This is from a 1972 Aida, later in his career. In subsequent performances in this run he executed the diminuendo perfectly. He would, for the final years of his career, abandon the diminuendo, though.
1972???? go listen to KRAUS, LOFORESE AND BONISOLLI! THOSE ARE GREAT TENORS WHO NEVER LOWERED DOWN A KEY LIKE CORELLI DID! HE WOULD SING LA DONNA è MOBILE IN B FLAT! B FLAT!!! in 1970!! when he was still young! Kraus, loforese and bonisolli sang in the original key all the arias! until their death for more than 30 years after 1970 when corelli was finished!
I will say I’d rather listen to slightly older Corelli sing things transposed down than listen to older Kraus sing in his nose. Younger Kraus though was truly lovely. As for transposing down, even Caruso would do this frequently. Back in that period of singing, they would rather sing a lower key with full chest participation than sing the original key without full chest participation. Kraus in particular, you can really hear that as he aged, he got into some really really pinched, nasally singing. Can’t speak as much for Bonisolli. As great as he is, his voice, at least from recordings, has never really grabbed my attention. I should listen more to him though for sure. And yeah Loforese was insane. Also need to listen more to him. I’ve definitely heard more of his voice in his oldest years than I have heard him singing in his prime. But that fact that he could sing in such full chest without any of the weight and tension that can be detrimental if you’re not singing perfectly.. that’s a huge testament to his technique. Should definitely listen to him more.
@@Jeff4014 Why are you screaming. Who cares how Coreli sang la Donna E Mobile the B note was not written in the score. It was not his repertoire. Kraus also did not sing all of the high notes. It is a lie to pretend that Kraus' voice did not age. Why would you want opera houses full of aging singers. Opera singers at least used to retire from singing in prominent opera houses, in the prewar times. Aging singers is a sign of decline, much like aging politicians. You will never sound better than you did in your 30's and 40's.
Yes Joe, it is a crack at the end of the diminuendo. A crack is a crack, but I never heard FC crack on a high note and almost no other tenor does the diminuendo off the last B-Flat in the Celeste Aida. Bergonzi tried it and cracked badly. Corelli claims that he was born with the diminuendo and mezza voce and could not teach it. Enjoy
The sound feels higher (less scuro) than usual - this may be part of the problem. He goes flat throughout. Those who have sung a bit will be indulgent, we are Human after all.
