Setting aside for a moment Frank Gambale's legendary contributions to picking technique in the form of sweeping, which we will discuss at greater length soon, can we talk about his incredible tone control? I don't know about you, but I can always tell when Frank is playing, sometimes just from the pick attack and articulation alone. Especially on the low strings, those pick harmonics are so juicy and distinctive. Complete tablature for Frank's two epic intro solos, and 100+ technical examples in the Frank Gambale interview:

A man who can shred and keep it all melodic too. It’s a rare skill as many very fast players bore me inside a few seconds. Bravo.

Absolutely! He has technique for days. But I think that even in the slower passages, the playing is absolutely tasteful, and even when he is sweeping it is leading somewhere and it's not gratuitous. As a young guy, i was absolutely into vai, satriani, malmsteen etc but the idea of jazz or fusion was like 'pretentious' music to me. I took lessons for about 3 months at 13 and although I learned a good bit of theory, finger positioning etc. I quit because I was learning nuage but wanted to learn attitude by sepultura etc. I'd heard of all the jazz greats, and some fusion guys like dimeola, holdsworth and mr gambale here, but stuck to my metal and shredders. Holy fuck, as a somewhat older guy I know now I missed out a lot by not pursuing these kinda guys earlier. Frank's playing here touches me in a way that the best metal solo never could. I'm glad my horizons broadened eventually!

This is just beyond the possibility of words of appreciation. It's just outright mastery to a level that you don't even want to achieve it, because it's like, they have it, they do it so well and there's no need for me to come behind and try to top it, he's already done it, just let him have it.

I love you frank for these feelings that move and touch the soul. Music will not only be music for the music if you are able to touch the soul. It is this draft the music makes a message of the musician.in the end it is no longer the amplifier or the guitar, it is the answer to the question, do I have something to say what this world should hear? then it will only be my expression to say something to this person I want to reach! It becomes my music and no other.And then it is your identity on your instrument that is unmistakable ! Thank you for that and your existence in this world !!

Delightful guy. Was at a guitar clinic of his back in the 80's and he was giving away his Live CD. He asked the crowd if anyone knew what the capital of Australia was. Everyone sat there stumped and I'm not usually one of those guys but school paid off and after a long awkward silence and a couple of "Sydney" and "Melbourne" shouts (more silence), then I said, Canberra. He signed my CD and it said , "You lucky...".

On that note, how about a "Chop Builder" style video or seminar, Troy? Frank's "Chop Builder" was pretty cool -- it was a structured practice session that really, well, built the chops. Many years ago my brother lent me a video called "Modes: No More Mystery" by Mr. Gambale. I started watching it and wasn't quite getting it, but decided I could pick it up as the video went along. About 1/2 an hour into it I realized I had no clue what was going on. I had to make a tough decision at the time. I had to decide whether to put in the effort to get up to speed or just be content to be an intermediate player at best. I am happy to say I sucked it up, did the work and felt comfortable calling myself a musician within a couple of years. Probably never get the chance, but I would love to thank him for putting out the video and being smart enough to realize modes were a difficult concept to learn for some people because they were not taught in the context of Modal chord progressions. Also for inspiring me to learn theory. Great player and teacher. Thx.

Frank does claim to have "invented" sweeping with the odd number of notes per string until changing direction thing. He is unbelievably fluid whilst retaining gutsy guitar attack and tones. Great guy too. Nice inclusion Troy!
@troygrady
@troygrady 6 лет назад
Does or does not? In person he's always been pretty forthright that the technique has at some level always been out there in our "guitar consciousness". But as you're alluding, I would say what Frank did was give it structure and rules. The sweeping math of odds and evens, even though it seems obvious in hindsight, is a legit engineering way of thinking about things.
@ivonsmith3095
@ivonsmith3095 6 лет назад
I did mean "DOES": as per back in the late 80's the VHS tape "Sweep Picking & Monster Lick" that he made. His 3 notes per string in major scale modes was a great step forward for myself, even though I dont sweep or use economy picking at all. Im all alternate picking. 3 note per string scales still work wonders! Of course now Im watching your videos Im going to expand my technique into the pick slanting methods. Im not much of a fan of sweeping though Frank does make it sound great. And of course its more efficient. Ill sign up for your courses online and hope to refine my methods and speeds. I followed Mclaughlins & Meolas advice from the 70/80's magazine interviews about alternating, triplets, anchoring the right hand and string skipping/chordal picking.

I don't know who invented sweep picking, but it wasn't Frank Gambale - great player that he is. Alex Murphy claims elsewhere in these comments that Les Paul invented it. I've never noticed Les sweeping but that probably says more about me than Les. I can tell you that Dave Creamer was sweep picking (and known for his intervalic playing) long before I ever heard of Frank Gambale. I know because I studied with Dave back in the mid-late '70's (when a young Joe Satriani was also studying with Dave). Dave never hustled to make it big but was well known in certain circles (played on Miles' On The Corner). Here's an example of Dave's playing, also his composition ('75): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wRXlGcLek3Y.html.

Robert Mayer sweeping per se is just raking. Django did some of it back in the 20’s! But to formulate it to be at its near maximum efficiency that WAS Frank. Besides Frank only got known years after he sorted out his way of playing sweep. In his early 80’s video he referred to how he got frustrated with alternate picking “10 to 15 years before” suggesting he had a handle on it as far back as the 60’s. Certainly no one else seems to have organized and taught it en made as Frank did. And used it almost exclusively in his playing.

Most people can't even be interesting when they sweep and then we have Frank sweeping harmonics. Jeez, man.

Interesting Things that 2. I'm not even sure if he could pull off his furious picking anymore, seems like he lost all interest in it but if he warms up with this stuff I bet he could still be a great example of perfect technique.

I saw him live last year and he could, although it didnt sound like Racer X original tone, it doesn depend on tone how we perceive it too

Interesting Things I saw him live at the beginning of this year but the most recent live footages and stuff don't have any trace of his picking. Well I'm not gonna go into that any deeper so let's just hope troy gets him to do this. Have a nice day :)

I saw him at the Pat Torpey memorial show in LA in May. Although what Paul is writing is more blues and jazz derived now, he crushed his alternate picking game. And for anyone that participates in his online classes...there's no loss of steam or ability. He's just added some more tricks to his bag from other genres. But, he may not have as much interest in doing a "this is how I shred" video simply because he's been there done that. But I'd venture to guess he would because it's fun.

Wow. What a great piece of music! He plays with such emotion and feel and intention, forget the tech, that is just a way for him to get out what he wants to get out, or rather, what he NEEDS to get out.
