France declares state of emergency in New Caledonia following deadly riots

France declared a state of emergency in New Caledonia on Wednesday after lawmakers in Paris voted in favour of a bill allowing French residents who have lived in the territory to vote in provincial elections, prompting deadly riots in the region.
Government spokesperson Prisca Thevenot said the declaration, which will come into force at 8 p.m., was “precisely to bring back calm and serenity.”
The unrest in New Caledonia resulted in the deaths of three young Indigenous Kanak, according to one official.
Supporters of New Caledonia’s independence fear the move allowing residents to vote in provincial elections will dilute the vote of Indigenous Kanak.

How are we going to get Europe back to the way it was? I grew up enjoying Canada and now when I want to move to Europe where I'm from... Now it's a mess there. So disappointing. It may take longer than my lifetime to get things normal... if not, then Europe as we knew it will be lost forever, all because of some rich people who somehow know everything better than anyone else.

You see colonization comes from the word colony and a colony is a tribe a pride or a group of any living organisms living together to make things work. That's what colonization is. Do not I repeat. @@Le.soleil Personally I don't believe that elections matter. The powers that be will fudge the votes and install their legislation and puppets whether we vote or not. Allowing us to vote gives us the illusion of choice and power. It's nothing more than an illusion meant to pacify us while the powers that be slowly encircle and enslave us. Both the left and right believe there is top-down corruption at the highest level of office. In 2016 the left thought the election was stolen. In 2020 the right believe the election was stolen. We can't vote our way out of top-down corruption.

I'm sorry but after 10 years those French citizens are New Caledonia citizens as well, it's now their home, they have every right to vote in provincial elections. And the local people have absolutely no right to declare independence unless they make up the vast majority of the people on the Island, which they do not. If they can't live in peace under French democracy then they are going to be violent and murderous no matter what government is in charge. Could you imagine what they would do to the French that live there if they ever did get "independence". Sounds like warmongering to me. Put these riots down and then move on. God bless the Police officers that have to deal with this mess.

I'm sorry but,the indigenous inhabitants of the island, the Kanaks, have been marginalized and oppressed for many years, and their struggle for self-determination is legitimate. And the fact that today the Kanaks are no longer the majority in Kanaky, sorry I meant in New Caledonia, is something horrible for them.
