My thoughts exactly. They used the sponsor's product to show how it can be used to the greatest effect - and in a way that really isn't possible without that product (yeah 4 VMs on one machine could do it, but that would be windowed and slower and have it's own problems). The improvements for the community are a good bonus - though I think an option to downgrade should be free because of course it should be. If only Microsoft could be so enlightened.

They are one of the better software companies I have dealt with over the years. I had originally picked up this software in its 1.0 first release days, and they have always been straight forward and willing to work with a customer.

A Windows VM has consistently been the most reliable option for me. I just upgraded to VMWare Workstation 16 and the new Vulkan acceleration is phenomenal. My work laptop has a Quadro T1000 in it, which is roughly on par with the GTX 1050Ti. The virtualized GPU provided to my Windows VM is faster than a GTX 1050 in 3DMark. The overhead of their new GPU virtualization is ridiculously low. This isn't even GPU pass through, the GPU as far as Windows is concerned is a VMWare SVGA Generic display adapter. With VMWare Workstation 15, this wasn't even something I'd test out. I'm quite happy distrohopping now and using any software I want when the situation demands it. For business communications, that's Office 365 with Teams. It just is whether we like it or not. For my development work, that's an Ubuntu 20.04 VM. If I had to do. NET development I'd use Visual Studio in a Windows VM. With virtualization as good as this you really don't need to choose anymore.

The company that is now Synergy has completely raped the Open Source project it began as, you can not register on their forums to discuss anything before purchase. The changes Symless have made to the source code has prevented external front end's for the synergyc application is now broken intentionally, it gets harder and harder to find instructions on how to compile the source code they do provide. kubrix1222 Umm. You could use one system on multiple monitors, it's a normal feature of computers, so you wouldn't need Synergy. Unless you mean multiple Operating Systems in on system all running on one monitor?

4 VMs on one physical machine isn't difficult, I've done it myself. It does have more downsides though, and you can lose performance or features in ways you didn't expect. Not to mention the fact that each VM will run inside of a window, so that removes some of the pixels from each VM display.

They've basically already done this, just way more than 4 at once with unraid and VM's, the only difference is they were all windows, not really impressive to just change the operating systems, in fact it'd be a shittier version of the multiple gamers 1 cpu videos. This is way more impressive because it's showing how you can actually use 4 fully functioning, fully powered individual systems, that aren't sharing resources, on one monitor with one mouse and 1 keyboard, seamlessly.

Linus did this once with the dual VM machine.

I've always wondered why they run an ad that is irrelevant to almost everyone. Using Windows 10 and 7 side by side? Just use Windows 10 and live with the flaws. Want to do creative stuff on your Mac? You probably won't wanna use Windows. Wanna use Linux? Just ssh onto it. For games, there is still Steam in home streaming and it works great. And don't forget virtual machines.

As a support tech in an enterprise environment where all four of these operating systems are in use this type of solution has real possibilities. In my office I have actively running (and actively use) Win 10, Win 7, a second Win 10 test system, Mac Server, and Ubuntu. And, he is absolutely correct, the KVM I use was quite pricey.

Well there's also BSD and IBM z/OS... but those aren't really for the consumer.

Losttoanyreason I'm with you. I've recently been using my W10 laptop again and find it massively frustrating against using my standard Linux install. And Linux doesn't slowly fill up 75% of my available system memory after a couple of hours use. I'm not a fan of the aggressive prefetching MS has gone to in order to make their OS feel snappy. I'll take the half second delay instead.

yeah! I think LTT should make a gaming on Ubuntu video with all the changes to wine this year as well as feral porting games to Linux in vulkan. Compare to previous versions and them compare to Windows and see how much Linux has progressed as an open source and free operating system.

GoldenMacintosh that's how I do it myself, but like Linus said, hardware passthrough support is iffy. Playing games that want a GPU in a VM is really not feasible. It depends on your use cases, obviously. I mostly use it to run older and alternate operating systems and purpose-made Linux VMs, and for that, there's little to no need for passthrough beyond the standard mouse and keyboard handoff.

MarioMan My desktop is VM with graphics and USB PCI card passthrough. My computer is an ESXi host running pfSense, FreeNAS and Windows 10 all at once. Works perfectly. I'm looking at switching to Proxmox because it's open source.

MarioMan you could host each OS as a VM and have a graphics card for each VM, connect each graphics card to one monitor input. Then use synergy for keyboard/mouse.

I respect that. Mac VM's are always temperamental. And when I'm not working, my windows box also is my gaming rig. So, it works. Recently, I started using WSL, and I really enjoy it, which i guess is basically a VM. So now I'm down to my Mac, and my Windows box with WSL.

LG 43 UD79-B = $700 and can display 4 inputs all at the same time. StarTech 4 port HDMI KVM = $340 and can only display one input at a time.

I just bought a 2-port DVI kvm for $5 at a local shop. Not the greatest in the world but it's better than using a software solution for me because I like to be able to switch between the machines even when Synergy can't load. Maybe for other people synergy is better though.

You would still need multiple computers to run a KVM switch setup. A good KVM could cost anywhere between 200-800 usd anyways. And still only allows you to use one at a time. And you still need a Monitor. Overall this idea of 4 machines on 1 monitor isn't that bad. And can be cheaper than a KVM setup depending on what you buy.

Linux with Windows in a KVM with PCIe Passthrough and LookingGlass handles 2 OSes on One monitor and one Computer smoothly.

Owain Harris well I guess you could make a website and test it on safari, Google chrome, Firefox, and edge at the same. And if you code an app, you could test it on windows 7 and windows 10 at the same time while simultaneously porting the app (if you're a big production) to Mac and Linux at the same time.

Nazo I hated Windows 10 at first because of how bad Windows 8 was at launch, it got really good with 8.1, but I might just feel like that because of how bad it was to start with. Then Windows 10 launched with a lot basic features missing from 8.1 and massive driver issues, well more like the lack of them and a lot of compatibility issues and no support with essential programs

liam davis I mainly like win10 for the aesthetics, the main reason I hated win7 and XP. The extra functionality is mostly a bonus, I'm one of the few people who actually uses Cortana it seems

Personally I still dislike windows 10s implementation of their store. Hard to keep track of all the apps, manage those apps and general unpolished or unavailability of apps. I didn't know I had like 5 games that came with windows on my machine for like 3 years.

Did you watch the same video I just watched? They're a garbage company with a garbage product. Pay to upgrade to a worse version of the product, and you can't go back.
