Testing my DJI Phantom 2 with a GoPro 3, filming part of the rail yard of Helsingborg, Sweden. The quadrocopter is equipped with an FPV system (first person view), allowing me to see on the ground what the camera is filming.
I didn't manage to include the entire rail yard, due to the video signal starting to break up (I was standing behind a building, that effectively blocked the signal), so I had to turn back.
In the end there's an Öresundståg going towards Copenhagen.
The quadrocopter itself was quite stable in the air, despite the gusts of wind coming in at times. But the image became wobbly, which was a disappointment. Still, I'm quite new at this and will try again. It's a fascinating hobby!

Good show Mr. K. I'm delighted with the resolution of your videos, especially these aerial views. I bet this is the first high quality, low altitude, video ever for this rail yard. Regards and thanks much.

At around 0:51, a couple of meters to the right of that large tree, perhaps you can see something black on the ground. That's me, sitting on the ground, looking at the monitor and controlling the quad. :)

Nice work Jan. I wish i could persuade my company we need to buy a Phantom to help us with site surveys; perhaps I should show them your video!

Jag tycker att du fick med så mycket av bangården ändå och det är en fin video du har gjort.

Very nice! Thanks for sharing. I was thinking about this idea also, since it provides an excellent view over rail :) It seems like there is some strange wave effect in the image indeed (I think that is what you mean with 'wobbly'). Did you find out what caused this? Mayby some passive image stabilisation in the GoPro, or the vibration of the quadcopter? It's not always too present though. Do you use a gimbal head to mount the GoPro?
@jankiwi

Yes, I use a gimbal, a DJI Zenmuse H3-3D, which is what is recommended by DJI themselves. Other users have reported the same effect (sometimes called "the jello effect"), and it seems it's due to the vibration from the quadcopter being picked up by the GoPro. One solution is to attach an ND filter to the GoPro, thus making the shutter speed slower - and thereby reducing the effect. But an ND filter would set of the delicate balance of the gimbal. Some even suggest it would burn out the gimbal in the long run. Oh well, I will see what I can do. Thank you for your comment!

Jan Kivisaar Thanks for your reply. Must be the vibrations of the quadcopter cause by the interference of the 4 rotors spinning at various speeds indeed, since the effect changes during the video. (probably because the rotors speeds vary during the flight). This ND option would indeed reduce the effect (a bit), but it would also add some motion blur. (that is actually the solution here....) Since the gimbal will be off balance, that is not too good a solution after all. Do you have image stabilisation ON on your GoPro? Maybe, turning it off will have any effect... We probably have to wait for a gopro with optical image stabilisation. (sensor shift OR lens) instead of 'electronic' stabilisation. That should reduce the effect, since the stabilizer should counterbalance for the shake of the quadcopter. I'm not sure if this can help, but maybe there is a possibility to add some type of foam between the gopro and the gimbal, that should reduce the high frequency shake caused by the 4 rotors a bit. Maybe some 'Rubber band'?

PS, there seems to be a: DJI Phantom GoPro Anti Vibration Anti-Jello Vibration Isolator Low Profile Carbon Fiber Mount. There are a lot of revies etc. on Amazon, so you can check if that suits you.

Peter Montfrooij The GoPro doesn't have any image stabilization at all, either optical or via software. And unfortunately, since the jello effect is affecting the image so randomly, no image stabilization software on my computer (even After Effects) can do much about it. I made another test today. I switched to a different pair of dampeners (the ones distancing the gimbal from the quad body) and widened the hole in the quad, through which the gimbal is sticking up (a strange design, I must say). I have noticed before that the gimbal very easily gets into contact with the quad body, but thought that DJI must have thought of that when they designed the whole thing. Maybe not. Because the test today gave me a very stable picture. Couldn't see any wobbling at all! But the sun was setting and I was therefore getting a slower shutter speed, so I can't say that I've found the solution - yet. Next test tomorrow in broad daylight. :) Thank you for your suggestions, btw! I appreciate it.

Did you manage to reduce the jello effect with the new dampers with higher shutterspeed? The idea of aerial footage from (f.e.) a train yard attracts me, but the Jello effect bothers me too much to even consider investing € 1000,- of equipment.

Wow! Any more plans for filming Swedish godsbangårds?
@jankiwi
@jankiwi 10 лет назад
Yes, there are plans for filming the rail yards of Malmö (quite big), Trelleborg, Kristianstad, Hässleholm and Halmstad. Those are the easiest ones for me to get to. But I first have to better my technique to get rid of that shaky picture - and then find the time to actually film them. ;)
