As many employees return to in-person work, some are also pushing for fewer hours, saying they want a four-day workweek. Dozens of U.S. companies are already trying a shortened week, hoping to reduce stress without reducing productivity. CBS News' Kris Van Cleave reports.

4 day weeks are awesome… it’s easier to do chores, gig work, trainings, extra certifications, more valuable work to be balanced in the week, and room for family

This is long overdue, I work the same hours as my Great Grandparents and I can't afford to buy a house like they did. The American dream has gone wrong! Technology has improved productivity so, why are we working the same hours they used to jump-start the economy after the great depression? Work life balance has been out of whack for far too long. A two day weekend leaves one day for catching up on sleep and laundry and one day is for running errands around town, there's no time for hobbies and relaxing, which is why the working class have been SNAPPING and shooting up the show. If you're going to make me rent the American dream instead of owning it, at least give me a three day weekend.

Work to live vs live to work has never been that difficult a concept to grasp. Tech should have helped realize it sooner, but it didn’t because greed usually wins. A four day work week is a no brainer for most businesses/schools. Less overhead, smaller carbon footprint, equal or better productivity, higher retention, happier work force, stronger families, physically & psychologically healthier people…

personally did a 4 day work week and my Life CHANGED! I worked M-W, F. I was off Thursday’s and the weekends. That Thursday really help me regain and prevented me from having a bummed out tired and lazy attitude by Friday. Instead my productivity at work improved on Friday and I noticed a difference from my other work mates. I was energized, refreshed and they were sluggish, and lack productivity. Matter of fact it changed my life so much I reduced my work week to 2 DAYS A WEEK. That was to much time for me so now I’m at a 3 day work week and 4 days weekend ! Definitely go for it but don’t forget to pay that debt down and stop caring why people think 😉

Many Companies will not change from 5 days / 8 hrs a day to 4 days / 8 hrs a day. They may consider 4 days / 10 hrs a day ( this option is a better chance to become reality ).

If the 4 day work week day off was flexible for any day of the week not just Friday, that would be better. Priortizing health,mental health, and family has to be weaved into a comapnies bottom line in order to make them attractive to potencial employees.

Maybe there is an option for people who can work at home flexible hours as long as certain amount of work must be done. Many people with children would love this.

I work 4 days 48 hours in the health industry and I love it!!!!! Extra pay because it’s Friday Saturday Sunday Monday and nobody wants to work weekends. I would rather work weekends and off on days everyone else is working. Thank You GOD!!!!! To be a worker amongst workers is truly a gift of service especially answering my calling for the highest good 😊

I've been working part-time for years now (24 hr week alternating with a 36 hr week). The job was mentally exhausting. I'd rather have the free time than the extra money.

Before Henry Ford (HF) started the 5 day work week, Americans worked 6 days and went to church on Sunday. HF realized that if he was going to be rich selling cars, there needed to be a consumer class that had the money and the time to buy his cars. So, give them Saturdays off. They now can buy his cars on Saturdays. But, he also paid them enough money and sold his cars at a price that his employees could afford while Ford still made a profit. As Jaron Lanier said, "That's capitalism 101 and Ayn Rand just doesn't get that." The 4 day work week is just a natural progression.

@@steveanderson1058 Firefighters live at the firehouse for three to four days, then go home. Cops work twelve hour shifts for three or four days, then go home. It's not necessarily about how long or short the work week is. It's about what works and what doesn't work. Or, what specific policies generate specific results and do we want those results? And it also depends on the type of job. We can't know if some things are silly or not, or if they work or not, until we try them.

I support 4 day work week. There is a need to balance because if not the salaries and bonuses are at cost of family life, mental and physical health and kid’s upbringing too suffers if parents do not have enough time to attend to them. Having said that there are many critical issues that needs civilians to commit sometime every week to address them because government isn’t doing enough or in many cases is hurting the community welfare. Civilians need to participate and co-ordinate with city/community for example or as an individual on climate/green initiatives (top priority)but there are many avenues that have deteriorated while people were putting crazy work hours. In my opinion- 3 day work week, 1 day community work, 3 day family care is ideal balance.

Okay so this is actually really nice I have done it before, what's not nice is the fact that usually... they are going to do you dirty with mandatory overtime maybe that's a givin' but just throwing that out there, bonuses is the paycheck is nice, and it will help you save I guess because the only thing you'll be able to think of is sleep

This! For too long people have worked long hours. Sacrificing family and human connection to boost executive compensation. Profits became the center of the world. No time for passing on priceless wisdom and examples of good humanity to the next generations and so we have lost more valuables in moments than we have gained in material stuffs.

4 days, same amount of money. Aint gonna happen in my setting. Most people argue with "why would I pay you this amount if you only work x amount of hours". No matter how good the service is. When people work minute over, employees want to charge overtime. 🤔 I think this less work same pay will work for union/salary people.

5 days / 8 hours = 40 hour work week. (2 days off. 1 day of rest + 1 day of doing house chores + errands) 4 days / 10 hours = 40 hour work week. (You get 3 days off) 3 days / 12 hours = 36 hour work week. (However, you get 4 hour OT to make up but at least you get 4 days off). 2 days / 12 hours = 24 hour work week. (5 days off, however you get 16 hour OT to make up. 8 extra hours each so that means 2 days 20 hours) Is this possible? Is this legal? Should you accept 2 days / 20 hours? Which is better? If you are a valuable worker and want to work less days per week, but you have to work more hours per work day to reach that 40 hour work week but at least you get more days off FOR THE SAME PAY...

In the fed. gov't you can work 9 hr days and take every other Friday (or other day of your choice) off. You can alternatively work 4 10 hour days and take one day of your choice off every week. It's called a compressed work schedule.

I’ll be fair, I’ll work the same amount of hours, that I’m supposed to work in a week, in four days, for the same pay. There is no way I could do the workload in less hours. Three days off would allow me to do a lot more.

@@kenbob1071 The problem with tech is that it is a 24/7 world competition. The same engineers need to work on the same projects(coders). Missing 1 day of work means that you are 20% behind your project or you competition. Total disaster for the company. I work in tech for decades and this is how it always been. Sometimes I work 6-7 days a week just to make sure things are done in time and right.

I work 2, 24 hour shifts every week…and I’ve been doing it for years. I was able to keep my daughters out of day care and the failing public school system, simply because of that schedule. I went to that schedule because I’m a lazy person that is driven.
