When Frank Bridge wrote Lament for string orchestra in 1915, there was a lot of tension between Germany and Great Britain. The Germans attacked a passenger ship sailing from America to England because they suspected it was carrying ammunition. There were 1100 passengers on board. Among them the Crompton family: father, mother and six children. Composer Bridge was shocked that the entire family lost their lives in this disaster. Thats when he started writing Lament. A composition full of mourning, sadness and a glimpse of anger.
Recorded on December 10, 2016 in Forum am Schlossburg, Ludwigsburg
