3603
@roypeak3603 7 лет назад
Joyce Brandon Yeah, from what you showed of it, it doesn't look practical for that purpose, but your tests showed a very smooth result so I wasn't sure. As for the smell, it smells like like I cooked a bunch of white glue, which I did. I do have a sensitive sense of smell, so that might be the reason why the smell is so unpleasant.

I see. Yes, PVA glue is a vinyl polymer, so that may have been the source. I didn't notice too much of a smell, but I didn't use a pot on the stove, just short bursts in the microwave. I wonder if that made a difference.

I dont know why your dried pieces have all cracks O.O how do you cooks yours? i also have tutorials and tips in my channel..if you watch it hope it helps you??. maybe because you didn't use any oil.. baby oil or cooking oil..its a must recipe :) lotion is just for your hands while kneading it after you cooked it..

Hi Clay Bum!! I watched your tutorial today, your clay looks very nice and smooth. I am going to try it tomorrow. Do you use a tablespoon or teaspoon of oil and vinegar? I don't want to add too much or too little. Also, does the clay have to cure for 24 hours after cooking? Please let me know. Your work is so cute and inspiring, really love it! Thank you!!

hi thanks :) yes 1 tablespoon of oil and vinegar for 1 cup of glue and cornstarch. doesnt need to be exact 24 hours to rest. 6-12hrs will do :) hope you try it. cold porcelain clay is really nice to work with. keep in touch! ;)

Thank you so much for replying. I made the clay today. It came out very good. It was tougher (than what I thought) mixing it after microwaving it several times but I am very happy with the results. Your recipe is the second one I've tried and I am sticking with it. I let it sit for about 8 hours and I've already made a couple of things with it. I am new at this so my sculpting is not very good but hopefully I get better with practice. Keep up the good work. Thank you very muchhhh!!!!!!

I think the second recipe may have been overcooked? I've used the exact same recipe five times in a row and have only managed to get one right. I think the measurement of "cups" could be the problem. There are lots of different sized cups and mugs in my house and I don't know which sized cup it's talking about so I just wing that part. I think the 4 times my recipe came out wrong (it wasn't very smooth and I didn't get the teardrop smooth pull apart) it was due to overcooking. It looked very similar to your second attempt and everything I tried to make out of it was very prone to cracking.

What is the purpose of the lemon juice? No one else uses that.

Correct, it is supposed to create a more acidic environment to discourage mold.

can you swap the corn starch to flower
@joycebrandon
@joycebrandon 7 лет назад
From what I understand, it must be cornstarch (also sometimes called cornflour), it can't be wheat flour/all purpose flour. Cornstarch has a distinctly finer consistency, creating the smooth texture desired in cold porcelain. It requires a shorter cooking time to thicken and it maintains more translucence as it dries. There may also be differences in the shelf life of your porcelain, as wheat flour/all purpose flour goes rancid faster.

Also, wheat contains gluten whereas corn does not.

CORN STARCH IS A VERY OLD WAY OF WHEN YOU WASHED CLOTHS THE MOTHER WOULD MAKE UP A POT OF STARCH AND THAT IS WHAT SHE STARCHED HER PILLOW CASES AND WHITE SHIRTS ALL THE THINGS THAT THEY HAD TO STARC H ALL THE THINGS WHEN THEY TOOK THEM OFF THE LINE OUT SIDE THEY HAD TO BE SPRINKLED DOWN WITH WATER SO THEY COULD IRON ALL THE CLOTHS . THEY WOULD ROLL THEM UP PUT IN A BASKET TO SOFTEN AND WAIT AWHILE BEFORE THEY COULD IRON . BACK LONG TIME AGO IT WAS HARD TO WASH CLOTHS THE WAY THEY DO TO DAY . MY MOTHER ALWAYS USED ARGO STARCH WHICH IS THE SAME THING . JUST DIFFERENT NAME . I HOPE THIS HELPED YOU A LITTLE IF NOT SEND ME A MESSAGE .

This is a very interesting bit of history which would otherwise be lost to modern methods.

So y the Nivea?
@joycebrandon
@joycebrandon 6 лет назад
FREY JARAH, Good question. It's because the recipes I used called for cold cream & that's what it is.
@kellyebrown3758
@kellyebrown3758 4 года назад
It conditions the clay without adding extra water. It doesn't have to be Nivea. Any cold cream will work.

if it too sticky, add some more corn starch, and if it to dry, add some more water and lotion in it!!!!

I don't add cold cream to recipe. Mine asks for baby oil, or glycerin. The lotion or cold cream is for kneading, and inside of bag when storing. My favorite recipe is a no cook recipe. I'll try and find it.

you should have used baby oil instead of the lotion

The only downside to that is the cold cream has stearic acid - which is called for in one of the more complex - but well-reviewed recipes. so, you'd have to add it.
@deadgirl4871
@deadgirl4871 7 лет назад
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stearic_acid stearic acid is a fatty acid , if this is a concern use olive oil or vegetable oil. and the cold cream has a lot of extra stuff in it witch can cause things you make to crack easily

There's another that only takes the glue and the corn starch and craft paint to color. Doesnt require baking or anything but kneading it.. and oiling your mold if your using a mold.
