The previous home of Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal, the Late casino exec, mob leader and FBI informant who inspired the lead role of, Sam “Ace” Rothstein in the 1995 Movie casino is now listed. For the filming of the movie, they chose another home to represent Mr. & Mrs. Rosenthal's home.
Located at the Las Vegas Country Club, a triple guard gated community and located at 972 Vegas Valley, a homesite specifically chosen so Frank could see on coming traffic from both Vegas Valley and Augustra drive.
Lefty ran four casinos in Las Vegas including the Stardust. Other hotels he ran for the Chicago Mafia included the Hacienda, Marina and Fremont Casinos. He was the man who invented casino sports books and the first to hire female blackjack dealers. He eventually became blacklisted from every casino in Las Vegas. He was denied his gaming license because of his lifelong friend, Tony Spilotro.
After reportedly suffering extensive fire damage sometime in the 1970’s, the home was re-constructed. The interior was designed on trend by celebrity designer Stephen Chase, who at that time was with Arthur Elrod of Palm Springs. Commissioned art pieces still hang in the living and dining rooms. The smoked mirrors that hang in the living and bar area are now a piece of Vegas history, believed to come from the former Stardust itself. Although no longer existing, there was a secret passage way between this home and the neighbors that led to an empty safe - for those last minute get aways.
The courtyard entry and front doors are made of heavy steel and welcome you. Open the door and see the floating stairs and curved glass - which reportedly has a bullet hole still from when they tried to take a hit on Mr. Rosenthal.
Gold leafed ceiling accents above the dining room and brass rails in the hallway are original, some wallpaper has been nicely preserved and the sunken bar is also original.
Much of the home is as it was constructed. Originally built on a commercial level of construction, the home has bulletproof doors and windows, soundproofed rooms and commercial grade electrical systems. Accounts report that Frank used to watch casino camera activity from one of the bedrooms. The master bedroom, roughly 600 sq ft houses a wall of closets and additional storage space. Both Frank and his wife, Geraldine, loved their clothes with Lefty apparently owning over 200 pairs of pants himself. There is a closet that is temperature controlled in the living room designed for Geri’s fur collection.
Lefty died in 2008 in Miami from a heart attack.
Today the home is iconic and preserves a bit of Las Vegas history that is not long forgotten.
