🇳🇱🌷 In my country The Netherlands we have the Veulencentrale, which plain translates as the Fowl Central. It’s an organisation where you can register an orphaned fowl or a mare that’s lost her fowl. Immediately after registering (via a simple phone call) the search for a perfect match starts. It’s very effective, because in a matter of hours (or even quicker if they live close to each other) the introduction of fowl and foster mum takes place. If the match fails, there are other mares or fowls to choose from.

That was a great kindness by the owner of Sajee, to bring her there immediately, no questions asked, and help give Brûlée a chance at life with a new Mum. True, the mare was also suffering the loss of her colt, and it helped her too. It is still a huge ask, to borrow a valuable mare for people you don’t know, and keep her at their farm for the lengthy time it takes to rear and teach a colt until it can make a go of it on its own. He is a very compassionate man to do this. The two horses look so amazing together, clearly the bond has formed and is a strong healthy one. Brûlée is simply gorgeous, and will be a very handsome stallion one day. Sajee is stunning, and what a great disposition to go with her beauty and configuration.🖤🇨🇦

At the same time, that mare could have become seriously depressed (I've seen it in sheep who've lost their lambs, and can only imagine what it looks like in horses!), contracted mastitis, etc... Giving her an orphaned foal to raise solved her potential problems, too! It's a win-win.
@angartsnirex
@angartsnirex Год назад
The owner must've felt the mare's devastation as well. That's y they let them borrow her. They must felt so relieved after knowing a foal needs a mew mom. It's a win-win situation 💜

@@CantonDem13 Yes, it worked out well for both horses, and it could have been so tragic. Sometimes Nature, and caring people find a way, just when things are looking terribly bleak. Wonderful that you were able to find him a new mom who accepted him as her own. Same thing happened a couple of years ago (Friesian Horses channel) Dutch warmblood foal lost his mom shortly after birth, and Friesian mare Uniek lost her foal. He was introduced to her and she immediately accepted him. Now Rising Star is a beautiful, healthy young stud enjoying life with two Friesian buddies his age. I never forget that beautiful happy dance Uniek did when Yvonne was bringing Rising Star into the barn. Yes, the horse owners have to be very careful when trying to arrange an adoption between a mare and foal. If she rejects the foal, she might kick it and injure the foal. I watch a Sheep Channel, Sandi Brock from Canada. I have seen mother sheep reject their own sometimes. They beat up the lambs. Can cause injuries. Sandi then has to take them away and put on the artificial bottle feeder. Sandi tries to get some lambs to foster who need a mom. Sometimes, it works. Sometimes, it doesn't. I have been watching Sandi's channel for over 2 years also--Sheepisly Me. Have a Blessed Day and Evening!

Back in the 1970s, My sister and I and our parents bottle raised an orphaned foal. The mare was a grade mare, We had just bought the mare as a rescue. Didn’t know she was in foal. Mare foaled and we arrived to find the foal being protected by one of the geldings. The mare totally rejected the foal, attacked the foal, and even with sedation, she wouldn’t allow the foal to nurse. We managed to hand milk the mare for colostrum and then raised the foal on bottled milk. Kept the foal in a stall we created in the basement. The foal did great, but it was an exhausting time for all of us humans!

When I was a teen, I bottle fed many calves who lost moms or weren't accepted. Is bottle feeding not used with colts or foals? Or is there no comparable substitution? I am glad you were able to help Sadji and Brulee', because they needed each other. They are beautiful. And those suckling sounds were so sweet, music to the ears.

You can raise a foal on bottle feeding if you must, it's just the least desireable option. It's very labour intensive, has added health risks, as well as the foal being stressed from being alone, and having no one to teach it how to be a horse which is always gonna carry the risk of behavioral problems. All in all, it's possible but 100% a nurse mare is a much better, healthier option.

@@Thysillia, thank you for the explanation. Yes, I recognize a adoptive mare would always be better than bottle feeding. I only asked due to feeding not being mentioned. The video sounded, to me, at least, like his outcome would be fatal if no mare was found. And that may have been, in huge part, on the time without colostrum and its benefits. But again, that brought up why weren't they bottle feeding until and if they could find a adoptive mare. Thanks again.

@@ADayInLisasLife3947 Bottle babies can turn out to be real trouble. Foals need a herd to calm them & teach acceptable social behaviour. Without other horses to teach them, they act much more impulsively. Honestly, a lot of different animals that are hand-reared can turn out weird- obviously there’s cases where intervention is needed, but a lot of the time with horses it’s just “foal cute, must touch!”

Bottle foals develop boundary issues and will horseplay with humans like they would with other horses which is dangerous.

We've all seen horrendous cases of humans having a baby & not caring for it, not feeding the baby, not changing them, no love...but animals do it automatically, so what excuses do the people who don't tend to their baby's needs?

One easy trick that could make a potential foster situation a little easier would be to freeze every mare's placenta. If anything goes wrong you've got the scent right there for her to attach to. Just preserve the placenta whenever a foal is born, just in case.

This is the most laid back owner of the new foal. Has she not already called around? She just seems so uninvolved. Maybe she's just giving Chris his time to explain? When the two horses bonded though the owner showed so much more emotion than I'd expected of her. I can see now that before Chris arrived she'd been in the depths of despair. THANK YOU, CHrIS.

It's staged for the show. And with a lot of editing. The kind of nonchalant of the owner of the mare makes you feel both owners knew each other or of each other and they knew about their ranch and their experience. Usually the ranch/cattle communities are small by region. Pretty much everyone knows at least the name of your land.
