You want to set up your own palette with watercolours, but all you have is a boring white plastic palette... There have to be better alternatives, which are more functional, more attractive or just nicer. I want to share four which caught my eye and won't break the bank either. I would love to know what you've found, so if you have spotted any innovations or neat designs, please share in the comments. 😊
There are so many out there, so we don't have to settle for boring. The last two I mention, because they have a great seal and gasket, would be great for gouache and acrylics too.
I mention a few links and I'm bad at putting cards into the film, so here they are:

These are the links to the palettes. These are not affiliate links. You may find them elsewhere at different prices, but this should get you going. I am sorry if you cannot find the exact same one in your country. Temu does not operate in all countries, but it's worth checking them out as they are half the price of Amazon. I know there are a lot of scare stories around Temu, but I have had no issues. It takes a while for things to arrive, but arrive they do. If you object to dealing with a Chinese company, then you will not be interested in any of these as they are all made in China whether they arrive through Amazon, Temu or any other retailer.

I enjoyed this selection of palettes Liz. I've recently bought a couple of "Kuggis" stacking boxes from IKEA.The lid with rim is great for mixing, the one I bought is 10" x 7" (26 x 18 cm), though there are other sizes and the boxes of varying depth depending on how much storage you want.

I have one like your blue one, its called Fusion 18 and is made by Mijello in Korea. It was recommended by Steve Mitchell of 'Mind of Watercolour', I have had it for several years now and just love it, highly recommended.

Thank you for talking about the palette that had some cracked paint and some still moist paint. I was wondering about that. I ordered a palette (like the one you showed) on Etsy that someone had filled with watercolors. The description said they were filled 3 weeks ago and were all dry. But when they came, all were dry except one Daniel Smith color (which of course was right by the opening clasp) and I directly put my thumb right in it😂
@LizChadertonArt

oh no! Always the way. yes, some never fully dry, but they do solidify. It doesn’t matter, but the potential for accidents is ever-present

I just started using one of those cheap white plastic shell palletes as a mixing area for my plein air kit. It just made things easier to mix on a bigger area than to fight with the real estate in my tiny paint pans. And I just pop it into a freezer bag with a paper towel when I am done. That's my greatest "invention" so far! 😂 Thanks for sharing these. I did fall for the very tiny tin. I have the black and white cow print version now! 😊

For over a year now, I’ve been using my “homemade” palette. I’ve got 15 pre-filled half pans in an altoids tin (held in with little magnets). I’ve enjoyed the challenge of sticking with the same colours and really getting to know them. I’m now thinking I might replace one of my greens with a more natural shade, but apart from that I’m still happy. (But I could be tempted by the little wooden palette or the tiny tin, they are so cute)

I have one of the cheap boring ones, one similar to the blue watertight one, but not watertight cos the price was higher at the time, and some in metal and enamel. They all work well and the plastic ones are nice with bigger wells. The cheapest leaks a little just from use as paint gets to the edges, but it’s only sitting on the desk. I mix gouache with glycerin to keep in pans and it re-wets well. Honey in watercolour keeps them wet and I keep getting it on my hands, but it’s lovely paint.

I have got the palette with the strap for my gouache & I truly appreciate how well it works. Definitely keeps it fresh like straight out of the tubes even in the hot Deep South of Mississippi. I really love all of these palettes but I haven’t got the other 3 although I really would love to get them. I am just getting to the point where I am thinking 🤔 I have way to much art supplies to keep organized & use up. Thanks for sharing this wonderful information!

The wooden one is really cute. Thank you. Liz, have you or anyone heard of a palette with paint (Daniel Smith) developing gnats? I have a plastic palette similar to the one you’ve shown that became full of gnats. Every time I opened it and attempted to pate, i was invaded by gnats. It seemed to me they particularly came from my green section. It was so bad that I had to put it away! Help, somebody. Thanks
@LizChadertonArt
@LizChadertonArt 9 месяцев назад
no, never. I know some go moldy… I don’t think DS has honey in (like M Graham or Sennelier), so we can’t blame that. I presume eggs are hatching, so I would open it up somewhere outside your house and let them hatch and leave. if it dries out, it will be less attractive. Alternately, find an airtight box, put it in open, squirt in insect spray and close quick to fumigate. Avoid spraying the paints directly. Prevention?? A cotton ball with citronella on it, stored with box as a natural insect repellent? these are ideas off the top of my head….

Hullo Liz, I want to recommend “The Portable Painter Palette” it started out as a kickstarter campaign! Now you can find it online at many outlets! They recently started making new pans that sit in the area reserved for a brush! So many options now! I love the 2 water tanks that slide onto the sides of the palette, having 2 water cups in a traveling palette is truly wonderful! Another feature of the portable painters palette is that with the cups snapped in place it fits right over most legs! It will also sit right up beside you on any level or near level ground. The best part is the cups encase your main palette and give added protection. It is just a great design and I hope you check it out! I know that you travel so much more than I do and I know that you will enjoy it.

I have one similar to that large blue one, but it has a clear tray. I don't like the clear tray unless I have space to set it on a neutral background so I can mix colors. I do use it to keep my swatch card protected/in place when I am not using the palette though! The one with the collapsible pot is neat!

Thanks for the video--so nice to see different options. I have a question for you--I started a new palette recently with a tiny amount of paint from tubes, then decided I wanted to change my color order. How do you get the paint out of the plastic paint well? Do you just add water, or do I need to pry it out with a palette knife? Can't quite figure out how to go about this. Thanks!
@mjpete27
@mjpete27 9 месяцев назад
Hullo Ellen, I have made a similar mistake and needed to switch my color order, depending upon what the palette is made of you will have more success with ceramics and some plastics. I “dig” out the dry paints and keep them in a safe place. I have moved 4 colors once and I got the paint out of all wells and then placed the paint colors I wanted to move with a small amount of paint then I put the pieces I had pryed out onto the wet paint then “glued” the rest with more paint from the tube! Now I have done this only a couple of times, but it does work ok. I have tried to make small swatches so I can avoid this mistake, good luck!
