Something about the twins man, they were so majestic and massive in size, there might have been buildings taller, but very few had that awe about them, when you looked straight up from the ground, takes your breath away and i can only imagine what it was like, up on top of the observation deck, in the open air, amazing!
@@GregoryAlanBaileygamereviews I always gave them an extra glance in the Sopranos intro, there's something architecturally intriguing about them. Perhaps it's just the fact that they're gone that contributes to the matter.
I couldn’t help but stare at the original WTC at the end of the video. Despite its simplicity in design, there is something about them that forces one’s attention. Maybe because there were two of them, and they went straight up with no tapering, so their sheer size was more pronounced. I was 7 when they fell, and I remember staring at them as a little kid when I was driven across the BQE. They glistened in the sun as well, depending on the time of day. Early mornings, they’d have this beautiful golden glow to them, midday a solid gray, and the evenings a golden glow again. I miss them, and the NYC skyline will never be whole without them. RIP to all those lost on that horrible day, and to those that died years later from 9/11 related health issues.
Personally I’d say they were more Silverish White At Mid Day but Grey on a Cloudy day As they were Cladded in Aluminum which basically made them Chrome at the base !! So yeah they were Perfect for Reflecting Light And Subtly The Surroundings Up Close Especially Each other ✊
Empire State Building is the best of the bunch. Built all the way back in 1931… the world had never seen anything like it. An absolute masterpiece of a design and if held onto the title for a ridiculous amount of time.
I agree. It's incomparable for many reasons, from the innovative construction techniques (for its time) that allowed it to be completed in 13 months (which is still remarkable today), to the daring attempt to become a port for airships. But especially because it remains the living memory of a time when betting on everything wasn't crazy.
Chrysler Building Gets Overshadowed Though and THAT was First 😢! Kinda like the John Hancock to the Sears - They are Similar in Design and Character like Siblings or cousins ?! But Chrysler is Even More Fancy with Roaring 20s Art Deco Plus Eagles Statues On Each Corner ❕❗️
@APerson-ni1gb I AGREE WITH YOU, THIS VIDEO TREATS THE CHRYSLER BUILDING LIKE A STEP CHILD. AND TO ME ,THE FREEDOM TOWER IS NOT THE TALLEST BUILDING IN NEW YORK, OR THE COUNTRY. I GO BY THE PARAPET , OR ROOF HEIGHT ,AND THAT WOULD MAKE THE TALLEST BUILDING IN NEW YORK, AND THE COUNTRY, THE CENTRAL PARK TOWER (AKA), THE NORDSTRUM BUILDING 1,550 FEET AND SECOND WOULD BE, THE STIENWAY, TOWER, ALSO THE SLIMMEST 1,428 FEET, THIRD IS 432 PARK AVENUE, 1,396 FEET, AND FOURTH IS THE BANDERBILT BUILDING, 1,401 FEET. I WAS DISAPPOINTED WITH THE FREEDOM TOWER. I WANTED IT TO BE 1776 FEET AT THE ROOF, BUT TO ME ,THEY PULLED A FAST ONE. IT'S REALLY NOT TALLER THAN THE TWIN TOWERS, 1,368 FEET, IT JUST HAS A 408 FOOT ANTENNA ON TOP. THE NEXT SKYSCRAPER BEING BUILT IN NEW YORK IS, THE AFFIRMATION TOWER, ON 11TH AVENUE. IT WILL BE 1,663 FEET TALL, THATS IF THEY DON'T CHANGE IT, LIKE THEY DID WITH THE FREEDOM TOWER.
If you haven't seen the Twin Towers in person you won't understand how much more they were than just giant buildings. Their diagonally off set position just elevated their dominance to another magnitude.
I do, they were and still are to this day my favorite skyscrapers that I didn't create. And as beautiful as the one world trade center is, it doesn't beat the Twin Towers.
The Empire State Building is my favorite. The art deco architecture makes it look so fancy and intricate. It is beautiful. Plus the idea that they were able to do that in the 1930’s is super impressive.
That's true. And I think it makes sense that the ESB is a favorite of so many people; because beyond the intrinsic beauty of art deco, it was also a daring project and, due to its immense size, as you rightly point out, ahead of its time.
Even though the twin towers seem simple at first in terms of design they are my absolute favourite and i really miss looking at them. They were by far the most imposing buildings. We have buildings almost double the height today but none of them are as awe inspiring. They were just massive and even though they were basically just 2 giant cuboids they were beautifully designed. Gosh i miss them..
Don't be bewitched, those new "super" skyscrapers are not as tall as they say they are.. It's funny how we have a city with hundreds of 50+ skyscrapers in it, and then Dubai desperately builds a random 163 floor spire in the middle of a desert, and China makes sure they have 3 landmark towers in the heart of poverty Shanghai. American cities all look successful, everything in those countries looks like its built on lies and hoarded wealth.
@@WitchKing-Of-AngmarAs an unapologetic American I gotta disagree about the Burj Khalifia that thing is an absolute monument to mankind. You are also spewing the wrong narrative on the Burj Khalifia as the real story should be that it was the same American architect firm that built the Sears Tower who also designed the Burj Khalifia so they might as well put an American flag at the top of that as well. Also some of the cities in China look straight outta cyberpunk and I wish US would incorporate more of their flair for neon lighting.
@@Byronic19134 No and never, America barely prioritizes that kind of modern and I wish all the asian, Indian, and "future is now" american would realize this. We were a city built in 1624, this is not some random desert scape for the rich to play in, we have actual history we didn't destroy for new wealth like that disgusting place + the modern slavery of nepal fathers. Qatar and Dubai will never know what a city looks like with big autumn trees, a 1750 built state house sorrounded by an open lawn and large magnolias/sycamores, an art deco skyscraper with beautiful interior and wealth unknown to them, competent designs that don't use flowers to try to humanize their glass sticks. Manhattan is a dream compared to the blah that is Dubai and the Burj Khalifa is half spire. With every shot of it I don't see the worlds tallest building. How come NYC has the shortest skyscrapers compared to China and Emirates (Manhattan has huge impressive buildings, but not to the height)? It doesn't even add up, I swear they are lying about the heights of their buildings.
It's hard to imagine that at the beginning the World Trade Center Towers were absolutely despised by everyone, they considered them an eyesore, and were even compared to the 'boxes' the Empire State and Chrysler Building came in. Nowadays, people can't help but cherish the good old days when they towered over Manhattan. I guess you don't really miss something until you lose it.
Well Thankfully many Already Despise the Freedom Tower Because it sucks as a Tribute and looks Nothing like what the city claims Its Paying Homage to !
The Empire State Building, historic and iconic. One World Trade Center, a symbol of resilience and hope. The Twin Towers, ill-fated, yet majestic in their grandeur. But I can't stop thinking about the Sears Tower. One of my favorites. A beautiful, imposing building. Broad shouldered, like it's city's citizens. Unique in it's structural design and color scheme compared to most skyscrapers. And when complimented with the Hancock building, they seem to (almost) bookend the Chicago skyline, especially given their similar design and colors. Each of these buildings is awesome in their own right, but the Sears holds a special place for me. Love it so much.
While the twin towers were rather simplistic in shape, it was elegant and proof you don't need smaller top floors to hold a structure that size. Uncompromising functional floor space bottom to top. Would have preferred if the new tower had floors up to 1776 feet. The antenna itself can only be climbed by certified technicians, nobody is going to fully appreciate the height from an observation deck or something.
The impressive and awe inspiring thing about the Twin Towers was not only their height, but their width. Other buildings like the Sears (Willis) Tower were slightly taller, but did not look nearly as imposing. The Twins were MASSIVE! Standing at the bottom of them and looking up was a sight to behold, especially as a child. It was actually the first time I got scared looking UP at something! The NYC skyline (and NYC itself) has never been the same since they've been gone. It was stupid not to rebuild them.
They'd never be able to rebuild them exactly, for a start they would have to install more than 3 emergency stairwells, and make them wider so that emergency workers could pass on the way up. The stairwells alone contributed to a lot of the deaths on 9/11.
@@bretton_woodsThat would make them even Wider then and Taller thus Even Bigger and more Imposing ? That’s a Good thing imo Like I’m no engineer Nor Architect but why not have 4 Additional stairwells and Lifts on Each Corner ? Yes it might take away some floor space but for the Better !?
Very cool! I love seeing this. The Sears Tower is our home town sentinel and has a different personality depending in which side of the city you're viewing it from and I love that about it. It seems more like a living behemoth.. When I saw the WTC towers in person, a totally different and massive feel because of the solid shape from top to bottom. Very cool but more of a structure vibe than a fantastical presence ...both equally enjoyed for what they inpart(ed). The Empire State is always treasured for its historical significance and presence for so many years prior to the later buildings that would surpass its height. Truly iconic.
It made me sad that any praise for the Sears Tower is so low in the comments :( It's the skyscraper that ignited my love for architecture and engineering
@@akaviral5476 The Sears tower is my favourite, its such a unique design ad yet the type of building I always used to sketch as a kid. Also never knew that about the tower @theshadowboxer
Wow...such an amazing use of graphics and illustrations! I think that one of the things that confused people when 9/11 was happening was that people thought it was a small plane that hit WTC1 because of the shear massiveness of the tower. And it's honestly not until you see the WTC's next to the ESB that you really get a true comparison of their scale.
Same, atleast I've been to the Sears, so I will always cherish that, but I always dreamed of seeing the Twins in person, it must be so surreal, especially always seeing them in movies and tv shows, until you see it in person, it's a big big difference!
A day or so after 9/11, I remember seeing on the news a newswoman said, "Well, once again, the Empire State Building is now the tallest building in NYC."
The Twin Towers may have been a bit bland in design, but there was just something majestic about them, like they were a pair of guardians standing over the city. Even though they had a terrible demise, maybe in a way, they still were the guardians of the city by taking the brunt of the terrorist attacks. They could have possibly saved different parts of the city from something more sinister that could have been planned by the terrorists.
Adding onto that, if they hadn't taken the first two hits, the passengers aboard United Airlines Flight 93 would not have known about hijackers, and they wouldn't have been able to subdue them. This is the flight that crashed in Pennsylvania, but it is believed that the target was either the White House or the Capitol building.
they werent really bland, calling entire generations of architecture dull and unremarkable is an insult, you dont have to like modernist design but you state it as it is fact that its bland and not your personal opinon
The Twin Towers gave everyone in the city and beyond a focal point of direction, to help you locate where you were and were you were headed. Sorely missed, even with the new One World Trade.
Out of them all I like the Empire State Building. Its small now but when it was young it was towering over the 1930s New York Skyline. Now its the oldest out of them all at a grand age of 94 years.❤
The Sears Tower is my favorite one! Makes up the marvelous Chicago skyline, I’ve been there myself Oh I called it the Sears Tower? If you don’t know, here’s a very short backstory… I was born and raised in Chicago almost all my life (not important but now I live in California), and every native Chicagoan calls it the Sears Tower, we weren’t happy when they renamed it the Willis Tower
@@Blackdiamondprod. in today's dollars the Empire State Building cost about $600 million to build. One World Trade center cost about $4 billion, and it's fairly ugly.
beauty is subjective and they built skyscrapers in the 70s in nyc that can survive nuclear bombs (33 thomas street) so they actually built them stronger for a short period in the cold war era personally i think the sears tower is just as beautiful
Such an awesome video you made. You should make more of these. Such as comparing all the tallest buildings throughout history side by side. This is probably the best comparison video I’ve ever seen. Good work and look forward to your future videos.
You're very welcome. I'm particularly proud that you say it's the best you've seen, because the truth is that there are some quite good ones, and one is never the most objective in these matters. In any case, I am going to continue making videos of this type because I enjoy it, but I'm going to have to struggle with Kronos to see if it lets me play tricks on reality. Well, and with my wife too, and that's going to be more difficult.
As a Chicago Native I hated when they declared the WTC the tallest building in America when it clearly is not. Same thing with the twin towers in Asia.
And the main reason for this channel's existence is because of our beloved Empire State Building. So we're going to wish it a very happy birthday and many more years to come! 🎉🎈
@@Magnitudx ... Imagine, in just 7 years, The ESB will turn 100 💯 years Old !! I think that's in 2031 It seems like a long time but, time flies and we'll be there before we know it 😊
My favorite out of all of these are the Twin Towers, they both just completed and made the New York skyline. They also complemented the Empire State Building. The new World Trade Center while I like it just seems out of place, not natural like the twin towers did along with the Empire State Building. Now New York is building a bunch of weird looking buildings that are going to ruin the skyline. At least I can say I experienced the best skyline in New York back when.
The Twin Towers in those photos taken with the ESB always look so natural, like as the low rises turn into the massive buildings, it suddenly jumps and then descends again.
the World Trade Center Twins were immaculate specially with their diagonal Offset Footprints looking towards NJ/Lady Liberty they just fit there. But alot of what i fiind is alot of the newer generation love the One WTC because it's the only tower they Know as World Trade Center but ive been blessed to live in the same timeline as both and I have to say the Twin Towers cant be replicated. Tehy were both built the same despite some differences and that there were 2 of them which is why they were attacked in the first place.
2:34 Amazing how a bomber jet carrying bombs crashed into the Empire State and didn’t even dent the thing, while a commercial airliner crashed into even stronger towers in the WTC which were made of the strongest structural steel known to man at the time and managed to cause them to melt into ashes 70 years later.
The Twin Towers… I had the privilege to see them with my own eyes when crossing Manhattan Bridge on the Q Train. I would stare at them and admire their beauty.
My favorite has always been Sears Tower, it would’ve been larger around 5.5-6 million square feet. But since the faa limited it’s height to 1,450 ft, they had to cut down the size of the building. Seriously fuck the faa.
Lol I know right? What a shame, what could have been, especially now with all the buildings that have surpassed it, it used to be the tallest in the world, how times have changed.
Not really imo. Those buildings are both far too massive and imposing to be placed directly next to eachother like that and look pleasing aesthetically. One of the things that made the Twin Towers so beautiful and fitting in the New York skyline was they were the centerpiece. There was no other competing skyscraper near it that came close to its height and all the other buildings in lower Manhatten made up the rest of the skyline and complimented the Twins.
I'd be cool of you did this video again but with 4 other buildings throughtout North America. I'd love to see the CN Tower in Toronto included, I would've looked very unique next to the buildings in this video
I’m so happy my ‘rents took us to NY when I was 13 and I got to go up to the top floor of the wtc towers…. It was amazing to see it was just a giant!! I wish they rebuilt it exactly as they were

View of the old World Trace Center was illusion. Those strips, streching to 417 m height must be so spectacular in real. And of course power was doubled by a neighbour tower.
In the end of the video with the four buildings (five with the south tower), I couldn't stop looking at the WTC. It just fits Manhattan perfectly, like it's supposed to be there forever. You see those other buildings and they don't fit as much as the Twin Towers.
Thank You. Basically, everything is done in Blender, and the final panorama is also made in Blender but with (let's say) another 'technique'. It's similar to a miniature mode or a model mode. That's why it might look different to you.

When I saw that image of the Freedom Tower and the Twin Towers together at the end, it actually seriously spooked me out because of what happened. That image looked so wrong. I was 30 back then and I remember the horror of what happened very clearly. I’m in Australia and we will be visiting NYC next year. I remember those two buildings being superimposed onto the Perth, Western Australia skyline back in the news in 2001, and they were truly immense, especially when placed into that setting…but in the NYC skyline, they looked totally natural and to scale there. The Freedom Tower lacks their presence. Can’t say I’m a big fan of a certain Donald J Trump but I did agree with him when he stated build them as they were, but even better to serve a massive snub to those who sought to bring the United States to its knees. Those two towers are definitely missed I reckon along with the many innocents that paid the price because of a perverse and twisted ideology. I’ll never forget.
They could never be rebuilt exactly, simply because the original design of the twins had several flaws - like only having 3 emergency stairwells, instead of the 6 they were supposed to have for buildings of that height. The same stairwells also being far too narrow, meaning it was hard for emergency workers to pass evacuees on the way up. They'd also need to have changed the structure to have steel supports running throughout the floor layout instead of having all the structural steel on the outside. I do agree that the new tower does not look great...it looks like it could be in *any* city. Totally generic.
I never been to New York so I never saw the Empire State or one world trade but I did get to see the Sears Tower and I can surely tell you as a Floridian it is massive af
*Absolutely amazing!* Thank you for sharing! And for the love of G’d, lets support a movement to rebuild WTC2 just like it was(of course, stronger). The original WTC complex was iconic!
For fun and helpful information (since it came up in a reply to a comment): The Central Park Tower in New York City has a roof height of 1,550 feet. It is taller than the Willis Tower (roof height 1,451) by a significant margin, and is the tallest residential building in the world. The Willis (Sears) Tower is 1,354 feet at its highest floor, where The Central Park Tower is 1,417 feet at its highest floor. Additionally, The New One World Trade Center Tower is, architecturally, also significantly taller than The Willis Tower, (as the creator of the video mentioned) due to its permanent spire according to The Council On Tall Buildings (the organization based in Chicago and the world authority on skyscraper official measurements). The spire on the New One WTC (as mentioned) is officially part of the permanent architectural design of the building and not an antenna. By no measure is The Willis Tower architecturally the tallest in America. Even if you did count the removable antennas on The Willis Tower (which doesn't count but reaches 1,729 feet), it would still not reach the 1,776 foot official (and symbolic) height of the New World Trade Center Tower, and certainly not reach The New World Trade Center's actual pinnacle height of 1,792 feet. Said with great respect and appreciation on your work and great video. 👍
The problem with the WTC's spire is that it has never and will never be completed and is only counted by the council for political reasons. Due to their own guidelines, the spire should only be listed as an antenna due to not being architecturally completed
Architecturally speaking the sears tower isn’t the tallest, but technically speaking it’s the tallest out of the whole bunch in this video when you see the tower side by side ignoring the antennas. i feel like spires shouldn’t be considered with building height
The Central Park Tower might be the tallest ALL-residential building in the world, but as far as the tallest residential building -- I'd tend to say that's Burj Khalifa in Dubai.
Wow really nice video, loved the comparison but is it me or does the the empire state look so small compared to one world trade even though the difference was only 100 feet
It's true that it looks 'small,' and I think it might have to do with the perspective. In any case, it's not 100; it's almost 300 feet of difference both at the roof level and at the level of the antennas or spires.
@@TheMilocars 1250 feet is the maximum height of the Empire State Building's pinnacle without the antenna. Let's say it's the height of the second observatory; the one located in the dome of the pinnacle. However, it should not be confused with the height of the first observatory (the terrace), which is at 1050 feet. The terrace of the One World Trade Center (without the pinnacle) is indeed at a height of 1368 feet, to which you must add another 408 feet for the pinnacle. So, I reaffirm that both in terms of antennas and terraces, the difference is around 300 feet. In any case, the representation in the video is at almost a perfect scale, with just a few inches of margin. Nevertheless, I agree with you that the perception is that there is a greater difference, to the point that I have double-checked the measurements on the models to make sure there are no errors 🙂
Thank you very much! I'm honestly thrilled that you like it because I've seen your work, and you do some really cool things in the nautical theme (I haven't had time to see more yet). And what I also see is that you make incredible use of SketchUp. I really like it.
As Irony would have it.. Sears (Willis)Tower still has the highest occupied roof-top in the Western Hemisphere as One World Trade Center only wins height by its Spire that counts and Sears (Willis) Tower's twin antenna do not as they are not seen as part of the structure.
@@justogarcia175 Yes but them skinny's never were or are the tallest in the world that the Empire State, Original Twin Towers or Sears Tower held.... The Newer One World Trade Center though never tallest in the world.... it has a iconic status and fanfare that those new skinny's NYC put up that unless a resident.... probably never can even get past the lobby ... of course a visitor to a tenant can. ALL THE ONES OF THIS VIDEO HAVE NO RESIDENTIAL COMPONENT EITHER. - The Empire State building was tallest in the world for decades. - The original Twin Towers World Trade Center then held the title for 2-yrs . - Till Sears (Willis) Tower took the title for 24-yrs of tallest in the world. The decision to count the spire on the new One World Trade.... came in 2013 when the 30 members of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat's "height committee" decreed a spire counted and antenna did not. The debate was particularly charged because of the symbolic nature of the metal structure on One World Trade Center. With the structure the building reaches 1,776ft - a reference to the year of the US Declaration of Independence. The committee claimed that that or 9 11 significance played no role in the decision. “Spires, the committee decided, are part of the architecture of the building and not if a roof addition is a antenna, flag pole or sign. Saying a Spire will not only be there permanently but have a significant effect on what the building is perceived to be. ANTENNA that Sears (Willis) Tower had did not and were replaced and made taller over time. Still we cannot imagine Sear Tower Chicago or formally named John Hancock Center Tower Chicago NOT having their distinctive very high Twin Antenna topping them. BUT RULES ARE RULES. - The Burj Khalifa tallest in the World in Dubai has a unoccupied space and spire of 801ft. - The One World Trade Center has a spire that is 441 ft. - The Sears (Willis) Tower twin antenna are 294 ft and the other at 290 ft. In the original design for One World Trade Center, the spire was to have been covered in decorative cladding. (making it look sleek). That cladding was ditched during construction due to issues over its upkeep, however, which had lead, in part, to the contention (as it currently does look like a sort of antenna).... I BELIEVE THE SLEEK DESIGN SHOULD HAVE BEEN KEPT. Without its spire, One World Trade Center measures a mere 1,368ft, shorter than the 1,451ft Willis Tower - formerly the Sears Tower. The top floor of the Sears (Willis) Tower, at 1,354 ft and is higher than the One World Trade Center’s top floor at 1,268 ft.
This is incorrect. The Central Park Tower in New York City has a roof Height of 1,550 feet. It is taller than the 1,451 foot roof height of The Willis Tower by a significant margin, and is the tallest residential building in the world. The Willis (Sears) Tower is 1,354 at its highest floor, where The Central Park Tower is 1,417 at its highest floor.
I know the Spire on 1WTC counts for its height, making it taller than the Sears(Willis) Tower but people can still go up higher on the Sears Tower than on 1WTC. The North Tower had an antenna not a spire and of course, antennas don't count.
Excellent video 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽 I always go by roof height (where one can stand & walk around w/o safety equipment) ! With that in mind, if you stand on the roof of Central Park Tower, you’re looking down upon the Sears Tower’s roof. If you stand on the Sears Tower’s roof, you’re looking down upon the roof of 1 WTC, all by roughly a 100ft or so !
For me, it's also the height of the rooftop (generally accessible) that determines the real height of a building, but CTBUH considers that criterion secondary, and personally, I find that it distorts the worldwide rankings of skyscrapers. And indeed, based on this, what you're saying is true.
@@Magnitudx I always found it silly how a “spire” determines the overall height of a building and then, when all of the tallest buildings are compared, some of the “tallest” buildings have a significantly lower roof height. The B1M RU-vid channel has an episode about this.
When it comes to The Empire State building I consider it the KING of skyscrapers because of the name and because the way it looks Even though it’s the shortest building of the bunch
Twin towers are the best and always will be the best. Beautiful buildings. I wish I had the chance to see them in person before 9/11 but this view of all the buildings in lower manhattan looks really cool. They need bigger buildings in lower manhattan..
I have a question since these buildings are all to scale. The larger side of the Empire State Building which is the North/South side. I’m curious as to the section of the building from floors 30-71 facing the North/South side is wider than the Original 1 World Trade Center width? Just curious as it’s hard to compare the 2 buildings using the North/South side of the Empire State Building.
I could measure it accurately if you're very interested, but from memory, I think that section is approximately around 190 feet, and WTC1 is over 200. The difference isn't much, but what's certain is that at that height, WTC1 was slightly wider.
I’d appreciate if you gave me the dimensions of the 30-71 floor compared to the original 1WTC. When you have buildings so big together even if their is a 75 difference you can’t really tell lol.
Alright, the measurements from the original blueprints are 186 feet for section 30-80 of the ESB, and in the WTC1, 207 feet at the center of the setback (which is what should interest you for visual comparison) or 200 feet without counting the setbacks.
Thanks for the information. It’s crazy to think how big those original towers were when the Empire State Building is a pretty bulky skyscraper and the Twin Towers are probably overall the biggest skyscrapers of all time in terms of just pure size. They were so wide and are one of the few skyscrapers that remained the same width and length up to the roof.
