My Mum had passed away a few weeks before this. I watched this game with my Dad, at home. We jumped for joy and hugged each other when that drop goal went over. The first time we had smiled in a long time. Sport really can be great. Thanks for the upload 👍
Rugby finally started Getting decent TV coverage here in the US a few years ago, and this was one of the first games I could put on my calendar to sit down and watch. One of the greatest sports moments I have ever seen. I love what it means to you and your dad!
It was an absolutely epic effort and that huge drop goal at the end. I think I had £10 on Ireland . What a way to win though. I was round at my mum's house and she came in be because I'm going, "IRELAND, IRELAND!!" And I support Scotland but Ireland after. I like their style.
The balls on Johnny to go for that kick to Earlsy with the clock in the red. No better man to field the kick either. Nearly 5 years on, my heart still races watching this
As a french, this drop goal was devastating, but it was a great game and a big finish. 41 phases without any mistakes, the great Sexton assuming his statue has a legendary player, the french defense... When I'm watching it now, I smile because it is a beautiful rugby moment and a beautiful win for Ireland. Respect for you Irish people, hope we'll face each other in the RWC 🇫🇷🫶🇮🇪
I was at the match in Paris - it was of the most extraordinary sporting events I've ever witnessed - the tension was unbearable - the French crowd were singing Allez Les Bleus thinking victory was theirs - Ireland were not giving up as they went through phase after phase knowing one error and it was all over - it seemed to go on for an eternity - then that one opportunity finally arrived for Sexton to launch a long range drop goal effort - up high in the air it went and the whole crowd held its breath - it was heading for goal and finally dropped over the cross bar with inches to spare - the ecstatic reaction from the Irish fans in the stadium was an absolute outpouring of joy - The French fans were stunned into silence - What an epic finish and Ireland would go onto win the Grand Slam beating England at Twickers on St Patrick's Day in the snow - Brilliant memories all round.
With all the options open to Sexton, he went for that drop goal, it was a do or die moment, the courage it took to even attempt such a kick knowing if you missed you lost the game. This is why Sexton will always be remembered, and in 2022 he is looking better than ever after overseeing a series win in New Zealand
@@Walshy94 That doesn't make any sense. No matter how good their defense, no one can defend a 10 meter pass direct backwards that was then drop kicked from a ruck. Come on now...
We didn’t deserve it in 2021. We did in 2018. We should have had this game won before the drop goal. It was a brilliant performance, probably our best in Paris since 2000
I was at this game sitting with the Irish fans. Place went ballistic for about 3 mins after he made it. Best rugby game I’ve ever witnessed live by far
This is amazing. Not that anyone is missing just quite how amazing but, to put it in context, it's 41 phases and the 80:00 siren goes JUST as they get to 20 phases. 99% of teams would've been panicking at 25 phases, but the bloody stubborn heroes from Ireland get to 41 and they're like "ok, we're ready to win now."
I don't usually bet but I put £20 on Ireland on that match. I always like to see Ireland, they play a fast, good game and Johnny putting over that long drop goal after so many evolutions was rugby history. They worked until boom. Fantastic. I got £120 out of that kick so thank you Ireland but I nearly had a heart attack while you got there.
If anybody is wondering why the Irish are doing so well at the moment just look how many of that team are in France. Ireland's continuity is exceptional.
The punt at 3:49 on the video but 80:29 in the match still makes my heart stop, but the collection by Earles makes my hair stand on end. This play feels like 6 hours rather than 6 minutes
RIP Eddie, a great rugby man, impartial and fair! Incredible passage of play by two great teams and refereed by the best man ever to do the job Nigel Owens!
One thing that really irks me about this is Eddie Butler's 'Ireland have stolen the game' line at the end. No. Ireland would have stolen it with a soft penalty after a few phases. Ireland won this game with skill and stamina - they didn't steal anything.
The moment that drop goal was scored is something that will stay with me forever. I was at a pub with a few mates and I can remember clearly how the whole pub cheered it was magical. I still suffer anxiety every time I watch this though, always expecting a knock on. For me personally it shows why rugby is the greatest sport and the 6 nations is one of the greatest sports competitions in the world
@@gruffyddrimmington8945 yea 🤣 if tbat last kick didnt happen then france wouldve won, and had france had scored that penalty they couldve wom by 4 points, id say jreland stole this victory in the last play of the game
Makes up for croke park 2007 that did.. My dinner went up in the air.. I knew from that moment we would win the slam..i was at the 2007 game where France scored last play of the game
Not quite in the same fashion as this, but kudos to Scotland for "Ireland'ing" France in the 6 Nations, with a last minute try. Funnily enough, France did the same to Wales, but thanks to Scotland, Wales have beaten France to #1.
It wasn't a steal, you can't steal a win if the game isn't over. Stealing something means it must be owned and france didn't own the win because the game wasn't over.
Come on ireland we can beat any one any where any time to my god why not no body can challenge ue open invitation to anyone from the hole world we are irish
Brian Moore is a disgrace...”sport is rarely fair” his partisan commentary is shameful...his first reaction should be, to recognise the brilliance of over 40 phases of error free rugby, capped off by one of the best drop goals you’ll see in terrible conditions...but no..we get treated to his usual anti Irish tirade....for shame BBC.
Really disturbing to see these people so close together in the crowd and acting so irresponsibly. How many people died after this? Thank GOD we will never go back to this diease superspreader events. Stay home, wear at least 2 masks, only go on essential journeys. Stay safe, let's protect our lives and the lives of granny and grandad. Wash your hands.
@@paulderrico6153 right wing conspiracy theory nuttter in the house. Are you really suggesting we go back to these huge superspreader events that inevitably lead to huge cases/ICU entries/ deaths and even more lockdowns?? Are you seriously suggesting this?
41 phases , this is the problem with Ireland . They were shown up in the World Cup for what they were .Beaten by Japan and gangraped by New Zealand . Ireland beat NZ in an end of season meaningless friendly and thought they were world beaters . If they ever want to get past the quarter finals of a World Cup , they will have to drop the arrogance
