Stately, elegant, and timeless, Geminiani's masterful variations on "La Folia" played to perfection by this remarkable ensemble. The poignant, slow passages make me cry, the changes in tempo stir my soul, and the exuberant fast passages make my heart dance like a happy-go-lucky child.

FRANCESCO GEMINIANI {LUCQUES 1687-1762 DUBLIN} CONCERTO GROSSO "LA FOLLIA" - ONE & GIOVANNI ANTONINI. Magnifique, orchestre grandiose bravo.

Beautiful performance, I had not heard this version of La Follia before. Turns out this is Geminiani's fairly literal arrangement for orchestra of Corelli's version, which is for violin & continuo (usually played with cello or viola da gamba doubling the bass line). The orchestral version has a bigger sound and more drama, in Corelli's original there is more room for individual interpretation and ornamentation, and in places is quieter and more reflective. There is plenty of room for both approaches to a piece I can listen to many times again.

Ann Sobieski In the baroque age, musicians were always standing! So in the philological performances nowadays, the orchestra (or soloists) plays baroque instruments (with animal strings, not metal ones) and standing :)

Geminiani at his best!!! There is no question in my mind that out of all the music written around the beautiful “Folias” theme, these are the most spectacular "Diferencias". And this interpretation by members of the Orquesta Nacional de España definitely has superb Spanish GUSTO, on this most Spanish theme.

Wow! What a wonderful experience! All through the music I was looking mesmerized at the dancing steps of the conductor and first violinist. Even if another conductor opts another modern version of dance it will always be a success because of the popularity of the La Folia. What an enchanting music, leaving sweet memories in our minds for a long time! While my eyes were concentrated exclusively on the dancing duo my both the ears were attuned to the heavenly music. The performance of the dancer - conductor was mute reply to some of the viewers who commented elsewhere comparing conductors as necessary evils! Hope, if they watch this video, they will change their minds!

Geminiani and Antonini have, I feel, captured the wistfulness of this oft inspiring piece of music, the "La Folia." At any rate, it makes me feel wistful rather than "mad" or happy, the way that Dvorak's "From The New World" symphony feels too. I wish the videographer had moved the camera a bit (was he/she texting for 12 minutes?), rather than let the first violinist and Giovanni Antonini be the only "moving" bodies. Fortunately, the music was definitely moving.
