Lyon iS a commune in therhône-eastern France, France. Seat ofthe council of the metropolis ofLyonNote, to which its special statusconfers both the attributions of ametropolis and a department, it is alsothe capital of the arrondissement ofLyon, that of the departmentalconstituency of the Rhône and that ofthe Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Itsinhabitants are called Lyonnais.
The commune has a location as ageographical crossroads of thecountry, north of the Rhone corridorthat runs from Lyon to Marseille.Located between the Massif Centralto the west and the Alpine massif to the east, the city of Lyon occupies astrategic position in north-southtraffic in Europe. Former capital ofGaul at the time of the Roman Empire,it is the seat of an archbishopricwhose holder bears the title ofprimate of Gaul. Lyon became a verycommercial city and a first-ratefinancial centre during theRenaissance. Its economic prosperitywas also driven at that time by silkand printing and then by theappearance of industries includingtextiles, chemicals and, more recently,by the image industry.
Lyon, historically an industrial city, has hosted many petrochemical activitiessouth of the city along the Rhône, inwhat is called the chemical corridor.After the departure and closure of thetextile industries, it graduallyrefocused on high-tech sectors, suchas pharmaceuticals andbiotechnology. It is also the secondstudent city in France, with fouruniversities and several grandesécoles. Finally, the city has preservedan important architectural heritageranging from the Roman era to thetwentieth century through theRenaissance and, as such, thedistricts of Old Lyon3, from the hill ofFourvière4, the Presquile5 and the slopes of the Croix-Rousse6 areinscribed on the UNESCO World
Heritage List.
In 2019, Lyon is, by its population, thethird municipality of France with522,969 inhabitants, the city-center ofthe second urban unit with 1,685,494inhabitants and the second attractionarea of France with 2,280,845inhabitants. It is the prefecture of theRhône department, the
Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, theSouth-East defense and security zoneand the headquarters of themetropolis of Lyon, which bringstogether 59 municipalities and
1,411,571 inhabitants in 20197. Thecity exerts an attractiveness ofnational and European importance. Itsimportance in the cultural, banking,financial, commercial, technological,pharmaceutical, arts and entertainment fields make it a worldcity of "Beta-" rank according to theGaWC ranking in 2020, comparable toOsaka, St. Petersburg or Stuttgart8.The city is also home to theheadquarters of the InternationalAgency for Research on Cancer since1965 and Interpol since 1989.
