This is a collection of moments from my trip to New York City.
I had visited the Big Apple nearly 10 years ago and already made a video with the OG BMPCC so I wanted to do sightly different this time.
Being able to film Open Gate in 3:2 with the BMCC6K was a great experience and suited New York perfectly.
I love the frames I was able to get and I hope you will too!
I always try to put the emphasis on composition instead of movement and focused on the quiet moments with a touch of minimalism.
This was also a trip with my mum so I only filmed a few minutes each day across the 5 days. In total I shot 54mins of footage.
All shot handheld.
6K BRAW Open Gate, in 24 or 36 fps.

I've been to New York City once, enduring city. Right around the midpoint of the pandemic. I captured my brief moment in that city using my BMPCC 4K. I'm amazed by this full frames image quality and of course, your cinematography. Please keep our eyes hungry for more.

Hey Flo, i am not gonna write how good this footage is - because it is fckng beautiful 😅 But i really curious- don’t you cheating us😂 I am Talking about Handheld. Never ever i will get so smooth tilt, pan or even just normal straight Handheld even with my strap and even with OS Lens. (bmpcc4k) It kinda stays shaky anyway. And if i ad warp stab in Premiere - it getting just worse. Yeah i know, sometimes OS Lens must be off, because it works from lens to lens differently. WithoutOS - micro-jitter coming in. Those shots from you - from bottom to top rotating at the same time - they are impossible 😮 I can imagine that you stabilizing it with gyro Data in DaVinci (still have no experience with it) Would you touch on it in your next video, maybe also with bts. Short davinci tutorial would be phenomenal 😊 Thanks a lot

Hey, thanks so much!! I was trying my best to be stable and I did stabilise a lot of shots in FCPX too :). I also have been shooting that way for years so I know how to move and not move with that setup if that makes sense haha! I will mention in the breakdown yes :)

Beautiful images of my beloved city.. home. NY. I love that you didn't go crazy doing super transitions and effects... you let us digest the beauty. it is actually your style, which I appreciate very much. Most creators (at lest in the realm of social media of course...), are so desperate to put so much craziness with effects, and non sense that the subject per se gets lost in the "noise" of it all. Watching always your work I believe this is you signature style. I love it. Great work mate!

stunning mate! I've never been there but this made me feel like I was there, more so than many other videos of NY I've seen. I think you're subtle and nuanced approach to composition creates that sense of just being there and witnessing things as they unfold in those quiet moments amongst hustle and bustle. All handheld? Some shots look like tripod - zero movement...

Noticed a bit of moiré during the tilt up at 1:08. On the building just to the right of the empire state. How often do you see this when shooting with the BMCC6k?

I never noticed a problem before and I think it is a combination of the buildings, grading and youtube compression. The footage on my iPhone was a lot worse in the same spots for example.

@@OfTwoLands Gotcha. Yeah it very well could be the youtube compression. I should have also mentioned in my comment that this footage looks fantastic! Really love the color, composition as well as the moments that you captured. As a New Yorker, you really captured the essence. Idk if you live locally but I can feel a familiarity in the footage. Which is a feat for a local, let alone a visitor. Well done!

I just can't fathom how people are able to exist in such big cities. It'd be unbearable(( as to this piercingly clear video, this camera is supposed to have an antia-liasing low-pass filter but is it moire at 0:42 on the left side of the tallest tower that I see?🤨

Thanks very much mate!! Yes I could see sone funky effects and patterns on some shots with lines or cables but it was the same and worse on my phone in the exact same spots so I think it is just the nature of that kind of straight lines with digital cameras.

What lens did you use brother? Sigma? I’m using the Meike cinema glass with my 6K and URSA and finding it difficult to get sharpness out of. Even at 2.1 it’s very soft.

Very rarely does a video longer than two minutes of the same kind of thing keep me intrigued and watching but I sat through the whole video and loved each frame and movement of the camera. YESSS I've been waiting for this since you told me you were going to NYC!!! Edit: just finished. As a New Yorker, it's amazing how you've made NYC seem calm and still. Like you've almost managed to strip the hectic, loud, and craziness of New York and just let us appreciate the beauty of the city. The video is like a reminder for me to slow down and appreciate my environment -- to not get too caught up with making the next meeting or meetup. And as always, masterfully shot and edited. I feel that open gate should be way forward for movies. Anamorphic was good back in the day when movies were just for cinemas. But these days movies stay on in digital library far more longer than cinema. And watching anamorphic on 16x9 is such a terrible experience, your screen is being filled black bars top and bottom, wasting the pixels which many people would have paid big money to get such displays. Whereas open gate, the vertical bars are usually less distracting . I’m glad Zack Snyder considered open gate for his cut of justice league. It did give the sense of superheroes being majestic and this has been true for many movies shot for IMAX, even though distracting that some scenes become taller mid action . I was just watching this video over my iPad, and iPad screens are better suited for open gate content and it looked so amazing to see the video being filled most part of the screen

Beautifully composed and compiled, a real treat. I've shot and uploaded a few test reels from the BMCC 6K FF and I'm curious about two things. One is your feeling about exposure (ETTR?), and the other is about noise reduction/removal. I've closely studied the black areas of your shots and they look to be practically noise free, I'd be very interested as to what noise reduction method you use, and if it's the built in NR in Resolve, what your preferred settings are. I did see your comment in this section with regards a follow up background video and wonder if you could perhaps include an insight into the question of NR with this camera. Your initial videos with this camera were very helpful in deciding whether to add it to my collection. I'm not disappointed as some appear to be but the BMCC 6K FF does have it's challenges especially in relation to exposure and noise, so your thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks again.

Really nice work! I picked a bmcc full frame and love it. What battery solution are you using? I've had some oveheating problems as the result of the battery I've been using and would love to know what's working for you!

Thanks!! Been using the internal ones for travels and outdoors content and the core swx battery pack I use with my bmpccs for longer shoots :).

I recently invested in a Vmount Battery and small rig belt clip, have never run out of battery since. maybe for client projects though not so much travel lol

There are no words to describe this video. It is so beautiful I couldn't stop watching it. I live a few blocks away from where most of the footage was taken and it took my breath away. Thanks for reminding me what a great decision I took 6 years ago when I moved here.

This is beautifully shot and the edit is very tasteful and well executed! My girlfriend and I were in NYC the 2nd week of November and it was just a magical time, it looks like this footage may have been captured around that time because that is what it looked like there.

Magnifique. Sur ce type de voyage, tu n'as pas envie d'être moins chargé qu'avec une BMPCC? Je suis passé sur un Lumix S5ii pour cela.

Merci beaucoup!! Et non, j'ai toujours pris mes BMPCC pour tout type de voyage. Avoir cette qualite dans quelque chose de relativement compact comme cela est tres important pour moi :). Je shoot dans cable, moniteur ou battery pack. Juste la cam et un objectif.
