Absolutely Stunning ! No other dramatic Tenor in history has ever attempted this Aria, including Corelli and Delmonaco,so i guess Bonisolli stands alone as King of the Dramatic Tenors. This piece is strickly for a Lyric Tenor i was in awe that Bonisolli attemted it and blew away all his fellow tenors in the process. MOLTO BRAVISSIMO BONISOLLI.

Tamagno, a dramatic tenor, and the creator of "Otello", sang the role of Arnoldo. Gedda , a lirico-leggiero, did it in French, but Bonisolli like Corelli were lirico-spintos not dramatic like Del Monaco. I've seen them all and was in the chorus of Wm. Tell when Bonisolli sang Arnoldo. His middle tended to be muddy, but the high notes were huge and brilliant. Del Monaco's voice was frightenly big all over (which defines the voice ; not the timbre) and he could make the sweetest of pianissimi when he wanted to. Tucker was a spinto, by the way,. which means he could do most lyric and dramatic roles. N.B. The two Francos died on the same day.

Actually Tamagno sang the role. Then Filippeschi a spinto, then Gedda (inappropriate) a lirico leggiero. He had a beautiful top, but that's not enough. Bonisolli had a thunderous top. I was there ! Del Monaco's range for the role which includes a high d flat was too short.

Here he was already 52 years old and at that time singing Otello, Chenier, Calaf. So it is a great tribute to his glorious voice that he was capable of singing bel-canto at that stage of his life and career

Rossini wrote this part for a tenor with more hepth and dramatic qualities then his other tenor roles. Verdi wrote both Othello and Fenton and I am certain he never thought that one singer could combined thoose parts!

Bonisolli was highly underrated during his lifetime. No way he was inferior to Pavarotti or Domingo. Althoug his antics made him a difficult person for the maestros to work with (sword incident with Karjan, High C's in your face agains critics, etc)

@ThomasCBooth Perhaps his energy and commitment was too much for them. Perhaps he did not kiss up to the "right" people. Perhaps he was too good to be true... but he was good and he was true, and he will always stand up as a standard for the best qualities in human musical performance.

I'm sure Domingo and even Carreras would never dared to include this aria in a concert. They always went with easier stuff like Nessun Dorma and Recondita Armonia.
@johnswadley9899
@johnswadley9899 11 лет назад
Well, he was committed, that is for sure. I will never forget the way he threw himself over the cannon in Forza del Destino just sobbing his heart out. It was a lot of voice and he sounded better than many others, I will name Merighi and the Canadian chap Mauro, who might have been better singers, but less voice. If he was pazzo, it was good pazzo! Let there be tenors like Corelli and Bonisolli, but good period voices too, Florez is probably much closer to Rossini!
@fabrizzzio48

@ThomasCBooth Mr. Booth, you're quite a gentleman. It is my inference that some envious Italian opera people pasted on him a most undeserved nickname. It seems it's about time that opera fans, critics, historians everywhere eradicate this vicious practice, which tells of the character, not of Mr. Bonisolli, but on those who applied to him the term.

Agree... I do not why people make a direct relation between Mozart and Rossini with tiny white and "heady" voices.

Tecnica e stile decisamente incongrui. Daje Francone!!
@Jeff4014
@Jeff4014 4 года назад

@@renatobonisolli6039 Come vuole lei.

To solve this subject we may see the source where we can read(and know who wrote it and why)how must sound or do a singer depending on what composer will sing. So far always in any score Puccini, bellini, verdi, donizetti, mozart, rossini)I only can read: Otello: Tenor; Almaviva: Tenor; Nemorino: Tenor, Ferrando; Tenor. Never Tenore dramatico, spinto, leggero.I belive art must not to be ruled by rigid laws. I recognize difference between "bad taste" and "singing out of the style" (subjective).

Fisichella’s version at the same concert is nowhere near as good as bonisolli’s. Bonisolli sings more phrases in one breath, connects better too, more legato

you said Bonisolli is singing this like a Verdi aria. Why? I just can think in:Because he sings to loud and dark sound and lack of style. Which are the rules for a Rossini style? I do not know. May be Juan Diego Florez will have more difficult to performe roles like Manrico, Radames. But many singers on the past that sang these roles, could sang rossini and mozar roles. If I must say that Juan Diego is a point of reference for how a rossini tenor must sound and have, I do not agree with that.

There´s a famous tenor who sings Verdi,Bellini,Donizetti like singing Rossini How he sounds then? without color, a machine gun of high notes that a cup of saliva have more taste. I do prefer a voice not in the style but with soul. Rossini and Mozart are not exclusivity of tenors with "angelical" (called Mozartian tenors) voices in the head,hiding behind music (style) their lack of technique. Good technique is not just reach hig notes! Heil to voices from the earth! Bravo Bonisolli!

WHy not to have Rossini tenors with a "male sound".WHere was writted that Mozart and Rossini tenors must have an androgin sound between castratti and angels? Look at youtube for Sergey Romanovsky siging Almaviva (I´ll pay to him $400), he sounds like a man, not like a singer. For me Florez is not a rossinian tenor. Is a tenor. I do not wknow why he do not sings other kind of repertory (his duke of mantua is nice). I hardly belive that you will listen to him trough an orchestra in Siegmund! ;)
