In 2020 the independent vote was about 28% of the electorate, give or take, and Biden won them by 8 points. Assuming all other things remain equal, if Harris wins this group by 12, this would likely lead to a comfortable win in all the swing states, including NC. However, things aren't looking equal-Harris has a massive advantage over Trump in fundraising, enthusiasm, and ground game resources. Plus there is the Dobbs effect, which over the last two years pollsters have consistently missed. All of this means that Harris is in a very strong position to win this big.

The Springfield debacle squeezed out any charitability and nuance towards Trump with regards to solving immigration. People are willing to extend more charitability towards Republicans but not if it means throwing an unserious sideshow based on conspiracism than actually solving the issue. Especially if the diehard supporters are putting more gas on the issue. That is despite a lot of voters thinking that Biden and Harris did too little too late and hence being unserious on the issue. Its not that Harris winning people over (voters have made their issues with her clear); it's that Trump is pushing people away.

Can someone explain to me what an Independent voter is? Is that someone that doesn't pay for party membership? How's it different from swing voters? Coming from Australia, this idea seems unusual, because most of our voters in Australia don't align themselves this way. You'll often have people vote the same way for their whole lives, but not pay for membership or donate, so we don't even have a separate category for 'independent voters'

In the U.S., an independent voter is simply someone who doesn't express any affiliation with any political party. I'm assuming based on the name that a swing voter in Australia is a voter that can vote for any candidate. An Independent voter is essentially the U.S. equivalent.

Independent voters are voters who at the time of registration chose to not affiliate with a party. Party membership is usually free in the US

There is no paying for party membership. When registering to vote, the voter is given the option to select the party they mostly closely align with or to just leave it blank. Those who do not choose a party are called 'independent' voters. A swing voter who has traditionally or in a previous election voted for one party or person but switches for another election.

That is good. Some panic and a sense of urgency is what will lead to a Kamala landslide. Complacency among the Dems is the key ingredient that led to a Trump win in 2016. He will be utterly deprived of that ingredient this time around.
