Francisco de Goya, born in 1746 in Fuendetodos, Spain, is considered one of the most influential artists of Romanticism and a precursor of modern painting. His work spans a wide range of styles and themes, from portraits of royalty and nobility to haunting scenes of war and fantasy.
Goya began his career as an apprentice painter in Zaragoza and quickly gained recognition for his talent. His ability to capture the essence of his subjects led him to become a court painter for King Charles IV. During this period, Goya created some of his most iconic portraits, characterized by their attention to detail and penetrating realism.
However, Goya's life was marked by tragedy and illness. In 1793, an illness left him deaf, which profoundly affected his perspective on the world. This transformation was reflected in his work, which became darker and more expressive. The Black Paintings, a series of murals he created in the Quinta del Sordo, his residence, are examples of this somber stage of his life.
Throughout his career, Goya also witnessed the horrors of war, which inspired him to create works such as The Disasters of War, a series of engravings depicting brutality and human suffering.
Francisco de Goya died in 1828, leaving a lasting legacy in the art world. His ability to reflect both the light and shadow of the human condition continues to inspire generations of artists.
