Four In A Bed owner launches blistering attack on rival's business with 'standards so poor it needs to close' as Channel 4 show sparks 'game-playing' row
A Four In A Bed owner launched a blistering attack on their rival's business with 'standards so poor it needs to close' amid a ferocious 'game-playing' row.
The Channel 4 reality programme follows four bed and breakfast owners competing to prove their establishments are good value for money by visiting each other's enterprises and deciding the amount they think their stay is worth.
In Sunday's rerun episode, Blackpool Bed & Breakfast owner Malaya was laid into by a fellow contestant.
In the episode, two owners and two co-owners gathered to discuss the value of their stay at Malaya's B&B and give him feedback.
However, Malaya took exception to the 'harsh' feedback and picked out Phil and Maria in particular, questioning why they had given him the drastically low score of three.
Phil quickly shot back: 'The taps on the sink, turn the tap, the tap follows you.'
Malaya sarcastically apologised to Phil for his B&B not being a five-star hotel. This irked Phil who replied: 'What do you think about the taps spinning round and the shower overflowing? Is that normal? Is that what you get with B&B these days?'
Malaya argued that these issues were addressed, but Phil said they still indicated poor maintenance standards. He said: 'I think it needs more than improving. It needs closing.'
Leaping to Malaya's defence, fellow B&B owner Pete told Phil: 'That's out of order. To say that it needs closing is way over the line.'
Undeterred, Phil went as far as to shortchange his payment to Malaya by £25, again citing unfit room standards.
Malaya ended the episode in last place, with Pete claiming a joint victory with fourth and final owner Alex.
Saturday's episode saw tensions reach at an all-time high between four different B&Bs.
During the 'payment reveal' episode, one pair was called out for giving overcritical reviews.
Greg and Vicki were shocked by Dill and Darsy giving them a rating of 7 for facilities, blaming the snugness of their room.
An irritated Greg snapped: 'That's actually one of our biggest rooms, it's an old historic Cotswolds building and there was no other mention of anything bad about the facilities, which is why we thought three points for a small room was a bit unfair.'
However, Dill and Darsy stood firm on their feedback, citing the cramped conditions and short-changed their visit by £40.
But Greg argued: 'Our room is worth a lot more than that. I would task you with finding me a room like that for £80, you won't do it. Guys, welcome to the game players.'
After the heated exchange, Darsy and Dill insisted to the cameras in a confessional that they were not playing games.
When it was time for Ben and Freddie to confront Darsy and Dill's scathing hygiene score of three, the atmosphere was frosty.
Darsy justified their rating by revealing that their stay was marred by so many cleanliness issues that Dill's face was swollen from the dust.
At the end, Dill and Darsy underpaid a staggering £65, explaining: 'That goes to show that we were truly disappointed, it's just not fair.'
The owners extended an apology them both for the unsatisfactory conditions, assuring them that the matter would undergo a thorough investigation upon their return.
Nevertheless, when Brendon and Vicki's glamping service came under scrutiny Dill and Darsy remained unimpressed, not only due to the spotty Wifi but also because they disapproved of having to prepare their own breakfast, preferring full-service hospitality.
Opting to pay £29 less than the asking price, Darsy articulated: "We have been glamping quite a bit and we think there is competition out there and you have a nice place to offer if...".
Vicky, however, swiftly rebutted: "No, you're just supposed to compare our place for value for money, not compare it to somewhere else."
Another participant at the gathering spoke about financial tactics, swiping: 'I'm not surprised,' as another quipped: 'We've seen three big underpayments today.'
The collective accused Dilly and Darsy of deliberately underpaying individuals to edge ahead in the competition, while Darsy simply shook her head in denial.
Out of earshot from the rest, Vicky described the strategy as "outrageous".
Yet despite the high-strung atmosphere, Dilly and Darsy still managed to secure second place when the contest concluded.
