Band on film! Endearing 30s melody sung by New York cabaret singer Frances Day. Backed by Carroll Gibbons and the impeccable Savoy Hotel Orpheans. Former leader Harold Jacobs on clarinet and sax also stars.
Song composed by Dyrenforth-Rose-Gibbons in 1931
Day's career began when she was spotted dancing at Texas Guinans speak in New York. Then off to London and became a rising blonde nightclub cabaret singer. She toured the provinces in 1930 and made her London stage debut at the Hippodrome in 1932 in "Out of the Bottle". Same year she appeared in this rare short with the Savoy Hotel Orpheans. She also made films and records for HMV Victor. One with Al Bowly from 1933 is here: • Video
(real name Frances Victoria Schenck) (b. December 16, 1908, East Orange, New Jersey, USA -- d. April, 1984, Windsor, UK) American actress and singer who achieved great popularity in the UK in the 1930s.
This is an audio restoration project. The sound of the 16mm film has deteriorated with word dropouts in the vocal.and uneven balance. I digitally restored it to improve its fidelity. Enjoy.

Her facial expressions - all those years ago - are so lovable.

The band is silky smooth. Frances Day is an angel. I really love the art deco set with the sunrise theme. 1932 was a bad year for the depression and music like this cheered people up. I'm humming this tune all day now.

So well said and expressed....there really ought to a Frances Day fan club....Carrol Gibbons Orchestra too! But there were so many of superbly excellent band groups then...Geraldo and others....But here, as you say so well « the silky smooth » opening bars of Carrol Gibbons...Wow! more please!

@@dennisroyhall121I’m currently diving into Carroll Gibbons’ work, and it’s amazing what he did with the Savoy Hotel Orpheans! I’m a much-too-young fan of the british and american dance bands of the 30’s, so your fan club has another member, haha

The film maker who filmed this was very good at their job too - it could have been filmed from one position and shown the whole band at a distance but instead we see individual member’s faces and the expression on the faces of Jacobs and Gibbons as they are sung to by Frances Day. We are watching a short interlude of upper-class entertainment as if we were there at the time. Interesting little aspects of the scene are shown - somehow it is a very satisfying as well as an interesting watch of a few minutes all those years ago.

Great song and great version. Sweet sound of Carroll Gibbons and the Savoy Orpheans and Frances does this well. But as always, Al Bowlly does it better than anyone else. Thank for uploading.

Brilliant number. You can hear the percussion really pronounced on this recording, almost more modern sounding that is not heard much on the 78rpm issues. This is lovely

This music, and the players are priceless. A real treasure from the past; the song floats along easily, you listen , and feel better for it. I love Francis Day's upward eyeball roll at 1:51, when she is singing about being there 110 [% ? ] for her love. Thanks for posting such rare footage. I'm hoping one day that something might be posted with the beautiful Anne Lenner singing live on film: another National treasure who made a huge contribution at the time with crisp pronunciation and flawless delivery. Carroll Gibbons made a very good choice with her.

Wonderful! I happened upon this by accident- Yes I noted that upward eyeball roll- I suspect I may know what she is trying to convey when she does that. What a sweet, beautiful woman she was. I was born many years after the making of such -but it doesn't stop me yearning for times like this.

Myriaddsystems It was a crazy lazy time. I'm not quite sure about exactly when, but later Carroll Gibbons , and the Savoy Hotel Orpheans, were the "crème de la crème " of London entertainment scene . Carroll , also as a lovely chap, by all accounts, created music that was an enormous boost during the onslaught of WW2 . I remember him very much. His musical numbers had a wonderful uplifting flow and ease, that cradled a lot of people in those hard times of war .Ann Lennar, also was also a wonderful singer, chosen by Carroll Gibbons himself, with that orchestra. The music that Carroll Gibbons produced was his life's work as an Anglophile , and and American who loved mother England in those sad times.

Carroll Gibbons was still only co-leader of the Orpheans at this stage. The orchestra was under the joint direction of Howard Jacobs and Carroll Gibbons until around May 1932. No reason for Jacobs to be angry about anything.

@ 2reeler @ pax41 Hey guys, I just bought a bunch of old sheet music circa 1920-1935 and written on 40+ in pencil is the name Frances Day , Fanny Day, and just Fanny. This store had a huge box full of various titles for $1 ea.Still have dozens, send me a PM or email & I'll give store info BTW I barely scratched the surface and didn't even get to the other box she referred me to look through. This was in Canton Ohio. I went there to buy a nice/wrkng Wurlitzer electric piano, model 120 for $25!

I recognized the voice but did some checking to be sure --- and yes, the voice belongs to Jean Harlow. She says those lines in the 1932 movie, "The Redheaded Woman".
