Duke Nukem 3D was THE FPS game that broke the "Doom clone" curse for the category (Build engine was a bit more advanced). Released between Doom and Quake on April '96. Maybe it wasn't your time, but huge, huge miss.
@jordanfreman4954
@jordanfreman4954 2 года назад
Actually, Doom clones curse go on, half-Life actually killed the curse and newblood resurrected it
@guysplace5385
@guysplace5385 2 года назад
@@jordanfreman4954 No, Duke was the first for sure. No one looked at it and thought 'Doom clone', it was powerful on its own. Since Half Life is 3D and Quake and Quake 2 were already around, it's not the same thing. Oh, and yeah,the curse ended. No games 'felt' like half-assed Doom games, and FPS became a category on its own.

I'll never forget getting Sound Blaster speakers for the first time ever back in 91/92. It blew my mind while playing WOLF 3D. I was 7 back then. Great memories.

I remember the first time I saw Doom running on a PC in an electronics store. I stood there for a good 30 minutes and just stared at the monitor. I couldn't believe what I saw because I only had an 8088 PC at home at this time. I remember thinking: This looks like a movie.

Back in a time where you could carry up to 30 weapons, usable items, jump, medkits, large colorful landscapes, fast and frantic gameplay, hidden secrets and play via LAN parties and couch coop with a buddy. Gamma brightness in the video option menue was extremely important for the doom franchise. Having this option turned too high will dramatically affect the game graphics detail. Playing in a dark room with brightness and gamma turned downed in the game; will bring out the best graphic detail. In this video the brightness was turned up way to high giving it a cartoon feel instead of a realistic feel.

Obviously, Doom, Quake, and Wolfenstein 3D had by far the best floor-to-wall and environment-to-enemy contrast, providing the cleanest graphics for best-possible orientation. I'm surprised to not see System shock on here! Came out right after DOOM . Could actually look around, jump, and crouch. You even had to hack doors and terminals to get to certain places. The cyberspace sections are weird but fun.

Kannatti katsoa peli-video. Frist Person 3D. Löytyi joitakin sellaisia dos-pelejä joita ei ole tullut vielä pelattua.

you mentioned realms of the haunting but didnt put it in your list! Up there in my greatest games of all time list - compare it to the others from 1996 in your list for storytelling, depth and atmosphere. I just checked and it came out on the 31st December 1996....so it counts :P

Good old days :'( Doom, Ultimate Doom, Doom 2 was good, but love Heretic and Hexen more. Quake 1 was also cool. :) ID Software made a great job at those days. ;-)

Descent (1994) and Descent 2 (1996) should definitely be mentioned... they beat all other 3D games from those years (except maybe Quake) - real 3D (including 3D models), 6 degrees of freedom, very complex levels, _great_ music and sound...
@jl.7739
@jl.7739 6 лет назад
SilentJohn Late reply I know ;) descent would technically be a “vehicle” shooter? But terminator future shock hat similar specs and was released in 12.31.1995. Maybe the first “real” 3D FPS

most raved about descent, but i couldn't play it, the floating, spinning, 'which way is down?' feel made me feel sick.

Where's Descent (1995), Duke Nukem 3D (1996), System Shock (1994), and Marathon (1994) ? those are all games that were pretty big back in the day. I don't think witchaven was big back then, but im glad you included that. Definately deserves more recognition.
