What I have read is that he would have been a big part of Cap 3 if they couldn't get Downey to sign on for Civil War. But since they did they wrote him off really quickly.

Crossbones did his purpose in the MCU. He was casted for Winter Soldier and I could be wrong but I don’t think he was never meant to be Crossbones just the SHIELD agent guy.

If they wanted to get more out of Crossbones they could have easily thrown him on Agents of SHIELD Maybe brought him back just to do Falcon and Winter Soldier, or now even make the version who died a skrull and put the real one in a Punisher series

He convinced me he’d be a good punisher In the Purge:Anarchy. I was surprised they cast him as crossbones instead, but I realize mcu and Netflix marvel weren’t really communicating/connected at the time. Bernthal owned the role though too so I’m not complaining!

I think Grillo is an okay actor. He is more TV level in my opinion. He has this late 90’s/late 00’s tough guy quality about him. I think he hasn’t adapted to the modern era action star.

They could've found many ways to continue using characters like Crossbones. People saying he Crossbones served his purpose and he wasn't needed after Civil War, I get that, but they could've wrote anything so he could've still been around. He could've been a foil for Sam and Bucky in Falcon and Winter Soldier and even Captain America 4. It's crazy how much potential these characters, these villains have yet Marvel keeps making them one off villains unless they're the big bad of the next phase or two

He’s an actor. He’s there to play his part according to the script. He can disagree with how his character was utilized, but he shouldn’t be venting about it in interviews. It sounds tacky and like he’s ungrateful for the opportunity that was given.

Marvel has a habit of killing off their best villains too soon. They killed Killmonger and Claw in the same film. Most marvel films have trouble getting one good villain and that movie had two.

it seemed a bit anti climatic for a couple of reasons, coming into this as a cap fan and knowing who Crossbones is I was expecting a bit more and the ending of The winter soldier film certainly teased more, so his death in civil war felt a bit flat and sudden, because I feel like he would have been a good rival in future Captain America projects. But alas we will get to see Frank Grillo in the DC universe , which is great for me.

No offense but nobody was hurt about his character dying or wanting more from him. We may have wanted more of Ultron, Killmonger, Klaw, The Mandarin, Taskmaster, Kingpin, Gorr, or Hela. But not once did I hear anyone wanting more from Crossbones...

I agree. No one cried over the death of crossbones. Grillo is not that compelling of an actor. He plays the same gruff Italian tough guy again and again. He seems to whine a lot about lack of roles he gets. Didn’t he once blame minorities and diversity or something for his lack of presence in Hollywood?

I think his character like all other villains in the MCU got buried under the star power of it's heroes. I think if he was initially sold a 7 picture appearance, then Marvel did him dirty. I hope he wasn't expecting a full overarching backstory because there was no way that was gonna happen. If anything though he should still feel privileged to be considered a possible assassin to Cap cause no one knew if it was gonna follow the comics going into the movie.

Crossbones would've been so much fun in a Thunderbolts team or something like that. Most actors who play Marvel villains tend to be one and done, but he was one of the few who wasn't so its a shame they didn't make more use of him. The villain side of the MCU has always felt pretty small and fleeting, villains show up only to die within a matter of days within the MCU compared to the comics where they rarely get killed, like how many characters are actually in the Raft, we've seen so few live long enough to even be put away in there. Sure Crossbones was technically around for a few months but Cap literally only faced off with him once he was full-on crossbones for maybe five minutes. With a few exceptions the MCU doesn't tend to give many of their heroes arch enemies or their own rogues galleries, which I do hope they lean into with say their future Spider-Man films.

The thing about marvel minor villain is they’re not that important. They focus on main protagonists and main antagonist, while dc comics, no matter how small the villains role are, they’re very much reliable on making appearances and much center of the story as the deuteragonist character. Dc comic usually knows how to handle all characters, while marvel comic only knows how to handle main protagonists and main antagonist.

@@lilbigfan3782 I wouldn't say that's the case with Marvel comics, they've done plenty with secondary villains, countless teams as well as storylines and standalone stories about characters like Crossbones. Masters of Evil, Brotherhood of Mutants, Sinister Six, Frightful Four, Superior Foes, Marvel has done plenty with their villains. DC just have more popular villains, Marvel comics still do plenty with theirs, it's just that the MCU doesn't do much with them, they've never tried to build out that side of the universe. Heck, the Thunderbolts originally were all villains pretending to be heroes, but the MCU has so few of them around that they just made it a hero team for the most part.

Dc comics has a lot of minor characters like jimmy olsen, Vicky vale, perry white, and cat grant. These characters aren’t superheroes, but dc makes their characters as much as important as secondary characters.

Frank Grillo is awesome. I always thought he could be a killer Punisher if Jon Bernthal wasn’t attached tho I do love Jon’s portrayal of the character. Crossbones never seemed like a big bad in the MCU but I would have liked to had seen and learned more about his character’s backstory. Unfortunately Frank’s character falls into the list of marvel characters the MCU mishandled. Hopefully being over at DC will be a fresh start for him in comic book movies.

You could tell even through somewhat limited screen time that Cap and Rumlow where more than just friends before finding out that Crossbones is a Hydra agent. I'll never forget his line to cap in the first act of Civil War: "There you are you son of a b*tch, I've been WAITING FOR YOU!"

Same here. Tho as someone who's blessed with younger look than my actual age it's a great thing to have. Im 37 and people constantly think im in my twenties. When i was around 30 i was once even asked a document for verification when buying alcohol. I then had to explain that im not a teenager. That was cringe. Also looking younger is not just genes. It's the physical shape, clothing, voice etc. And things like smoking, alcohol, drugs and too much sunbathing etc all affect perceived age.

I think he's great as a character actor. But like, this seems weird to me. He did the part. I don't think he was ever meant to be some big character. He did his part. That's it. He's kinda acting like he's owed something. If he had a contract for many many films with a potential of a solo film then fair enough. But that wasn't the case if he died in the universe. I remember that there were some reports at the time, about how Captain America 3 changed into Civil War. Apparently it was supposed to be much more like Winter Soldier, but then they replaced it with a new idea and turned it into Avengers 2.5. I could definitely see Crossbones have a much bigger a role in a "Winter Soldier"-like sequel. That's probably what was originally planned

I used to work for a large global company once. Got disappointed after years working there and left on my own. Though I left the company, I never ever wasted talking any shit about that company. I simply moved on with life. It isn’t up to Grillo where Marvel and the writers choose to move on with the characters. You can only hope they keep you around. But Grillo comes of with these comments as being sour about it all. He could of just said appreciated the role, wish there was more projects for the character but have never gotten the call but have moved on. If Marvel ever calls again we see what happen then. But he comes across different in the comments, and it isn’t the first time for these comments by him.

We don't know what happened behind the scenes with his character. Maybe there were bigger plans for that had Grillo in excited - only oi have those plans scrapped, and have Crossbones killed off after three minutes of screentime. So maybe Grillo had good reason to be sour.

I heard he might be up for the role of Rick Flag Sr. which I'm not so sure about because, I mean, he's not that much older than Joel Kinnaman (only 14 years). However, I do agree with some people who say he would be great as Deathstroke.

This reminds me of the story of how the producers of Gilligans Island told Tina Louise the show was about a movie star stranded with six other people. Or how the original Aunt Viv on Fresh Prince wasn't happy in her role. If you're not the title character temper you expectations. That said Cross Bones was under used.

MCU has under used a lot of Marvel characters. The direction the main storyline went, Crossbones wasn't really necessary. I felt the whole way they ended S.H.I.E.L.D. was a underuse of a great plotline but going down the Infinity War main story, it wasn't really needed.
