The glove reveal gets all the glory, and it's a fantastic way to end things, but the Captain saying "We know what you thought, Mr. Kingston" is what cinches it for me. The reveal that he was never actually working behind Columbo's back, but playing into his hands instead.

Love whenever there's a "killer tries to get Columbo taken off the case" plotline. None of them can imagine that another well-connected criminal has tried the same thing before! I bet Columbo's superiors are pretty bored of that trick. And of course Columbo, via Falk, plays the hapless flop perfectly. "Aw gee, they took me off da case..."

The interesting thing is had Columbo not been so thorough, Kingston could STILL have got away with it - or at least, used what few defenses he had to buy himself a bit more time. Columbo gradually pares away his remaining counter-arguments until he has nothing left. It's like watching an amazing game of chess - Columbo carefully removes anything he could use, then the reveal of the gloves is the checkmate.

I love the format of the Columbo mysteries. In most mysteries, we have 5-6 suspects and we don't which one of them did it until the very end. We're as much in the dark as the detective is. In a "Columbo" episode, we know who the killer is right from the start of the episode. We know how he did it and we know how he covered his tracks. We (the audience) have all the information that Columbo lacks and the fun is watching him try to figure it out.

The takedowns were legendary but even more so because how both episodes the killers were particularly snobby and looked down on, mocked and laughed at Columbo more than any of the others and Columbo seemed to have an extra sense of joy being smug while showboating his epic skills in the take downs. Made it all the sweeter

rich cuadra If they were to show this to the kids over in America these days? They would be screaming "Look we were right, it's nothing but white privileged rich folk flaunting off their wealthy paintings & he was gonna frame her for it & that's how women are kept down by men & we are gonna continue to blame our problems on the white rich folk in Colombo films" 😂 It's nothing but rich, white, racist, misogynist, homophobic bla bla bla. This would be like kryptonite to them. It's their nightmare staring back at them. It's sad but it's true. Love the Colombo films by the way. Got the box set as a present & haven't watched any of them in awhile. Hooked on watching the bits n pieces on this channel.

This is absolutely one of the best and most clever endings! While watching this one, I was thinking during the scene of Columbo napping in Kingston's apartment, why did he take the chance to wake him up knowing that he had the stolen paintings in his carrying case? Just go back to the car and put them in the trunk. But he was dumb for even giving Columbo the keys to his apartment in the first place.
