I had planned a relaxing afternoon - exploring a new area for future long range flights with my 7 inch bird. The first two flights went well, up to 5 km out and rocksolid 40 Mbps at the turning points with my setup.
This video shows the third flight, which almost ended in disaster.
Fortunately, I could reap the fruit of my efforts to get GPS-rescue work on my Chimera.
There are several videos on my channel like this one : • Chimera 7 - GPSrescue ...
I´ve learned my lesson from this flight - may be this video is helpful for other pilots as well.
Gear of this flight :
Chimera 7 HD bnf (DJI Air Unit)
Motors : XING 2806.5 - 1.300 kV
Props : HQprop 7x4.5x3
8.000 mAh 6S2P Li-Ion from Farin Frames (Italy)
DJI radio with TrueRC X-Air II antenna
DJI Goggles V2 with 3-turn death ray helicals
Footage : recorded by DJI Air Unit in 1080p / 60 fps plus Goggles DVR
Please subscribe to my channel if you like my content. This gives me plenty of energy to deliver more stuff 🎥.
Happy flying and always safe return 😎✊

Thanks for your comment, mate 👍. Yes, I was very surprised that I first lost radio and did not lose video. But I got the payback for all my work with GPSrescue before I sent it on long range (there is a video on my channel where I show how I solved the problems which I had with rescue in the beginning with my 7inch). Please test your quad before you send it far away - it’s worth it, bro 😎🤜🤛

Thanks so much my friend, such a comment from you means a lot for me 🤙🫶🙏!! I'm always happy when I can provide some content with value for the fpv community. Yeah, this flight brought me close to a heart attack - but I survived 😂. It was another lesson for me - an unknown area where I sat comfortable in a chair under some huge trees and didn't expect such a problem. On the way to the ridge I drifted too far left and didn´t look back to liftoff point - when I climbed the last meters close to the peak I lost line of sight because these trees were between me and the quad. Luckily rescue worked (I know that I have a 10% failure rate in rescue mode with this quad 🫣) and I got my big bird back. Is long range on your project list too ? It´s so addictive ... 😉. Take care and best greetings to your family 🤝and wonderful Cornwall 😍✊

@@bugsy742 thanks my friend for your words, you’re absolutely right with all what you say 👍. Fortunately I had no break in the video feed (black screen) and so I could hope that the quad returns. And despite my heart beat rate of 200 💓 I kicked in the right switch on my radio (rescue). One year ago I used the wrong switch - I disarmed 🤦‍♂️ and the big bird crashed 💥. Lesson learned. The noise of a 7‘‘ is a valid point - the challenge is to find an area where you don’t bother anybody. I have the same issue. The failsafe happens right when you turn around and are facing 90 degrees while out past 3kms. If you read Oscar Liang's page titled: "How to Mount/Position Transmitter and Receiver Antenna on FPV Drone" there's a diagram showing why this happens. The range is cut in half when the antenna is at 90 degrees. To fix, I believe we'll need two antennas with one facing 90 degrees off to one side of the quad to cover both angles.
@themoggidriver
@themoggidriver 10 месяцев назад
Hi mate, thanks for stopping by and for your comment. Highly appreciated 👍. I have another Chimera 7 Pro where I installed Crossfire diversity to avoid the problem which Oscar Liang explained in his article. The two antennas are mounted on two arms in 90 degrees angle and the signal is always rocksolid. Before that I had a single Crossfire antenna and therefore the problem which you described happened at the turning points. The quad in this video is my older Chimera 7 with DJI link (bnf), no Crossfire, no ELRS. I‘ve been out 6 km with this quad and at the turning point I had still 40 Mbps Bitrate (due to my antenna setup on goggles and radio). On this flight I lost signal during turning and ascending because I sat under a huge tree and so I lost line of sight. My fault … (another) lesson learned. Flying long range is so demanding and so addictive … best greetings (to Vancouver ?), MOG 😎👋👋

Thanks for watching and for your comment, mate 👍. I have another 7.5‘‘ bird (Chimera 7 Pro) with Crossfire diversity but have not yet been so far out (6 km air line distance) with this bird like with the 7‘‘ with DJI radio. I have strong confidence in the DJI link, when I made the turn at 6 km I had rocksolid 40 Mbps. In this flight here it was clearly my fault (pilot error), sitting under a row of trees with huge tree tops and then losing line of sight when I approached the peak. I‘m sure, my 7.5‘‘ would have kicked in RESCUE as well in this situation but I will not try it 😂. Unfortunately the efficiency of the 7 Pro is worse than the efficiency of the old „7“. I‘m still excited to find out with which bird I can fly further away … I‘m sure the limit is the battery and not the radio … Take care my friend 😁🤝

This really piqued my interest; thank you for this video. I woke up early this morning because I was troubled by what happens when a drone loses signal. I was curious if the drone starts to ascend immediately upon signal loss. I searched the internet, but I couldn't find any information on it until now.... So, it seems to me that the drone did indeed start to ascend when it lost signal. Did I see that correctly? If not, that's a significant issue if the drone is just slightly behind one of the mountain peaks and begins its return without ascending. I'm also curious about why you activated "rescue" at 4:52.
@themoggidriver
@themoggidriver 9 месяцев назад
Hi buddy, GPSrescue is a science but it‘s absolutely necessary to test it before you send your quad on real long range. You never know what happens - you can pass a radio tower and get signal interference and when rescue isn‘t setup right it‘s all over … All what you have to do is : do the setup in Betaflight. Watch tutorials from JB, he explains in detail what to do. I followed his advice step by step. When the quad loses signal, the FC kicks in „rescue mode“. The quad turns quickly in the direction to homepoint. Then the quad ascends. In my case it ascends 40 m with a speed of 4.5 m/s. Then the FC starts the return flight and is trying to keep the altitude. I kicked in „rescue“ at my radio to ensure, that the quad keeps „rescue mode“ and flies back. Otherwise it’s possible that the FC kicks rescue out again (when signal was recovered) and then you must be very cool to take over the quad again. Don’t forget that normally you are in a sort of „panic mode“ when you lose signal so far away from homepoint. At 4:52 the signal (Mbps) was very strong again and I kicked out „rescue“ at my radio and took over control to fly the quad back. This was my 4th case losing signal on a LR flight and I think I made everything allright - therefore I made this video. I‘m happy when it helps, bro ✊✊ Thanks for watching and for your questions !
@Wild__FPV
@Wild__FPV 9 месяцев назад
Thanks, man, this is some crucial info for me! If it doesn't start climbing after losing signal, that'd be pretty hilarious, right? Sorry, but I'm not quite getting what the issue would be if the FC kicks the rescue mode out again? I guess I'll figure all this stuff out in the field, in real action. At that point, I'll probably know more, but I might still hit you up with questions like this. Hope I'm not bugging you, but I love having all the deets before taking flight, and it looks like you're a real whiz with drones. Plus, it might help someone else reading this :)@@themoggidriver

Hi, thanks for watching and for your question 👍. During the rescue flight everything is done by the flightcontroller. No action needed by the pilot when everything works like set up in Betaflight. 😅😉

@themoggidriver 6 месяцев назад
Hi mate, thanks for watching and for your questions! This Chimera 7 is my oldes one (I have three 7'' quads) and it was delivered in December 2021. It runs on BF 4.2.4 and I never changed this version because it seems to be bug-free. The GPS module is for sure an old one, not the m10. My newest quad, the Chimera 7 Pro V2 (the analog version !) has the m10 GPS. But that´s another thing, I´m still not happy with Rescue on this new analog quad. Needs some work ! I put a lot of testing and effort in my first Chimera 7 to get Rescue working - you can find more videos on my channel concerning Rescue with this quad. Finally, after deactivation of the barometer function in Betaflight Rescue worked reliable in 9 from 10 cases and so I could send this quad on real long range (maximum distance so far 6 km one way). The GPSrescue settings are no rocket science - I followed completely the tutorial from Joshua Bardwell -> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--bYavyTRvx8.htmlsi=5H0RuSK7aXrqSYcT I don't mind to share my settings with you - I can send screenshots. Hi Mate, thanks for watching and for your question. First of all : congrats to your new bird ! Great purchase, phantastic choice 👍. To get GPS(rescue) work (I think you ask for rescue and not for the sensor) you can find tons of videos on YT. The video which was best for me to set up GPSrescue was this one from JB : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-B_Yl0wqRf68.htmlsi=CiUb5ga6XeLMRIoq I followed this video step by step (he explains all necessary settings in Betaflight and a lot more) and then GPSrescue worked. Please follow JB and you will get it working. And then : test it ! Fly away 500 m, kick-in rescue at your radio and check if it works like programmed in Betaflight. When it works properly 5 times in a row then you can send your bird on long range. All the best ✊ and let me know if you face problems. I‘ll try to help. Best greetings 😎👋 and happy flying 🤙

Hi mate 👋. Here comes another tip. Check my attached video link. In the beginning, my Chimera had problems to calculate altitude correctly. This caused problems on the return flight after activation of GPSrescue. I solved this problem by deactivating the barometer function in Betaflight. Please check, if your quad uses the barometer. You can check easy if your quad calculates altitude correct. Take a look at the altitude value in OSD before liftoff. Altitude should be the correct value according to your location. When you arm the motors, this value for altitude should change to zero „0“. If not, you have a problem. And please do always check that your GPS locked enough satellites when you are at a new location. GPS always starts with the number of satellites from the last location and it takes some time to find the new satellites. VTX power should be reduced during the search for the new satellites. Here is my video 👉 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-40iM4b-08-0.htmlsi=AoEjJ2q9YeOsBcVY

Thanks for your comment, mate. Long range efficiency is absolutely ok. No prop wash at light freestyle. During rescue flight, the quad fights with the heavy 8.000 mAh pack to keep the altitude. Doesn’t sound perfect but I don’t do any changes because it works reliable. Accuracy of altitude according to the number of locked satellites is another topic … Barometer is disabled because it made only problems. Thanks for watching, mate ✊
