In the World Cup, France reached the semi-finals for the first time since 2006, defeating Uruguay thanks to a terrible mistake by goalkeeper Fernando Muslera. Uruguay was unable to resume play without injured striker Edinson Cavani, as well as due to Muslera's bad day. Rafael Varane scored in the first half after a precise cross from Antoine Griezmann. In the second half, Griezmann scored a shot that Muslera failed to save. Uruguay continued to attack, but failed to convert their chances into goals. France secured a place in the semi-finals, where they will meet their neighbours from Belgium. The match was effective but not too flashy, with Didier Deschamps, the French coach, receiving criticism from some French pundits for his conservative tactics, but in this match he received praise for his team's performance. Uruguay was unable to do enough to stop France and was knocked out of the tournament.
