One of the best sports stories and watched the film a few times. Truly inspiring, especially in a time of it being a gentleman's sports and the barriers they both overcome to even be on the course. How anybody could give a thumbs down to this story is bewildering.
So cool to see the two of them on the green together 50 years later. Is there more video anywhere of them reminiscing. Would love to see that. Ouimet, from what I have read, was a wonderful guy and Lowery has an interesting story as well.
I can not believe that I would hope love the game of Golf, has such nasty things to say. If you spend time reading the history, Why would you not be impressed by what this man did? This happened at a time when an underdog was truly an underdog. Something good need to happen and the game started to define itself. If you don't love it, you don't want or care to know the history then don't come back here!!!
I wondered why I like the game... the person in question is my family member..my grandfather gave me a stamp marking the occasion in history....since then all memorabilia has ben lost,... but I can find it any time here. Thank you.
Was Ted Ray really considered one of the two best golfers in the world at that time? I always thought is was "Vardon Taylor and Braid". Ray had won the 1912 British Open but that was his only major at that time. Vardon had won five British Opens and would win a sixth the next year. Taylor won his 5th that year and Braid already had 5. .
No he was not. It may be a little complex. From what I have come to understand is that Taylor and Braid at the time were considered better than both Vardon and Ray. Ray in 1913 might have been considered better than Vardon because he had just won the British Open in 1912 and Vardon had not won for a few years. The article I have posted below does a good job of explaining it. www.golfchannel.com/news/golftalkcentral/remembering-ouimet-why-vardon-and-ray/
Dpal93 The article contradicts itself on one point: it says Vardon had 5 British Open wins,in 1913 then says he had 4 (five is correct: he won his sixth the next year).. I've also read that the top British players only played in the US Open when they had a tour scheduled anyway, much as years later the top American players only played in the British Open when they were in the Ryder Cup. Vardon was the biggest star in golf and Ray was and a top Britisher and thus presumed to be better than the Americans. .
