Along the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, the two-kilometer wide Zambezi River plunges over a hundred meters into a basalt gorge, producing one of the most spectacular natural sights I have ever seen (UNESCO agrees, having designated it a World Heritage Site in 1989.) I filmed this video early in September 2014, during the dry season when the river is near it lowest levels. In the rainy season, the spray from the falls rises high enough to be visible from twenty kilometers away; hence the local name for the falls, Mosi-oa-Tunya, the Smoke that Thunders.
