Francis Planté was France's most important pianist in the nineteenth century, after Chopin. He started his concert life at age seven in Paris, where Chopin was also performing, and so heard him play. By 1850 he had won a First Prize from the Paris Conservatoire. He went on to befriend Rossini, through whom he was introduced to most of the important musical figures of the day, many of whom he got to know and with whom he formed lasting friendships. During the 1860s he duetted with both Saint-Saëns and Liszt, and established himself as the leading French pianist of the day. He was recorded at age 89, rather past his best no doubt, in a single set of specially arranged recording sessions in his own retirement villa over a few days in 1928.
His musical style has its roots in the French tradition of crisp and accurate finesse, a sort of pearly-clean touch and not vast amounts of indulgence in romantic tugging at the rhythms. He was best known for the shorter romantic works in the piano repertoire, but it is a moot point as to how much his own playing resembles that of pianists such as Chopin (when we compare him to performers such as Koczalski, Rosenthal and Pachmann for example, all of whom had attachments to the "authentic" Chopin tradition).
Here Planté plays Chopin's Etude in A minor, op.25 no.11.

His style of playing would be closest thing to how Chopin might have played. This man heard the Maestro himself. What more can I say? BRAVO

One wonders whether Chopin sounded like this. Fascinating.

Thank you for posting this. He emphasizes the left hand melody far more than twentieth century pianists who are more intent on emphasizing the briliance of their right hand finger work Plante puts the music ahead of his own ego..

Santa Claus plays Chopin. Santa Claus' interpretation of the Winterwind Etude is one of the best I think. He really understands Chopin's music and knows how cold a winterwind really is, since he has worked hard every Christmas night. He really is a legend, as a superb pianist and a "Christmas hero". When I close my eyes and listen to his performance, I see dreamy visions of ferocious, merciless winterwind hovering at midnight. Francis Plante, the real Santa Claus, rocks. Merry Christmas!

Plantè fu un pianista che ascolto CHOPIN SUONARE QUESTO BRANO .Se cosi fosse com'è potuta succedere questa metamorfosi interpretativa....nelle interpretazioni moderne _Richter_ è quasi irriconoscibile.

This is the performance of a very old, indeed past it Plante. His piano rolls of 30 years earlier are much more representative.

That was playing from a long gone era. Wish it had never vanished. Too many cookie punched performers today. All we have is pure speed. No soul. No art

@acortot - Musicality often seems an unknown concept or feeling if you like. For ex.: just digit Chopin Etude Op.10 n°1 you'll get so many machine playing soloists... Still some great renditions are there: pure poetry, pure delight. Cheers from Italy.

The fact that Planté heard Chopin play does not mean that his playing is representative of Chopin's style or of the style prevalent in those days.
@user-gu3iy1vl9u
@user-gu3iy1vl9u 7 лет назад
of course not, and nobody said so. however, Plante's phenomenal personality and style are quite representative of the romantic performance practice (if you have ever listened to historical recordings).
@ajaymanoharan5496

BTW, it is not a fact that Plante heard Chopin play. He was born before Chopin died... but there is no record of him meeting the composer or hearing him play!

when this pianist did this recording he was already advanced in age and i think we have to imagine how he did play this etude when younger to have a real idea . The conception of course is very good and interesting. I am sure Chopin did play better than this here.
