***** A good question! The way it was explained to me is that the "house wire" was the intercom that went from the stage to all parts of the backstage so that the performers knew at what point in the performance it was. Almost every opera house had/has one. A brave and clever person would attach "alligator clips" to tap into the wire and make a recording. The stage microphone at the Met must have been in or near the prompter's box, as his voice can usually be heard.

You needed Franco’s voice to do that!!

Melhor intérprete desta ária é Giuseppe Di Stefano. Nem Gigle dá o Casamento orquestra e cantor como Di Stefano nesta ária de Amilcare Ponchielli.

Carlo Bergonzi cantaba maravillosamente esta aria.

Orquestra e Coro da Academia Santa Cecília de Roma. Também a melhor Lá Boehme é com Maria Callas, Di Stefano, e outros grandes nomes.Idem o Rigoletto com a Callas e Tito Gobbi e a Regência do Grande Túlio Serafim. Também a melhor Manon Lescaut é com Callas e Di Stefano. Adoro a Cavalleria Rusticana com Vários Elencos. Mas a com Jussi Bjorling e a Tebaldi é insuperável. No Trovador, Ernani e Força do Destino o Del Mônaco é insuperável. Idem no Otello. Adoro a gravação da Aída com o Gigle no papel de Radamés. A Gioconda Assisti em 69 no Municipal de São Paulo. Grande elenco com Gianni Raimondi, Gian Giacomo Guelfi, Marta Rosa, Helena Suliottis. Espetacular Cenário e Guarda Roupa. Também Assisti Del Mônaco no Otello. O prefeito em São Paulo era o Pianista Paulo Maluf e o Governador Abreu Sodré.

I saw him only once in Don Carlo @ the Met and it was EXCITING! … he made his entrance and the audience went NUTS - and he hadn't even sung a note! … and when he did it was one helluva huge sound .. a tad self-indulgent musically, but OMG what a sound! … never to be forgotten ….

Di tenori bravi ce ne sono stati tanti...ma CORELLI quale tenore spinto a mio modesto avviso è stato il più grande. Come il Di Stefano degli anni 40/50 una voce d angelo..Devo ammettere che ogni volta che ascolto Jussi BYORLING mi sbalordisce...che dire chi ama la lirica non può che ammirare questi magnifici interpreti.....

100% d'accordo con te caro Guido. Grande dei grandi fu Franco Corelli!!!! (ma tutti gli altri sonni bravisime tenore...Björling, Di Stefano,etc...).Grazie per gli tue parole!!!

@@guidogreco341 , Corelli, Pippo, Del Monaco ad aexequo, non e' facile scegliere. Li ho ascoltati tutti e tre dal vivo...era tutta una meraviglia, voce, slancio e passione. Bjorling non era cosi.

Well, at least the prompter is quieter here than in the “Ah! lève -toi, soleil!” I posted. I laugh every time I hear: Prompter: "L'amour!" FC: "L'amour!" Prompter: "L'amour!" FC: "L'amour!"

I have never needed anyone to prompt me for L'amour! :-)

He is my favorite tenor! It's amazing to consider that his voice was thought to be "ugly" and that he had no high notes in the beginning - then after some training he was able to sing them, only to lose them for months and then regain them a second time. After that he never lost those thrilling high notes.

Caro Francesco giolla hai detto bene, oltre ad essere bello, alto con due gambe chilometriche, quello che mi viene da dire è che la sua voce e' stata un evoluzione, dall'inizio con incertezze vocali perché no, un timbro frutto di studio, studio e scelte, mai contento di sé stesso, cantava nonostante gli applausi, si chiedeva ancora se quella recita o romanza fosse all'altezza o se c'era ancora da migliorare, corelli aveva fascino, bellezza e un timbro finalmente in grado di essere forte ma allo stesso tempo dolce e gentile con acuti e smorzoni o suoni filati al momento giusto. Oggi i tenori mi dispiace dirlo dovrebbero copiare, copiare e copiare lo stile e sopratutto il senso di cosa si va ' a cantare

Unfortunately, my copy of the tape ends just before The Dance of the Hours. Also, the prompter interrupts the singing quite often with loud "Chorus on stage" and "last call" directions. It's a miracle to have this.

Every opera house at that time (I don't know whether they still do) used a prompter for all singers for every line they sang. It was not an individual choice.

nape jack Lanza has overtones and something I don’t have words for in the voice he was born with. Corelli has control.

Mario Lanza n'a rien à faire dans ces comparaisons. Il est très loin des plus grands.
