Four Years and 500 Hours Later - 2016 John Deere X570 Update/Overview and Discussion

If you are in the market for a new mower, they are definitely worth checking out. I am in no way affliated with or sponsored by Deere & Company, but after several years in the lawn care business (and having owned, operated, and wrenched on over 30 lawn and garden tractors over the years), I feel it is necessary to provide some of my own insight and advice for anyone looking to buy. In this video, I discuss some more of my thoughts on the overall quality of the machine, address a few concerns I've had with it, and touch on a couple subjects that have been brought up by viewers in the comments of my previous videos.
Nearly four years after purchasing it brand new from our local dealer, the John Deere X570 has just about paid for itself and has served me well as the flagship mower for my local lawn care business. The machine saw a lot of use within the first 4 years of its life (far more runtime than the typical homeowner will put on their machine in that same amount of time), but now that my lawn care is winding down and I'm preparing to start a new chapter in my life, I have been slowly retiring it from commercial mowing duty. Lately, I have been mowing with my John Deere 318 and Cub Cadet 882 to keep them busy. The machine passed 500 hours in late April of this year, and I finally got around to cleaning/servicing it and making a 500-hour update video. To summarize the long video, here's what I think of the machine after 500 hours of use.
Pros:
-Kawasaki engine and K72 transaxle still work great, no major issues (aside from a leaking seal on the trans that was replaced under warranty)
-48A mower deck cuts great, it's my go-to machine when I have a lot of mowing to do
-Great ergonomics and comfort
Cons:
-Broke both front wheel spindles from riding over rough terrain
-Replaced traction drive belt (broke due to age) and one mower deck spindle and belt (due to neglect)
-Mower deck MUST be kept clean especially if mowing wet grass; welded baffles underneath create more areas for grass/debris to build up and create rust

Michael, I'm using my 2017 x570 for my primary mower for my solo lawn care business as well. I completely concur with the front end when I bought the x570 I did not realize the x580 had a different front end I've contacted John Deere to see if I can upgrade the x570 front end to the x580 front end. Deere say it's not possible do you know if that's correct. I am getting the 48 in front plow blade for this tractor to clear the driveway for personal use in the winter and are concerned with the load on the front axle due to the additional weight from the plow, although it is only an additional 115lbs. The X580 the front tires are 1 inch larger, 16 vs the x570 15. As far as the engine goes I've always been a huge fan of Kawasaki they're my favorite motorcycle brand so I was so happy when I was looking at these mowers that they're running Kawasaki engines. Also I've been on the lookout for rear wheel spacers just looking for a little bit more stability on Hills do you know of anyone that makes them? Looking for 1 inch spacers.

@@larrypage2089 The front axle attaches with a single nut and bolt, so it wouldn't be too hard to swap a heavier-duty X580 axle onto it. The problem is with the steering, since the steering on the X580 and larger models is fully hydraulic (no mechanical linkage). I believe the spindles are designed with that in mind - as far as I know there is no direct way to attach the two tie rods to the spindles. I think you may be better off swapping a front axle and spindles from a previous generation X500, since those had the heavier spindles but manual steering. Off-hand, the only wheel spacers I know of are 1/4" thick so you'd have to buy 4 for each side. You can get them from Xtreme Motorworks or Miller Tire.

Just brought home a used 2019 X590 with 162 hours on it. Your video, given your long history with this tractor, brings forth some terrific information. When you migrate into a "permanent" job, public speaking, marketing or sales would seem to be a good fit.

A lot of people seem to like the new X700 series. I just couldn't justify the size or cost of one. Nice tractors for sure, though!

@@MichaelTJD60 We use ours for snow cleanup, mowing our 8 acres, thatching and sweeping. We also pull garden carts around the yard sometimes. We mow trails in the woods too. We love ours and for the price back in 2013 it has become extremely reasonable for us. Nice comfortable seat and power steering makes it really enjoyable and I believe that's part of the john deere quality. Plus it has a kawasaki that tops the cake!

Wow! I just seen your video. I have a JD X534 all wheel steer. 484 hours on it. It’s been a excellent machine. I had to replace the drive belt. Because a wood chip flew up in the idler pulley jammed the belt and it came off. Kinda of a freak thing. I could not believe all the dirt caught under the seat area places where I never thought of looking. I want this to be my last mower as I’m getting up in age. Your video taught me a lot about the cleaning maintenance of my JD. Thanks so much for posting this video all the best to you.

Glad you enjoyed the video Larry - a lot of the same concepts and maintenance concerns should apply to your X534. These are designed to last a very long time with proper maintenance and the X534 is a good solid tractor.

I pull my boat, a plow, push snow, pushed an atv onto a trailer with my Wheel Horse 520-H. It's a belt drive and I haven't changed it in 300 hours since the restoration. It's a tough tractor. But someday it will need repair and parts won't be available, then I will get a Deere.

My 2011 X530 has 660 hours on it and I still love it. It's awesome to have a tractor that is worth running wrenches on it. He is right about the front end. Find a x530 or X580 with the power steering and the stronger front end. I just disassembled and cleaned my front end expecting to need to replace bushings. Nope all the bushings were still tighter than the new replacements I ordered to "rebuild" the front end. I have replaced the front wheel bearings a couple times though.

With enough grease the front axles and spindles on these tractors will last a lifetime. Wheel bearings are definitely prone to wearing out, I haven't had to replace them on this tractor yet but they're probably not too far from needing replacement now with 625 hours.

Thank you for the extremely thorough video and commentary. Purchased an x580 in July 2019. It just seemed like a happy medium in the X500 series. Based on what you demonstrated about the weak points of the x570, I am glad I purchased the X580 w/ 54" deck. I have just over 100 hours on it and use it to maintain a 3+ acre lot (2.3 acres of grass all on a sloping hill). My JD sales rep recommended it when I showed him pictures of the yard and property. Only one manufacturer defect early on - a defective PTO clutch. It was missing the rivets that held the clutch plate. It's been great since. I use it with a dump cart to move several hundred pounds of large rocks around the yard for landscaping projects and to haul a 350 lb chipper shredder up the hill for tree and brush cleanup. My only complaint is that it is almost impossible to find information on the available implements and tools online for the X580/590 (post-2017) and the JD site is not terribly customer friendly in that respect. I end up stopping at the JD dealer in person to discuss these to ensure I get the correct parts/kits.

I'm glad the X580 is treating you well! In hind sight it's definitely worth the extra money over the X570 for tasks like what you are doing. Slopes and uneven terrain are not kind to the front ends on the X570's. I agree that Deere's website is not exactly easy to navigate...you have to download the PDF of the brochure with all the attachments listed (www.deere.com/assets/publications/index.html?id=564ca32d#1). The site definitely needs some improvement in that aspect.

Always look forward to updates. Been researching this tractor for well over a year now and feel like I know every little detail about it. Maybe in the fall I’ll get a x580. I started looking at the x700 (x750 and x758) series and realized you could get a 1025R for almost the same money. Tractors sure are fun.

I highly recommend the X580. Or if you need a bigger tractor, for what they are worth you'd be better off jumping up to the 1 series. I wouldn't mind having a 1 series, but I'd probably have to sell all my other tractors off first.

A month ago I picked up a GT235. It has the 48" deck and 18hp Vanguard v-twin. It had 452 hours on it when I brought it home. The hood is gone, but it had new tires, new blades, new spark plugs and a fresh oil change and filter. It runs like a brand new mower. Starts right up every time. I gave $350 for it. I'd like to start a collection of John Deere mowers. I'd like to have nothing newer than my 235. I like watching your videos. They're very informative.

Good luck with the GT235, they are great tractors. Basically what evolved into the X570. You did good for $350...I would spend the few bucks on a new hood, it will look and feel like a brand new machine.

@@MichaelTJD60 Yeah I plan on restoring it over the winter after mowing season is over. Around here the older Deeres are hard to come by. When they do come along they're usually either clapped out beyond repair or priced into outer space.

Good video. My PTO clutch died at about 500 hours...bolt actually fell out. I replaced my drive belt at that the same time.

I'm surprised you only got 500 hours out of your PTO, were the threads inside the crankshaft stripped to cause the bolt to fall out?

@@MichaelTJD60 The bolt actually broke then fell out. The PTO had been getting noisy before the bolt broke. I believe the bearing was bad and caused the bolt to break. The surfaces of the clutch were badly worn also. Lots of metal filings around the magnets. Replaced PTO with a new one from JD. A lot of people are now using Xtreme PTO's. They claim they are better than OEM. I installed Loctite on the new crankshaft bolt and torqued to spec.

I have a 1999 GT235 with the 18 horse v twin Brigs and Stratton with 670 hrs. Haven’t a single problem with it.

Thanks for an informative video. Today I followed your advice to check underneath the flywheel cover. To my surprise and shock I found a mice nest. I carefully vacuumed the grass/insulation away and discover a damaged wire. I could only imagine a fire destroying my JD 500 mower.

Glad you caught it before it was able to cause a fire. Many people neglect cleaning out under the flywheel cover and that's what destroys so many of these air cooled engines. It doesn't take a whole lot of extra time to take them apart and clean them out, which will prolong the life of the engine greatly.

355's are neat tractors. I wish they had continued the V-twin diesel models into the X series rather than the air-cooled EFI Kawasaki's they are using now.

People have asked me if I worry about the CVT in my E100 all the time. If it ever did go bad you can replace it yourself for about 350.00 and only weighs 37 pounds versus the hydro at 890.00. The real problem is the 17.5 hp Briggs, In 26 hours the dealer has put 14 hours on it trying to get it to run right.

Those CVT's really aren't as bad as people make them out to be. I can't say the same for the Briggs engine though...had plenty of bad run-ins with those engines, and I'd be perfectly fine if I never had to work on another one.

Good choice. Given the cost, jumping up to the 1 series seems like the right choice compared to an X700 series. I'd rather have a 1 series over an X7 any day.

Great video, Mike. A lot of the issues you brought up are the same issues I have with my Grandmas Husqvarna GT52XLS, although I have to say Husqvarna's decision to use a treadle pedal on this tractor over twin touch is a slight turn off for me

I'm not a fan of the treadle pedal either. Kubota uses (or used) the same setup on their tractors and it just doesn't seem very ergonomic.

Thanks for the video. You supported a decision I just made to buy the x590 (being delivered in 2 days). I bought an X380 two years ago when we bought a new house that is on hilly and rocky terrain. I assumed the X380 was enough machine to handle it, but it was not. Too many times getting stuck when snow blowing and too many times not being able to easily get up a hill or around a boulder (on an incline). I was going to buy the X570 so that I could use my current snow blower, but then just decided to buy the X590 for the hydraulic lift. Your discussion on the front end spindles comforts me in my decision buying the X590, especially since I have rough terrain.

the hood on my x310 has worn the the same kind of groove (after almost 500hrs)as you showed on your cub cadet but the only way to avoid it would be to drive the tractor on a perfectly smooth ground and who has such a lawn?

Exactly - it's impossible to keep them perfectly smooth and straight when these machines are designed for off-road use.

Thanks for video. Mine has 38hrs on it and I just replaced the secondary belt. (part # M169500). Could be a defective belt or something got caught in it. Although I don't use it as much as you do, but the steering and front end is concerning. I might be out of warranty before it needs repair.

Make sure the pulleys on the deck are not bent or wobbling - hopefully it's something simple. If you keep the sector & pinion gears greased and take it easy on rough or uneven ground, you shouldn't have any trouble with the steering. Thanks for watching!

not sure if oil treating under the deck as you said is better than spray painting it as i just did...but using plastic care products/wax on the hood surface as I have before definitely helps

John Deere LX176. Sorry it took a while to respond. The hydrostatic trans was what screwed me. Perhaps I live /lived too far for anyone to know how to work on one. (It wasn't but 3/4 years old)I am not a stranger of wrenches and jacks either but...All I encountered at repair places was "you need a new transmission". Fine but; price of that was like buying a new one. So, my true story. The reason I commented is because I have bought a Hydrostatic 38 HP tractor. Hopefully (no indications otherwise) that the Hydrostatic Transmissions (concept and mechanics) have evolved to be more reliable. LMAO; it ain't a John Deere tho... Once burned... I don't want to trash the JD and it has been a long time. Merely wanted to afford a response to your reply @michealTJD60. Merry Christmas too BTW.

Great review! I have a LOT more confidence in my x570 being delivered this week. Yours looks brand new! What is your cleaning process... or rather what parts do you NOT power wash, and how do you keep those parts clean?

I've never used anything special to clean this machine - just a good pressure wash and wipe-down once or twice a season. Definitely be careful around the dash/gauge cluster and don't let water sit in any of the valleys around the mower deck pulleys.

Also make sure to blow the grass/dust/debris off after each mow - it will prevent build-up in the first place.

We have a gt 275 and 240 and they don’t have hour meters but if I had to guess they would have over 1 thousand hours on them, the Kawasaki’s never die, it’s just broke in! Edit- we actually have a “rare” 90s original JD hood with 0 cracks on it!

I don't know how but my dads 2004 Craftsman GT5000 with a Kohler Command 25hp is still on its original 16 year old drive belt with around 800 hours and it sits outside uncovered. Plus our yard is no where near flat as we live in Southwestern PA and have 3 acres.

I have the same GT5000, great runner 48" deck bagger 44" snowblower. Very capable with the k66. I want to upgrade because I would like a flat floor in front of the seating area instead of the big hump. I've lost a lot of mobility from a car accident.

Outstanding review. I've really been struggling on what kind of mower to buy. I learned a lot from listening to you about this mower. I think you know more about them the sales guys do. I've got about 3 acres and need a heavy duty mower. With tax this mower was quoted to me at $7,375. I thought about some zero turn models but for the money and the hills and terrain I have, Ive decided a tractor is the way to go. The biggest thing you got me thinking about is the front end. I have rough terrain so I may jump up to the 580. I'm thinking a John Deere may be in my future. This was a two year old video so I hope you are doing well. Nice job young man on your review. Very thorough and expertly done.

Thank you for the nice comments Robert and sorry for my late reply. If you have rough terrain the X580 is definitely the way to go - I don't feel it's worth gambling with the lightweight front end components on the X570 unless your yard is perfectly flat.

this is why i am keeping my uncle's 2002 john deere GX325 tractor. has a steering gearbox and a cast iron front axle i think the spindles are all original same with the front wheel bearings. of course i do not use it commercial i think it it would be fine if the terrain is very bumpy or has dips like ours does i NEVER drive fast i always go VERY SLOW. So that you don't go WHAM WHAM!😅

The GT235 uses rack and pinion steering just like the X570. An older design but the same basic concept. Large gearboxes haven't really been used on Deere lawn equipment since the early 90's.

For what it's worth, I would spend the money on the X580. Just enough bells and whistles and you won't have to worry about flimsy steering or expensive EFI components.

I found a Gates kevlar drive belt on a different machine and it is tough, long lasting, but expensive. For commercial use, I will stick with Gates.

The kevlar drive belts are very good quality, but I would be worried about the fitment on the pulleys. Deere's pulleys have a special V-angle to them that most aftermarket belts won't fit tightly - and for that reason they tend to stretch and slip.

Unfortunately, yes the spindle bearings on these decks are sealed. But it won't hurt to grease them anyway, to reduce wear from heat.

The plastic pulley isn’t even the thing that goes out, it is the metal bushing that goes out that tears up the pulley

Yes, but the metal bushing cannot be (easily) replaced and requires changing the whole pulley when it goes out.

Thank you. As far as I know, the front axle remains the same - Deere still lists AM144206 as the part number today. The more recent X570's I've seen appear to have the same front axle as mine. I know there are a handful of us out there who have had issues with the front ends on these tractors but Deere does not seem to want to do anything about it. For a long-term owner I think it would be ideal to swap an axle from an older X500 series - they're getting to the age where many are being retired or parted out now, so a good used front axle probably isn't too hard to get.

There's quite a jump up in price from the 570 to the 580, maybe this is one reason why. Absolutely no reason for me to buy a 700 series, tho I'd certainly like to own one. I have around 3.5 acres, 95% of it level, not all smooth lawn but ~2 ac. bumpy field. I fear the weaker axel assembly on the 570 might be an issue.

Good video. Gives me plenty of tips regarding what to look out for when doing routine maintenance. ave you every had issues restarting after running out of gas? Ii have a 2020 model year X570 and so far, my only complaint is getting the engine restarted after running out of gas. It cranks for what seems like forever until it finally catches. The fuel filter ends up with a trapped air bubble and the fuel pump can't seem to get rid of it.

I can't say I've ever run my tank low enough for that to happen, but I suppose it's possible. That fuel has to move through a good 4 feet of line from the tank to the pump, so a little cranking is to be expected. You could pull the air filter off and dribble some gas down into the carburetor to help prime it. But unless you're parking it for the winter, I wouldn't recommend running it empty.

2006 with the introduction of the X series...pretty much any plastic hood they produced before then (1986-2005ish) had a tendency to shatter like glass. That's not to say the X series hoods are indestructible, but they are 10x better than what they replaced.

Hi Michael, this was a really good review. I came across it while binge watching x590 videos all day (and I had already subscribed to you last year or so, lol). I still have the original traction drive belt on my 2003 GT235 (520 hours) and it's steering is getting really really loose. I wonder if the sector & pinion are worn like your first set did. Front bearings are wobbily, axle wiggly, but it's been a great machine for mowing & snowplowing...but im ready to upgrade to a x500 series. And tho I would LOVE an x750 or an x758, I cant logically swing it for the exact same reasons you spoke of. Did you ever take your 570 to a PA Plow Day ?

Thanks! I've never done any dirt work/garden work with this tractor and don't have a sleeve hitch for it, so no it has never been to plow days. I won't be using it for that kind of work, but it would probably pull a Brinly sleeve hitch plow just fine with enough weight added. I would check the tie rod ends and the sector/pinion gear on your GT235 to see if you can tighten up the steering - a little wear is to be expected for a machine of that age and that many hours. Unfortunately I experienced worn-out steering parts way too early in the life of my machine.

While I get the “economy” part of it for the X570 model, that’s pretty shitty on Deere’s part to use X300 parts, I sure will never buy one for the property I have now. I personally have never driven a new GT though, in comparison to an older one like I have. On the plastic hood note, we have a 4720 compact tractor with a PLASTIC hood, and it has survived a tornado without a lick on it, and it has 1,400 hours and is still kicking.

If that isn't a testament to the modern Deere plastic hoods, I don't know what is! I wouldn't mind having one of those compacts someday. The new garden tractors definitely aren't as tough as the old ones, but I wouldn't pass up the opportunity to run one if you ever get the chance.

You can thank the steel shortages and resulting surcharges for that. I work for an ag equipment dealer and we have to keep dealing with price increases with every machine we order from the factory. There's not enough material to go around (and not enough people willing to go back to work and bring production back up to speed).

Yes - their recommended service intervals are a little too generous. I cut the service intervals in half for this particular tractor and it has proven helpful - since I was using it commercially at the time, the oil was pretty dirty by the 50-hour mark.

As far as I know the later X500 has the heavier duty front end - hence why they market it as a Multi-Terrain model. The giveaway is the hard plastic hub caps over the front wheels (models with the lighter front axle like the X570 use soft plastic/rubber hub caps and the spindle shafts are smaller). Deere made the switch to the lighter X300 series front end when the X570 came out.

@@trucks_n_tractors_6335 the x model is a decent one but the big tractors are junk because once they break you can't fix the you have to take them to the dealer because they put computers in them that only jd has access to and the small lawn mower rider's are extremely shitty they barely work jd made it impossible to change the oil only there filter can be changed and only jd sells the filter for 60 bucks they also have a lot of transmission problems because they use plastic transmissions with variable drive that always breaks you also can't change the fluid in the transmission

Hey Dave, the LT190's are pretty good machines with the Kawasaki engines. Only major issue with them is the K46 transaxle which is the same one used in the L/LA/D/E100 series and is a non-serviceable unit...so if you mow any rough ground or hills, it may not last. If your yard is flat and you don't plan to pull any heavy loads or ground-engaging attachments, it should hold up just fine. Also be careful with the hood as the plastic hoods on that era of JD's were very brittle and would break like glass.

I have my dealer trying to sell me a 2016 x580 with 500 hours on it for $3900. The mower looks and runs good aside from some normal wear and scratches. I mow 8 properties not nearly the acreage you were mowing,maybe like 3 acres every 2 weeks or so. I'm new to Kawasaki engines and this grade of mower. I'm coming from a little cub cadet ltx1040. Assuming that the mower I'm lookin at has been well maintained hour many hows would you expect to be able to get out of one of these? They dealer could tell I was sceptical and he pointed out another mower they had that was an x350 that had over 1200 hours on it and it looked and ran as good as the x580. Would it be a worthwhile buy at the price they're asking? I dont mind small repairs like spindles,belts,tires. I just dont want the engine or tranny to leave me hangin. Appreciate your thoughts and time.

You won't have any issues with the engine or transmission - the Kawasaki's have proven themselves to be nearly bulletproof and are used in most lines of commercial mowers these days. I've seen them reach 2500-3000 hours without any issues (given proper maintenance, of course). The K72 transaxle is a lot beefier than your typical belt-drive lawn tractor transaxle and is pretty heavy for what it is - the only issues you may have to worry about are stripped input shaft splines on the top (which is the nature of that design). With an X570 the biggest area of concern is going to be the steering linkage and front axle - personally I'm not afraid of any other items on the machine.

Would it be possible to swap that front axle and the steering setup on that tractor out for one from a 100 or 200 series so you have a much stronger steering box and spindles? Thought about that after watching. Other than that great video its unfortunate that you have had to replace spindles on that already and i'm surprised that belt lasted as long as it did.

With proper maintenance, these should see 2500-3000 hours pretty easily. The oldest X500 series from 2006 are seeing those kind of hours nowadays.

Excellent videos on the X570. Correct me if I'm wrong, but excluding the 1hp difference & different seats, the only major difference between the X570 & X380 is the rear end? Both use the same front end components. Is there any difference in the frame? In your opinion is the K72 serviceable tranny & locking differential worth the additional $1800 over the sealed K58? Is the K72 that much superior? I will be retiring my old JD L110 with 632 hrs and taking a hard look at the X380 or X570. It's tough deciding between the two - I just don't know if the value is there in the X570, unless the K58 is a real turd. I don't like the fact the K58 is sealed & changing the fluid/filter is not part of the regular maintenance The JD dealer said the X380 would do the job for me (cutting, Cyclone rake), but from reading different reviews and postings, I'm not so sure. I have roughly 1 acre, 10-15 degree slope & rough terrain (holes, roots, uneven turf).

Excellent questions. The K58 is a stout transaxle and is usually pretty trouble-free, BUT in the long run you would be putting less strain on a K72 especially with your uneven ground. These hydro transmissions build a lot of heat, and the oil in them will break down over time as a result - hence why changing that oil every 200 hours is so important. The fact that the K58 is sealed is really its only major downfall. When you consider how much time and effort is involved in dropping the K58, splitting it, and changing the oil, I think the extra cost of the K72 is justified. If you plan to use your tractor for snow removal, you will appreciate having the diff lock and beefier internals of the K72 as well. I always say, it's better to have more machine than you need, rather than having a machine that's too small or light-weight for the job (not that the X380/K58 is small or lightweight, but it's not as substantial).

While the 380 may be perfect for my 1/2 acre with mild hill, I’m really in love with the 570. To me, it’s kinda like buying an old Corvette; the 350 motor does the job, but why wouldn’t you get the 427? Furthermore, if I buy this on the 1.9 for 48 mos finance, it’s $50 a month more for the 570 Thanks for your videos I’ve learned so much.

There are some earlier X500 series models running around with 2500+ hours on them. The liquid cooled engine models will tend to outlive the air cooled ones between rebuilds. A lot of commercial zero-turn mowers run these same engines and it's not unusual to see them rack up 3000 hours before the engines need rebuilt or replaced.

I cant stand when people try to compare there lawn tractor to a John Deere X500 series machine or the Cub 2500 and XT3 series garden tractors. Do they honestly think that something they can buy at the big box store competes with machines that weight 2-3 times more than them, and can pull thousands of pounds and do ground engaging tasks? Some people even go as far as saying that there for example Craftsman T210 is better than a KUBOTA BX! People need to be educated!

Hello good reviews thanks ; my question is I’m thinking of purchasing a X570 without power steering is it going to be a task to use a snowblower/blade and what do you think about the front mounted electric lift offered by John Deere to aid snowblower and blade lifting, also adding a little down pressure also with this extra weight from this attachment as well as the snowblower/blade makes steering very difficult? I’ve read in many reviews that the steer is nice and tight turning radius and fairly light ; but with this attachment as well as the snowblower make for difficult steering? Thanks John

For what it's worth, I would buy an X580 with hydraulic lift and the heavier-duty front axle. Both the foot-controlled manual lift and the electric actuator lift on the X570 are kind of clumsy for a heavy attachment like a snowblower, and hydraulic lift will tend to be much more reliable in the long run (electric lift may last a few years before the actuator needs replaced). If the X570 front axle and spindles can barely take the abuse of a rough lawn (from my experience), I wouldn't trust them to handle the weight of a snowblower either. Steering with a blade or blower up front should not be much of an issue if you are using plenty of counterweight (a must-have for snow removal), but I still wouldn't advise it - the steering components on the X570 just aren't built for it.

Of course, if you're only managing a small, flat driveway you might be able to get away with an X570 for snow blowing or plowing, but I prefer to have an overbuilt (more stout) machine than an underbuilt one.

@@John-ev3cz Most dealers will not put a 42" deck on an X500 series so you may have to special order it. For a small driveway and flat yard I think you should be OK. Just keep the front end components greased, and use plenty of counterweight for the plow/blower.

They can be bought from your Deere dealer, Lowes or Home Depot for about $30. They are made to fit most generic high-back seats so it is a pretty loose fit. I have one of these on all of my garden tractors, some fit tight while others are slightly loose. But well worth the money.

What's your property like? If it's rough or hilly then you'll definitely want to go bigger than an X570. I personally would stay away from the 4-wheel-steering because it involves a lot more components that wear out and will need replaced. An X580 should do you just fine.

@@MichaelTJD60 I have a fairly flat in town lot with 8 oaks and a maple all 2' dia +. The leaf amount is amazing. I live in a snow belt with an average of about 115 inches of snow a year. There's about 140 ft of double wide to snowblow and less than 1/4 acre of grass to cut... but not all at the same time 🤣

Are you referring to the 400 series (400-430)? I'd say probably the 430 being the Yanmar diesel is a 5000+ hour engine, with the 420 being a close second. For the 425-455 series, you can't really go wrong with any of them as the Kawasaki liquid cooled engines (with the upgraded cam gear) are as tough as the Yanmar diesels. Of course, this all banks on whether the machines have been given proper maintenance over their lifetime.

Hi again Sarge ; thanks for all the replies ; I visited my local John Deere dealer today looking at the 570 and 580 and thinking about my age like you and others mentioned and the aid of having power steering and hydraulic lift of the 580; I might bite the bullet and spend extra cash and get the 580; had him give a quote; the 580 with the 44 inch snowblower , 42 inch deck / manual mulch kit , 48” blade / manual angling kit , (3) suitcase weights , Terragrip traction belts , front weather bra , large seat cover. I can’t find part numbers and costs of individual decks 42A , 48A , 54A so I can se what I was discounted for swapping out 54A for 42A do you have any idea? Sounds like a great package! I honestly don't know the pricing for individual mower decks so I don't know how much of a price difference there would be between the 42A and 54A, but going with the smaller deck will definitely save you a good chunk of change.

Not really...just someone who has broken, fixed, and put enough hours on these machines to see how they behave. Studied engineering in school and earned a degree in a related field, but life sent me in a different direction.

Yes, the differential lock comes in handy for hills. I have mowed plenty of hills with mine. You can also add weight or change to a more aggressive tire if need be.

It does use a little bit of oil between changes (every 50 hours), but nothing significant. I'm curious to see what the cylinders look like after 500 hours.

John Deere Turf-Gard 10w30, which is made by Valvoline. It's recommended for these machines and is a decent quality oil for the cost. Plus, it's what the engine was broken in with, so I wasn't going to change that.

Thanks I bought a used x500 with 400 hrs and put 100 hrs on it last year. The dealer said they adjusted the valves when they went through it and I would need to have them adjusted every 200 hrs . You seemed to be very knowledgeable and The manual says to do it I just wondered if it was necessary thank you.

@@caseih-pz9vp Definitely necessary. I've heard these engines can toss the valves or valve seats if you run them too long without adjusting the valves.

The comment about decks with fake grease fittings is because of the JD's they sell homedepot, there not real JD, I've owned a 1995 JD455 and lx188, all get greased when getting ready to mow and not once have I had to replace a bearing or the shaft on any spindle.

The 30-year-old decks on my 210 and 318 still have their original sealed bearings (no grease fittings) and have a lot of life left in them. It's amazing how long they last. I've had greasable spindles on some of the cheaper models self-destruct as the aluminum just warps from heat stress over time.

I agree with you there, but there's another part to having that higher price tag that is often overlooked. You're also paying for good parts and service support from your dealership, and the large following/fanbase that comes with the green paint. My Deere dealership always has the parts I need and have worked with me to fix any problems that I've faced with my machines - not just the X570, but my 40+ year old 210, 318, and other old models I've owned over the years. Parts will still be readily available for the X570 in future decades, and there will still be plenty of knowledgeable forums & literature to turn to when it comes time to fix them. They'll never be "obscure" and when it comes time to look for parts or repair/tech advice, the info will always be there. This isn't always the case with some of the other brands. Several of my neighbors who mow their own lawns, and customers who hired me after giving up on their lawn, have complained to me about the horrible parts support for their lower-end lawn tractors made by MTD, AYP, or other competing brands. More than a handful of them are replacing their machines every couple seasons because they either can't find the parts to fix them, or cannot find a shop that wants to work on them. For example, I ran a couple late-model Cub Cadets for backup mowers when my Deere's were down (even before the X570 came along), and our Cub Cadet dealer often had a hard time finding parts for the machines which were only a couple years old - it seemed like buying parts was always a challenge with them. One customer hired me to mow his lawn the whole season because he broke a belt on the first day of mowing, and Sears/Craftsman could not find him a new one - the machine was only a year old, too.

@@nickw8066 Zero turn mowers don't have the all-season versatility of garden tractors. Yes some manufacturers offer snow plows for the front of a zero turn, but as far as I'm concerned they're less efficient than a shovel. My garden tractors can easily switch back and forth between lawn duty, garden duty, or snow duty and are in continuous service year round. Plus, a garden tractor can be set up with aggressive tires, 3-point or sleeve hitch attachments, weight brackets, lights, hydraulic lift and float, etc... and are just a better-suited machine for doing most tasks. I used garden tractors from the very beginning and it was always nice to be able to easily change attachments if the customer wanted other tasks done around their yard or garden.

@@nickw8066 Another option for me would be a front-mount mower like a Deere F series or Toro Groundsmaster, basically for the same reason - they can be used year-round and there are far more accessories and attachments available for them compared to zero turns.

48" or 54" deck? With the COVID-related material shortages and price increases, I'm surprised it's not more expensive than that. $6k was the price we paid in summer of 2016 when it was a new model (and before the world turned upside down).

@@MichaelTJD60 well I guess I'm not. 570 with the 54" is out of stock at three dealers closest to me. I have them checking on 580 now. Dang 580 is a thousand more though that I wasn't prepared to pay.
