Correlli in this interview demonstrates his knowledge of the voice,if one looks back at his career with or without much musical knowledge one will see that he seldom went out of a certain repertoire of operas,as many have done,he concentrated on the ones with suited his voice.In my opinion with no musical training this is the error of many operatic stars of today & certainly some of the past,it is not where one sings but of the roles which try to embrace to please the public,impresarios,manager,& recording studios.The fees that are offrered have much to do with this as well.This is one of the reasons why I personally like to listen to his recordings,I also like his renditions of Neapolitan songs( sometimes a little to Operatic also his Holy renditions which have a certain fervour in them.The best we have now is Roberto Alagna,getting on in his career but in the last 25/30 years one of the best . I do not want to mention others,because of personal taste,every person as in food has their preference and are entitled to this.Please do not Critize performers,but enjoy the ones you personally prefer.Enjoy !!!! Due cantanti immensi ma anche due persone straordinarie, intelligenti senza grilli per la testa. Di lirica me ne intendo poco ma so perfettamente riconoscere due gran signori!
Non ricordo se fosse nel 1994 o nel 1995,andai con quella che era all'epoca la mia "agente" Gianna Galli a trovare Corelli nella sua casa di Milano.Da tempo avevo il desiderio di parlare col grandissimo tenore e grazie proprio a Gianna riuscimmo ad avere un appuntamento.Rimanemmo con lui quasi 3 ore e vivo con il ricordo di un uomo dolcissimo e modesto(ma consapevole del suo essere stato un grande).Quello che mi stupì(ma nemmeno del tutto) fu che lui,quando doveva fare un esempio su come doveva essere emesso un determinato suono o una frase,portava SEMPRE ad esempio il Del Monaco dei tempi migliori.Asserì che lui da spettatore non aveva mai sentito nulla del genere prima di Mario,ne' aveva più sentito nulla del genere dopo.Disse che nessuno era riuscito a mantenere la gola larga nel passaggio di registro come Del Monaco(SEMPRE NEGLI ANNI MIGLIORI).Ho lasciato la sua casa con tristezza perchè non sapevo se avrei più avuto la possibilità di rincontrarlo.Grande tenore ed adorabile persona.Ho avuto un gran privilegio.
Si credo abbia detto questo, ma ricordi che tecnicamente Corelli era più rifinito, e nel volume non temeva nessuno... lo disse anche Pavarotti in una intervista, questo non significa che ci fosse rivalità con MDM, erano amici, ma quando arrivò Corelli certo comprese che c'era uno che lo eguagliava ...
Dei tre tenori dell'epoca l'unico che non ho ascoltato dal vivo è stato Di Stefano,ma visto che sto parlando della metà degli anni '70...forse è stato meglio così.Gloria al Di Stefano degli anni d'oro!!!!!

I am not a fan of Domingo at all, but there is no denying his success and popularity. Wunderlich had a most beautiful voice and passed away a few days before his 36th birthday and before his voice reached maturity, which I believe is somewhere in a tenor's mid fortys'
Giuseppe Di Stefano ha avuto una grande natura vocale e una capacità di espressione fuori dal comune, il suo errore è stato quello di spostarsi in un repertorio drammatico non suo. Non aveva una vera e propria tecnica vocale...Corelli anche se non aveva un timbro bello come Di Stefano, è stato sicuramente un maestro di tecnica vocale, vedi il suo maestro lauri-Volpi.
Penso che siano stati i piu' grandi tenori in assoluto a mio modesto parere, in piu e' impensabile dire dei tre chi era il piu' bravo.... erano diversi ma mostruosamente bravi.....

As a God given instrument it was off the charts beautiful. But his technique was not good. He rarely rounded his vowels as he ascended the scale and as time passed this hurt him along with singing the heavier repertoire. But as far as beauty of sound while in his prime he was incredibly beautiful.
Singing wise he was fine , his natural talent gave him room to play there . The problem was off stage , he was an avid smoker for years so bad habbits catch you up.
a mio avviso tecnicamente Corelli era più preparato sia di Del Monaco che di Di Stefano, grazie anche all'insegnamento di Lauri Volpi; ma son stati tutti e tre dei grandi tenori, ognuno con la loro unica caratteristica.
eppure al di là degli acutoni da gigione Corelli era il più imperfetto dei 3..tanto è vero che in tutti gli anni 50 prima che iniziassero gli anni di crisi di Del Monaco e Di Stefano, Corelli era il sostituto di Di Stefano anche nei ruoli più pesanti.
Credo che tu sia male informato ed in quanto alla tecnica, da quello che dici mi pare tu non ne sappia molto. Di Stefano ad un certo punto della sua carriera ha incominciato a perdere gli acuti ma soprattutto la qualità del suono del registro acuto spesso calante, ciò dipendeva da una tecnica imperfetta. Del Monaco pur straordinario per mezzi vocali e temperamento ma spesso in difficoltà, in special modo dopo avere esagerato nella ricerca del suono scuro finalizzato all'Otello, e per quello che può contare il mio parere non ne aveva affatto bisogno, la sua voce era perfetta com'era, chiara e squillante ma con l'accento drammatico del quale era dotata...d'altronde Verdi scelse per la sua opera Tamagno che era chiaro ...ad ogni modo mi trovo d'accordo con Alessandro: erano tre grandi tenori, ognuno con le proprie peculiarità. Vorrei aggiungere ancora una cosa: Per fare giuste valutazioni le voci liriche andrebbero ascoltate dal vivo e possibilmente nello stesso teatro. Ho conosciuto di persona Corelli e Di Stefano ma purtroppo ho potuto ascoltare dal vivo solo Di Stefano ed era già vecchio e nonostante ciò si sentiva il cantante di razza.
andrea vallarelli, Corelli aveva una tecnica strepitosa, specie dopo le lezioni di Lauri Volpi... Di Stefano aveva un timbro benedetto dal cielo ma era poco incline ai sacrifici e affrontò un repertorio per lui pesante, Del Monaco aveva una gran voce ma era, lui sì, un gigione vanesio e la sua respirazion andava bene solo per lui ... Le soprano che cantavano con lui lo attestavano tutte, si disegnava i costumi e li imbottiva per esaltare la sua figura e metteva i tacchi interni nelle scarpe, eppure apprezzo ed ammiro la sua arte. .Erano tre mgnifici tenori ma non facciamo paragoni, ognuno eccelleva nella sua particolare dote canora... Su Corelli però spenderei una parola in più... era una colonna di suono, cantava benissimo, e soprattuto era umile e rispettoso ... Sarebbe auspcabile che nel giudicare i cantanti si applicasse la teoria della conoscenza della tecnica vocale e non la simpatia... riconosco a Del Monaco le sue innegabili qualità, ma come persona onestamente la trovavo abbastanza teatrale anche nella vita privata, era un tenore primadonna !!!
The great Corelli was NOT more prepared than Del Monaco. Corelli was a bundle of nerves and as a result created mannerisms like running ahead of tempos to get to his great high notes, rolling his Rs, excessive portamento where it was not written. He created these mannerisms because he was insecure. Del Monaco was a master of his complicated technique, with impeccable diction, always eager to perform.
Vorrei estendere la mia stima e ammirazione a TUTTI i grandi tenori del '900, forse è stato troppo riduttivo il mio precedente commento... Avrei dovuto dire "fra i più grandi tenori" , del secolo scorso... Sono troppi cento anni, per soli tre nomi , chiedo scusa!!! :-))))
Caruso, Paoli, Lauri Volpi, Cortis, Gigli, Fleta, Martinelli, Masini, Gubelini, Borgatti, Melandri, Crimi, Granda, Merli, Vinay, Pertile, Tagliavini, Schmidt, Wunderlich, Bjorling, ecc Se vuole vado avanti dele ore.... Il punto è che l avvento della TV diede fama e lustro in modo particolare a quelli che si affermavano negli anni 50/60. Prima solo qualche disco e un po' la radio. Anche le grandi multinazionali delle grandi registrazioni più sofisticate, Decca, emi, Deutsche gramophone, Sony ecc, presero piede in quegli anni. Aggiungiamo poi la bellezza/fotogenia/telegenia, che non guastava, senza nulla togliere al loro intrinseco valore artistico-vocale, ed ecco che si ricordano in modo particolare gli artisti (donne incluse) della seconda metà del 900.Cordiali saluti.

io sono italiano ..tu no...io ti dico che corelli aveva una brutta dizione..quella di Di Stefano era perfetta.Corelli aveva gli acuti belli ma il centro non era bello come quello di Di Stefano

Corelli was a spinto dramatic tenor with at least 10 signature roles. He had great facility in his upper register with an extremely warm sound. He also had the ability to do mezza voce and diminuendo. IMO, his Calaf was his best role, but also excelled in Chenier, Ernani Fanciulla Tosca, Trovatore, Aida, Norma, Carmen Forza. He did have some mannerisms that could be annoying. Running ahead of tempos to get to his great high notes, His diction was at times muffled, He used excessive Portamento and rolled his Rs and had a lot of vibrato in his voice which he did correct early in his career. He also suffered from terrible stage fright and nerves which possibly contributed to some of his short comings. He was not a good musician. But his was a fantastic sound and he was a great tenor. A ggiungiamo che Zucker è un orribile personaggio che , col pretesto di intervistare famose soprano del passato, le ha ridicolizzate con le sue domande-tranello (voce di petto ecc...) . Una vera vergogna che solo quei matti di americani possono produrre. Shame, shame!!!
Corelli è un tenore di serie B con gli acuti da tenore di serie A. Penso che non meriti un posto nell'olimpo dei veri artisti del canto inteso non solo come accozzaglia di acuti..i veri unici tenori artisti sono :Caruso, Gigli,Schipa,Del Monaco e Di Stefano

What I have never understood is how a young tenor who had what everyone agreed was one of the most beautiful natural sounds ever heard could not hear and feel that he was wrecking himself. He threw away a very great gift and never seemed to notice. Compare that attitude to Corelli's fanatical perfectionism, which made him stop singing altogether in his early 50's.
Del Monaco stated, perhaps Di Stefano had a dramatic temperament with a lyric voice, which is quite possible. The gradual deterioration comes over a long period of time and perhaps GDS thought that along with his great quality, He could postpone the inevitable for an indefinite period of time. Corelli officially retired in 1976 at around age 55, but his middle register showed signs of deterioration by 1972 where he was taking on lighter roles like Boheme, Don Carlos, Werther, and Romeo to perhaps steady his vocal line. Imo, Corelli was relieved after He retired, knowing that his voice wasn't as great as it once was and also didn't have to face his terrible stage fright that he suffered throughout his career. Corelli's fanatical perfectionism might have been limited to technique, as He did have mannerisms and some shortcomings, running ahead of tempos to get to his great high notes, excessive portamento where it was many times not written in the score, rolling of R's, occasionally swallowing his words in some sloppy phrasing. A great tenor no doubt with a warm intimate quality of voice using mezza voce` and diminuendo, mesmerizing his audience but also having the ability to be thrilling as well, in many verismo roles.
sugarbist I agree about Corelli, having heard him in the early 70’s. And he looked so unhappy on stage. What an irony to be one of the greatest tenors of the 20th century and be more or less miserable the whole time. Many of his colleagues confirm this nervous and morose temperament - something you could never accuse Pippo of having.

@@ransomcoates546 I heard Corelli at the Met in Trovatore circa 1961 standing room. He was very impressive and exciting, bringing down the house. I thought He was more lyric live than on his first L.P. that came out prior to this debut year for him at the Met. His wife Loretta didn't help his stage fright while always critiquing him between acts. IMO, Corelli was a great tenor
sugarbist Nobody who is not deaf doubts that Corelli was a very great singer. It’s just that his post- Met prime lasted only ten years or so, and his foray into the French repertoire was ill-advised. By 1970 the voice was drying up badly.
Every thing corelli says is true- but in de steffano’s prime there is no more beautiful voice - he was a sicilian which gave him an edge in presenting the emotion in his singing. I have never been a big fan of corelli - he was great technically and had a wide open throat but it seemed too rehearsed in a way - but he lasted a long time and put very little strain on his voice

How wrong and stupid is the falsetist interwiewer about Di Stefano technique (and makes Corelli get mistakan about it). Even if you listen Pippo's Calaf with Nillsson or his Radames, you can see how he manages his technique in a great way. Di Stefano together with Caruso, Gigli and Wunderlich are the geatests technicians as tenors !
hector palacio...I completely agree with you...Di Stefano had a perfect supertechnique...he was also wonderful in heavier roles...I think Corelli wanted to please the interviewer (stephan zucker) who is a superficial Corelli fanatic...Zucker will never be able to appreciate other qualities besides high notes ,such as diction,phrasing,capability of recitar cantando..in these aspects Di Stefano is number one and Corelli is a nobody.

Lo ripeto adesso e per le risposte a venire, a lei corelli non piace per antipatia, quindi il giudizio di merito riguarda solo lei ed il suo gusto personale... insomma è pazsiale e non ha la sufficiente seremità di giudizio quindi vale zero ... o almeno uno ... solo lei !!!!
I believe FC ws not dominated, he was more versatile, able of dramatic and lyric/ His timber was the most beatiful, sweet and masculine. di Stefano was in decline after 1962-63, loosing his brilliant top notes, del Monaco was really great, but at times too loud, uncapable of mezzo voce and true diminuendo...
Non mi è mai piaciuto Corelli come tenore. Brutta dizione..fraseggio goffo..troppa smania di ostentare gli acuti...ebbene qui dimostra di essere limitato anche intellettualmente. Di Stefano era molto superiore a lui
