As a Brit, one very, very important detail that is rather cavalierly passed over here is that the Royal Navy provided naval protection to the Nationalists as they were ferried across the straits of Gibraltar to Algercias. The battleship Queen Elizabeth amongst other vessels prevented the Republican navy from interdicting this movement of troops, and this had a direct effect on the course of the war. Furthermore, both the UK and the USA (and France, actually) provided material support to the Nationalists at different points in the war. The Civil War is often painted as fascists versus communists, when in reality, it was fascists and conservative democrats vs liberal democrats and communists vs anarchists. Everybody had skin in the game, and the Allied powers decided that a communist Spain was worse than a Fascist Spain - this was at the same time as British ministers were describing Hitler as a 'bulwark against communism', and British intelligence was feeding information to the Germans about the Soviet intervention in Spain. Like practically every war in the 20th Century, every side was guilty of some iniquity, and best practice was not what was right, but what was expedient.

I have recently started educating myself on the Spanish civil war. Are you saying here that not only the Nazi's and Mussolini's fascists supported Franco's African troops to land at Algecirus (from Morocco) but also the Royal Navy ? Might this be why Franco never moved on Gibraltar ?

Definitions of "Iniquity"change over the years, and meanings vary among people.
@rmcewan10
@rmcewan10 3 года назад
@@tomfrazier1103 ironically, it’s one of the few words that hasn’t changed its meaning in rather a long time - since it’s appearance in Latin as ‘iniquitas’ (where in fairness, it had the more specific meaning of injustice rather than malfeasance more generally), it has always had effectively the same connotations. I don’t know that no semantic change in 2000 years can be described as “changing its meaning regularly”.

The negative aspects of his legacy are till excoriated by the Left, because he won, and made Spain a functional anti-Communist state in the postwar years. Whenever a "Side" wins in a Civil War, resentments linger, just look at the U.S. The Left seeks to politicize everything, and Spain was free to be non-political for a while.

You forgot one tiny important detail about Franco's victory in the Spanish Civil War: it wouldn't have been possible without the reluctant help of Professor António de Oliveira Salazar. You should do a video on him next ;) (fun facts: - While an admirer of Mussolini, Professor Salazar was a devout Catholic and loathed Hitler's policies which is why, among other things, he refused to join WWII (he played both sides masterfully and managed to keep the Empire neutral and growing while Europe was being destroyed) - despite ruling as an authoritarian dictator for 36 years and being vilified by modern day Portuguese politicians, in 2007 the Portuguese elected him "The Greatest Portuguese of All Time" in a national television poll. - Rowling conscientiously borrowed his surname to one of the founders of Hogwarts: Salazar Slytherin)

Actually, Franco's first choice for the future King was Otto von Habsburg, which would have restored the House of Habsburg to the Spanish throne after more than two and a half centuries (the last Habsburg king of Spain, Carlos II, having died in 1700). A documentary here in Spain explained how Franco insisted on having a medical operation performed in his palace, not the hospital. He insisted and pulled rank and had an operating theatre set up at his home. During the operation there was a power cut, not uncommon apparently, which left the medical team in the dark leading to Franco's demise.Had he been operated on in hospital there would have been a power backup. thats a blatant lie, both Salazar and Franco were avid anti-communists and anti-left, thats literally it, there were never any other orders given to supress something other than the threat of communist uprising, Franco literally fought agaisnt them and Portugal got lucky and managed to avoid civil war and proceeded to prevent the slight chance of that happening, every single order given for dispersion was directed at the threat of communist radical partizans and guerrillas that was present at the time and still is to this day in the iberian peninsula, the only difference is that the communists and the radical left eventually came to power through subversive means after both Salazar and Franco left. Keep your falsehoods for yourself please, and now for some actual facts, My grandfather was a radical communist in the 50´s and 60´s here in Portugal, even he, said that Salazar wasnt a dictator and a fascist, he simply persecuted communism and radical leftisms cuz that was the greatest threat to europe at the time and because every one saw what happened to every single country that became communist, not to mention that most people who actually lived here were in favor of both Salazar and Franco given that Portugal and Spain are traditionally conservative christian countries and only through the globalization of europe have things tilted towards other values.
