In this episode of Four Play we compare the 16-bit conversions of the classic Sega arcade game Turbo Outrun. But which conversion is the best - Atari ST, Commodore Amiga, Sega Mega Drive or PC DOS? You decide!

It's surprising how low acceptable framerates were in the late 80's/early 90's. You can practically count them.

They weren't. Reviews weren't great precisely because of the crap frame rate.

For a long while, I didn't think much of this Mega Drive conversion of Turbo Out Run that I've played long years ago in video rentals... Now, looking at it and comparing with the other 16-bit systems, I do feel it's a masterful work by Sega indeed for the Mega Drive. Even when the system was still at its infancy, Sega was managing to get the best of the worlds technically. And it's unquestionable how well it plays, even being a reduced version of a Super-Scaler game. Too bad the Atari ST was with some technical issue while running... U.S. Gold converting Turbo Out Run on computers could be, at least, a little better than the Out Run crap they delivered. They've learned some lessons after all! I can't say much about the PC DOS version, though... But, at least, it's not beeping all the time!

As an old Amiga user - I have to admit that the sound of the disk drive operating sounds nicer in the ST chassis than the Amiga's - has a sharp reverberation almost

My thoughts: There is a clear winner and a clear loser this week, I don't think I need to go into too much detail. The Sega Mega Drive is the best conversion in every category, whilst the PC version, with its particularly stupid dashboard-like status panel is the worst by far. The ST and Amiga are both ok, but could have been better.

Agreed. The Amiga version looks like an Atari ST port with a bit enhanced sound (which isn't that great either). Considering the fact that this game is from 1989 they could do a whole lot better. Fun fact, back in the day the Mega Drive version didn't receive a high rating in several magazines either.

I played this first on the C64 and loved it. Then i upgraded to the 520STe and loved it all over again. So nostalgia tells me the STe is the best version, but it really belongs to the megadrive. Another awesome 4 way laird.

@@xXTheoLinuxXx " Considering the fact that this game is from 1989 they could do a whole lot better." I disagree. They could not have been a lot better. There were great racing games on the ST / Amiga, but none of them was a port of so much technically impressive arcade games like OutRun or Turbo Outrun. The needed amount of graphics onlyy would have been too high for floppy disks and ram sizes.

@@IBelieveInCode in 1989 there was the Atari STE, so they could use the blitterchip and the improved sound abillities. If it runs (almost) fluent on a C64 why is it so choppy on the 16 bits machines?

The dos version is by far the best IMO. The atari ST and and Amiga versions are slow & jerky, and honestly feel more like mid-80s 8bit conversions that have been given a 16bit-era colour overhaul. The Megadrive version plays better and is a lot faster, but the washed out colours and lack of object detail really break the driving illusion. The DOS version suffers from the poor music/sound conversion, but it has the fastest & smoothest animation and is the best looking overall despite only being 16 colour EGA. One of EGAs strengths is that it helps create a strong contrast between the colours which really makes the graphics pop and stand-out more. In this case the cars, road and side objects feel more detailed, which combined with the smoother gameplay, results in a much better illusion of fast driving. The half-assed adlib music was a letdown but at the end of the day the Outrun series is all about the driving and the DOS versions does that the best.

For me first place is easily Sega Genesis. It's good a good frame rate, lots of detail, and nice music and sound. Second place from what's shown here is PC DOS, despite the woeful lack of music. I mean, I think it's being shown with an unusually high spec PC clone for the time, but anyway the action looks smooth. With a more typical MS DOS machine spec for the time, though, it'd fall to last place for me. The Amiga and ST versions are basically tied for me. Maybe there's some difference here and there, but either way it's what I had at the time (I think I only played the ST version - NTSC, though). Choppy action, with less thrilling detail than I wished for at the time. But hey I can still bop to the music!

The Amiga version of Outrun was universally despised for its poor quality. When it came to the sequel, it doesn't look like they learned much.

Yeah it was atrocious, especially when you look at how much better even Lotus 1 was just a year later than turbo outrun

@@JohnnyWednesday Even the driving segment of Batman: The Movie, which came out the year before, was faster and smoother.

For me the Sega Genesis is the best of the 16 bit home ports whilst the PC DOS port is the worst.

Sega crushed this one for sure.
