Welcome back, or thanks for dropping by! So we have a 1950's-1970's FPU bench vise. This really is a fantastic vise. One of the smoothest vises I have ever used. The price tag on one of these ranges from $75-$200 (obviously used) depending on condition. I paid about $130 for my Yost, and I like it. However, there is NO comparison between the Yost and the FPU. They are in totally different leagues. The Yost is a good functional vise. The FPU is also a good functional vise that's more substantial, more precise...more expensive feeling....hence, the title to this video.
The image of Doug DeMuro makes a cameo in this video to give a Doug Score...( please don't sue me Doug....Buddy!) Not sure who he is? Love cars, or just great RU-vid content? Check out his channel here. www.google.com...
And most importantly....Thanks For Watching!
What stuff do I use?
Large Handle Material
5/8th Hot Rolled Steel.amzn.to/3uWwNc1
Shaft collar.amzn.to/3x5IrDg
Degreaser.
Zep Industrial Degreaser. Personally, I buy mine from Lowes for about 10 bucks. But you can check it out on Amazon if your curious

Paint.
Rust-oleum Hammered Paint. (silver) amzn.to/3ttRuvA
Sanding.
Dura Gold Premium. Wet or Dry, Variety Pack Sandpaper.150-3000 grit. If you want to try a mirror finish the variety pack is a nice way to buy all the sandpaper you need with one click. Note: these are half sheets, not full sized. amzn.to/32kK8yI
Miady Sandpaper Variety Pack.Wet or Dry.120-3000. This is more economical than Dura- Gold. You get more sheets at a lower cost, and its still pretty good. amzn.to/32mIYCL
Sanding Drums for Dremel.432 pcs. These do not compare in quality to Dremel brand sanding drums. But over 400 pcs for under $20. amzn.to/3soWbFW
Bristle Disk. These have recently become an essential part of my tool kit. I don't have a favorite brand, however, these are the ones I'm currently using. amzn.to/2QaXiMf
Buffing Kit
Purui Buffing Kit. I love this kit...period. I feel it transformed my Harbor Freight buffer. The Harbor freight buffer is great. The buffing wheels it comes with I don't care for. amzn.to/2Q9zNmN
And the rest.
Painters Pyramids.amzn.to/2OXG58z
Loctite 242. amzn.to/32kN8Ll
Lucas Red and Tacky. amzn.to/32mPM3l

Acetone. This is the Amazon link. amzn.to/3uXcNGj But, buy this at your local big box store for about 8 bucks.
Mini Files. Those come from Harbor Freight for about 3 bucks. Here is the Amazon link for the same thing. amzn.to/2Q9XhIt ...but these are pricey in comparison to buying them from Harbor Freight.

This is a middle tier skill level for a restoration channel, probably on the better half of the tier. But the cringe levels of workmanship aren't up to the 98% cringless viewing that my mechanics has, as even he cuts corners. My background is in aviation repair so if an overhaul isn't done to the degree of how it should have left the factory, it's cringy. My mechanics has issues with finishing the parts. Kilo has issues with finishing parts, to a lesser degree, and has issues with quality of replacement parts. It's no dig at kilo as there are very few channels that are better, but he hasn't broken out to the levels of my mechanics

Let just be clear this is one of the better restorations channels for the fact that he can take someone that is pretty much worthless or desgined to be damaged and turn it in to some art. The fact that he spent that much time fixing the logo is truly awesome. One of these days I might get around to doing something like this just for " because I can " reasons

I'm new to your channel, I am not dissapointed with what I see. Seeing the amount of care and respect you give these items you work on, down to the bolt, is just breathtaking. Literally the type of Restoration channel I was actually looking for, who uses the old parts and tries the most to repair rather than other restoration channels who just purchase new parts and replace those. I mean that's not restoration . Good luck 🤞

I've watched this just again now (only twice in total). There are so many of these sorts of channels now. My Mechanics is obviously the big daddy, but yours is my favourite to date. I enjoy that you restore them not to original condition, but well beyond the point of functionality to be oversized man-shed jewellery. The mirror finishes. Not shiny finishes. Not extremely well polished, but mirror finishes. Totally impractical for a working tool, but who cares. Chip Foose cars aren't daily drivers; they're automotive artistic statements. I mean, just look at those jaws when you're done with them! I love the colour of this finish too. In short, in case you can't tell, I think this is superb!

Downside is; once metal starts bending, even if you straighten it, it weakens the structure and becomes easier to bend again.

I didn't quite understand why the OEM didn't use hardened steel for the handle. They had to know that someone would eventually use a cheater bar on the handle.

Awesome, you really do go to town on these restorations projects. BTW I once applied grease to the conical face on the swivel base, never again, these faces should be clean, you need friction to lock to swivel... But I guess you're trying to prevent rust, on a ornamental vice.
