Great Britain XVI,
Midland Pullman
and a Class 807 Delivery
at Windy Carlisle -
Four steam!
Ghost Class 807,
15 April 24
A Very windy day - Gales blowing from the north, through the station and across South Junction. I;ve done my best to keep the wind noise low.
With the Cumbrian Coast Furness section closed at Grange over Sands, the Railway Touring Co's Great Britain XVI ran from Lancaster to Carlisle via Hellifield and the Settle and Carlisle line (through snow apparently!).
We see it arrive into Platform 3. The schedule suggested - and the train crew believed - that the stock would be moved to the Holding Sidings for the layover. The signallers and operations staff decided it could stay in Platform 3. Tangmere uncoupled and ran back to London Road Junction to turn before heading light to Carnforth.
At Carlisle Tangmere was replaced, after a break for the travellers, by a pair of Black 5s for the run on to Glasgow Central via the Sou Western line and Kilmarnock.
We see the Black 5s at Upperby taking water in sidings normally used for parking tampers - the roads formerly leading to the erstwhile London Road Goods yard. This was to allow the Midland Pullman to run through the Upperby chord en route from Berwick upon Tweed via Newcastle and Hexham to the WCML and Crewe,
Meanwhile Britannia is seen being checked over in preparation for being turned and towed to Crewe in light steam but with the piston rods removed.
We head north of the station to see Great Britain XVI storms out of Carlisle for Glasgow.
Finally 807002 passes through the Citadel on its delivery run in Ghost livery from Newton Aycliffe via Darlington and Edinburgh to Oxley depot.
