Fox Knives FKMD FX446ODS Review. I have owned the FX-446 GR from FKMD for almost 4 years now. It's folder which get used heavily by me and I don't care if it gets wet or dirty. It's built tough and meant to be used not looked at. I decided to get a FX-446 ODS because the FKMD FX-446 ODS features some wicked serrations. Serration on a knife, particularly a folder for EDC are extremely useful for cutting cords and ropes much faster than a straight edge. That's physics. FOX Knives, really know how to design and implement such serrations. The FKMD FX-446 ODS has all the same cool features as my FX-446 GR. Here I will explain all.
Made in Italy
comes with a Torx wrench for changing the directional carry of the pocket clip and all other bolts, including the main pivot.
Totally recommended.

I actually used to own they plain edge model! Definitely a good folder just didn’t carry it was much as I wanted. If I got one again I’d try the aluminum handle model. Great review brother!

Hi there, yeah I wanted an Al handled one but I thought they stopped making them? Maybe they are only made for the USA market now? Yeah other one, the non-serrated gets pretty much used all the time from cutting electrical wire (not the best thing for knife LOL), to just about everything else, including dried meats on day hikes (it can be seen used in many videos here) LOL. But I rally wanted to get this serrated version because I just find serrations are better for me cutting cords all the time and ropes or similar and those serrations make short work of that stuff. Plus a little known secrete, actually shown to me here by a long term subber that serrations are great for making feathers. I tried this out with some big knives such as my Combat Survival knife from FKMD and lo and behold, it worked like a dream and much much better than just shaving the timber with a straight edge. As always mate thanks for watching!

Bush Camping Tools Man I’m not sure maybe they don’t make them anymore! And I did hear that before about serration for feathersticks! I haven’t tried it yet but as you know I’m a fan of serrations as well I find them pretty damn useful. Cheers buddy 🍻😎

Thanks! Yeah forgot to mention in the video (I've added it to the blog) that the tang of this knife has been surface treated to make it rough for a no slip of the liner. Not sure what they done exactly but am awaiting an answer. I see it too on my other FX446 from them.

@@BushCampingTools I'm curious about your opinions on that. I am not into folders at all. Have a few and for EDC in Light Clothes, they are okay. But besides that, fixed are more stable, less dirty / more easy to clean, you can pry with them no time for opening process (weapon use) and so on and on.... Looking forward to hear your opinions.

Nice review. One question about the lawks: Now of course Extrema Ratio produces military knives, I have the Mf2 and the MPC. Both have safety locks. The MF2 is a medium folder (thinner blade), but a military knife. This FKMD is also a tactical knife with a safety. But the question is how much abuse such locks would withstand in a vigorous testing situation. I mean to say, that if there is a military purpose, one could try to pry a box open with the knife, fight with the knife, hit something hard accidentally, or just use it as a tool. In this case under normal use, Lawks should be fine. But in case someone tries to fight or abuse the knife, throw the knife, Lawks could not be enough, and fail? which would beat the military purpose. So while in the Heaviest (HF1) folders the thick safety pin is a good redundancy, the Lawks is in effect just a limited safety, which could fail? Or is it a full safety, but would damage the system on the cost of saving your fingers? Should it not be able to withstand military usage? I mean one has to be careful with a folding knife all the time. But if some soldier stabs with the knife and it folds back on his fingers.... Look at the dark talon. It has no safety pin, yet a very long blade. So how do you figure the intended usage of a knife would be with a safety system such as Lawks system? A medium safety system or a strong safety mechanism to save one's fingers? So what kind of abuse can it take and not take do you think? I read your article about the need for redundancy for military knives, but it does not in effect cover, the real-life usage strength and weakness. So in that sense, Lawks is either a good medium-scale safety meant to save fingers only, or a great, strong safety in knife usage to withstand abuse.

@BushCampingTools 3 года назад
Hi Andras, firstly thank you for your great comments here as usual! And thanks for taking the time to read my article as well! Ok, these are all good questions you ask. I think upon care examination of the LAWKS system, this would only prevent accidental closure when grabbing the knife and ones fingers rubbing against the liner and accidentally actuating it. As for relying upon this in order to exact powerful thrusting upon the blade and have it not fail, I think it might just prevent closure but would be deformed as the blade would act in effect as giant lever and hence exert a strong force upon it. So the question is, would the blade still be able to be closed and the answer I believe is yes it would. I think in reality if one is relying upon a folder of any sort (unless an ER one with a pin inserted), whether that be an ER with their version of the LAWKS or the FKMD version; to use a a weapon as you mention, then it will be a desperate situation and obviously hand to hand combat (which by itself in reality is a desperate situation-unlike how the movies portray this sort of thing). I have seen ER knives fail with their LAWKS type system becoming deformed (the knife was abused of course and not plunged into something soft but into wood). When i use these knives I only use the safety to prevent an accidental closure. If I'm really doing something stupid with the ER knives, I put the pin in and then it is impossible for it to accidentally close what ever you do, the knife frame would have to break. The bottom line is some of these ER knives one could lever with because the blades are so thick and the T8082 scale material is very very strong (same stuff lots of rock climbing hardware is made from). Certainly some years back I asked ER directly what Aluminium alloy they were using and they told me it was T8082. Also the stop pin on this FKMD knife is very thick for this sized folder and implies to me one can apply great forces upon the blade during cutting and there will be no chance of deforming this pin as it also sits within very thick liners (over 1mm); just another thing to consider. Of course if the knife is kept very sharp then one should have to exert great force to cut anything, but who knows in the military. Maybe I might ask some guys I know who were ex soldiers. I think the ER models with the pin are the only folders I would care to use in an abusive way and not be afraid of accidental closure but only with the pin in. Hope that sort of addresses your questions.

You covered alot. Good review. Where is the knife made? I haven't heard "OD" since I was in the military many moons ago. Side note. When I was in Melbourne, they Aussies told me they could only carry a knife that I would call a boxknife, not a folder and definitely not one assisted, stiletto, or switchblade. Regardless, I carried a 3 1/2" backlock folder in Victoria, Queensland, WA, and Tassie. But is is probably different in the rural areas. US knife laws have loosened a great deal in many states. Wasn't sure how knife laws were in outback or surrounding areas.

@@willieboy3011 Personally I don't like serrations on a small blade, they take a lot of place and where often found on inferior quality knives. But yes, they can be useful as a fisherman or diver everything with rope involved.

Hi there. Well knife laws have changed a bit since i was a kid (back in the late 60's) but where my folks are it's a rural area and every Tom Dick and Harry (maybe I should add "Harriet"!) was carrying a folder all the time and strapped to your belt in a pouch. Well they stopped that and one day my dad got pulled up by the cops in town (he was just walking to the local shops as usual) and asked to remove it from his belt so it could not be seen. But every farmer in the region carries a damn folding knife since it's so useful and necessary tool around the farm. Sometimes though you can still see guys coming into town with the gun rack and two rifles in that rack inside the car. No one bats an eyelid but knives? Plus locally there are these stupid supposedly tobacco shops that sell all sorts of crap "zombie" knives, what they are for other than movie props I'm not sure. These shops give legit knife owner/users a bad name via the press with noting better to do. There are still the old barber shops where one can get a hair cut, post a letter and buy a rifle all in the same shop but they are dying out, run by old timers and all in smaller rural towns. None left in any big cities now, at least not in my state. Yeah I had a good laugh when you mentioned the OD! I reckon when you were in Melbourne, I'd place the time around when back locks were very popular here too and still are rurally. A "box knife" not sure what that would have been but we used folders called "bag knives" (like a kind of sheep's foot) all the time for work cutting open (as their name suggests) big hessian bags of produce. Stilettos and switch blades have always been illegal as far as i knew but then when they were sort of popular I was a kid so wasn't concerned at all with what the was were LOL, just doing kids things. I also had some "hand me downs" /souvenirs from an uncle who was in the military (army) he gave me the standard issue folders at the time (they were English made). Was that military guys who told u that re the box knives? My military (army) mates all complained saying they had to buy their own knives and the one which was recommended at the time was some pricey Buck knife. BTW Buck still holds the market in Australia for folders etc and can be found many rural gun shops. Thanks to KitSnap for answering your query as to the origins of the FX-446 ODS.
