FPP Mummy 400 B&W Film - Launches TODAY! - Large Format "Friday"

Film Photography Project aka the FPP has been supporting the greater film photography community since 2009. With its mission to engage, inform, and inspire photographers to shoot film, the FPP didn't stop at a podcast, they even opened up their own store. Since 2019, FPP has been releasing a series of B&W Monster films. To date they have: Dracula (64 ISO), Wolfman (100 ISO), Frankenstein (200 ISO), and TODAY they're adding one more. Introducing the Mummy, a 400 ISO B&W panchromatic film.
To make this announcement even more exciting, FPP is offering this film in: 8mm, 16mm (double perf), 35mm, 120, 620, 4x5", AND 8x10" sizes. As an 8x10 shooter, I'm incredibly excited to be a part of this launch and share with you some of my initial test results.

Thanks for helping me out with testing my "new" rapid rectilinear lens! Who knew a lens from 1889 would be used in 2022 with a brand new film stock? Wish we could bring its original manufacturers here to the future to see it too hahah

Hey Mat, thanks for a great video! Thanks especially about being very open about the similarity to other films (the bit about the pre-wash and corner notch). Even if it's "needed" I don't think the film community should take this sort of honesty for granted. For what it's worth, just like many other commenters I love shooting Frankenstein 4x5 (which is in a similar sort of situation) very much. The reciprocity failure is annoying but tbh that's just forcing me to get better with my movements :)

Just ordered my second box of Frankenstein 200, will try Mummy soon (hope B&H starts stocking it, they have the others). Btw, I saw your Mummy 400 8x10 images on Flickr and my jaw dropped. Superb images, seems like another excellent emulsion. Kudos.

Thanks Markus! FPP's monster films are great traditional grain emulsions that make shooting LF still somewhat affordable. I was thrilled to see FPP offer a 400 speed option, and the Mummy has quickly become a favorite. this was great. I just got my first large format camera (4x5 busch pressman D) and i have been out a few times already. this channel has been great for my learing. Long time film shooter but very young in large format.

What a great look this film has to it. I really like the contrast it gives. And so nice that it will be available in 8x10 also. I hope this will become available in Europe at some point, I would like to try it out. Also loved the sample photos you and your friends shot with it.

It's a pretty sweet lineup, the only one I haven't shot any of is Dracula 64. All of this exposure to motion films with Mike and the gang makes me want to try that too!

Years ago I tried to branch out into other 8x10 films and didn't like the results I was getting. With hindsight I'm beginning to think the problem wasn't the film at all ;)

one other point to consider, if you use the Lomograflok back, the mummy 400 is only one stop different to the asa 800 of the instax wide colour films, so not much to compensate when switching between them.

Great video as always. Loved seeing some brass love. A large of amount of my shooting is using Rapid Rectilinear lenses and I love the rendering. Looks like he has a keeper on his hands. I can't wait to give this film a shot.

Ed I thought of you when I first saw Imran's lens because it was so darn clean! With all the chatter about the super fast brass lenses, I was amazed at how well this handled and gave a bit of "swirl".

@@MatMarrash It looked great. I also think it demonstrated a great lesson that lenses do not need to be perfect to net great results. Folks can get a faster RR if they check out mfgs like Voigtlander with their Extra Rapid Euryscope (F6) and Portrait Euryscope (F4.5).

Thanks Mat! Just ordered an 8x10 box of Mummy, so I'm anxious to try it out in my Deardorff. Sheet film's really going up these days so it's great to have lower-priced options. I'm developing in PMK Pyro so I'm thinking of shooting at box speed and developing for similar times as Delta 100. Cheers!

Delta 100 being a t-grained film it may have a slightly different dev time, but a safe bet with Pyro and traditional grain film is to rate that ISO ~ 1 stop slower.

The add-on battery is really what takes it to a 10/10 for me. The new battery life with AAA's is rivaling my old Sekonic meters.

nice video Mat, but also the reason for the blury shots is the QR device inbetween the camera and head, this is tiny in comparison to the size of each parts base/top, why not stick a LARGE arca-swiss plate and the clamp as a large plate, which sinches the qr on the outside of this, aka have the qr clamp larger than the tripod heads' top plate, to give minimun thickness, and also maximum stability, as BOTH front, rear and sides are fully supported by the tripod heads' plate, so no wiggling around as you touch the camera, or the wind does!, Also then you get multiple screws holding the qr clamping plate to the tripod head, via the screw openings, you could fit 4 or 5 screws, which tensions these parts together evenly, so no warping of the base either.

So cool! Thank you for sharing! It's wonderful to see more film being made! I really enjoyed seeing your portraits! Question: what tripods would you advice on getting? I took notes on your video on tripods, specifically the induro ct-414 but couldn't find any even used. I really like your setup with the Q base which I ordered and is on the way. Any other tripods you recommend? I have a speed graphic 4x5 but would love to future proof my tripod in case I get an 8x10. Once again, love your videos and your continuing support to the 📸 community.

Hey Luis thanks for the comment and questions! My go-to recommendation for tripods are Leofoto (same factory as Induro, but less $$$). They're all carbon fiber and incredibly strong for their size.

Hi Anthony, there are a small number of FPP dealers in the UK but unsure how many will be carrying The Mummy 400. FPP can ship but the costs can be $__$

The reciprocity characteristics and the antihalation layer that washes out and the price makes me think Fomapan! I ❤️ Foma so good they have found another sales channel if that really is the origin. (I usually give a presoak to these Foma films to remove the dye. It can still mess up the indicator stop though but no great shakes )

FPP Frankenstein is Foma 200, Wolfman is likely Foma 100 though I am significantly less sure of that. This is almost certainly Foma 400.

Of course it's Foma 400, could it be otherwise ? Also, I find very funny that Matt responded to every comment here but yours, the only one mentioning Foma. It's the Risby EZ400 embargo all other again... Every RU-vidr knew - well I hope they did - but no one dared to tell it to his audience.

@@Thorpal I think short of using actual flags Mat semaphored it pretty clearly and I think it is fair enough to have an NDA on this. My only moan would be that here in Europe it will probably always be much cheaper to buy Foma than the FPP version because of shipping and import duties. In the US I imagine the difference won't be so great. But more power to FPP they are doing great promoting analogue photography and they need to survive. They are also providing a service with the film in that they will support you and answer queries etc. etc. whereas other distributors of Foma are more like box shifters who know little about the actual product. If someone gets into LF using Mummy then finds they can switch to Foma for a few pennies less when they really start ramping it up then that is a win for everyone. My frustration is I can't get FPP Regular 8 movie film cheaper. The film is made in Rochester, flown over my head here in Scotland, to Germany where it is finished by Wittern CineTec (for I assume it is they who do it) then flown back over my head to New Jersey for Mike Raso to imbue it with FPP love and put a sticker on it. I would then have to pay to have it flown back across the Atlantic to Scotland. I guess I'll just have to move to the US! Sorry - long reply.

@@RogerHyam Well, I know you can find Super 8/16mm Foma 100 on Fotoimpex, so with the 400 ISO at least that's something they bring to the film table. Otherwise, it's just marketing and rather deceitful PR. For FPP, the only people they don't fool are film newbies and those who have the wallet big enough to don't care. I don't how, in the long run, they will survive once their target will outgrow them. Because though Foma is more expensive in the US than the EU, FFP's versions are even more. Makes no sense to keep buying this - beside the box. I don't mind supporting initiatives, but FFP, Risby & some other repacking goons are not philantropic. And I've always found doubfull the RU-vidrs that indulged them.

Hey Matt, I have been using Mummy 400 (rated at 200) and developing in pyrocat HD 1:1:100 for 14 min at 70 degrees. My sheets still seem to come out under exposed by about a full stop. I have shot side by sides with Hp5 and the Hp5 is always dead on. Any tricks or adjustments when processing this film with Pyrocat hd? Unfortunatly, I do not see any documentation on the massive dev chart for mummy 400 and pyrocat hd. I should add my exposures are less than 1/4 sec, and bellows ext is not a factor. Thanks

Hey Todd thanks for the feedback! I've noticed that FPP sheet films will need a more aggressive dilution of Pyrocat HD if you're looking for equivalent printing density as Ilford stocks. I'd recommend doing the same processing but with 1.5:1.5:100 or even 2:2:100.

Hey Charlie, I haven't tested the FPP Monster films in any other staining developer than Pyrocat HD, but that might still be a good starting point for testing. Currently using 15 min. @ 20C and rating the film at ISO 200.

I'm intrigued, as I rarely need a 400 speed film, and TMY is getting very expensive, but I don't see development times for Rodinal. Is there a comparable film that I could use the massive dev chart for? Has anyone tested this with Rodinal?

Is it best to only develop in kodak hc110b? Would it effect if developed in d76?

It works great in a wide variety of developers. D76 stock for 7.5 min @ 20C or D76 1+1 for 12 min. @ 20C.

I develop in dilution E, 1 to 47 and like the results. Some slightly longer development times. I don't use D76 for LF because it's more expensive. But I use D76 diluted 1 to 1 exclusively for 35 and 120. Less grain that way.

I'd always wondered why all the development charts for HP5+ and Tri-X were always 200 instead of 400, and then I started working with it more. Funny enough in T-grained films like TMAX 400 it actually gains a bit of speed!

PMK doesn’t work too well with this film at iso200 1:2:100 70f 13min for now, always looks underexposed and contrast is low. Since no data sheet can be found on PMK with it, I should try rodinal and ddx later to see how it goes.

Rodinal worked great with it when stand developing for an hour at 1:100, 68~66f.

The positive of the FPP films is that they tend to be less expensive than popular B&W films. The negative, for me, is that FPP does not reveal sources or identification of the film as branded by its manufacturer. Generally, I figure that if the vendor does not reveal specifics of a film, they have a. reason. Frankly, my time and subject opportunities are too important to waste playing these games with FFP, Lomography, and their fellow travelers.

Sounds great but I’m sure there are a lot of frustrated film photographers out there that simply cannot afford to blow £16.00 for a roll of 24exp monochrome 35mm for example here in the U.K. It’s unrealistic and seems only to benefit well healed photographers.
