String bands were involved in the mummers parade since 1901. They evolved through the years, being influenced by marching bands, drum and bugle corps, and broadway shows. One hundred years ago string bands were comprised mostly of banjos. They had a few saxophones to bring out the melody. Through the years they evolved into saxophone ensembles, having sometimes 40 or more saxophones. No brass is allowed in this competition. String bands cover music of many styles from many cultures. They take pride in their music arrangements that transition seamlessly from song to song.
