Sinatra also won an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actor as well as numerous singing awards. Listening to him and his compatriots, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and others is like drinking a glass of great scotch, or a lovely fall day, whatever makes you happy.

I grew up in the 60's and 70's. Rock, Soul, R&B. In 1984 my uncle won tickets to see Frank at the Meadowlands in NJ. He offered my and my wife tickets. I was about 26. I laughed. "Come on Uncle SOnny....I ain't going to see that old man". My uncle told me the tickets came with free dinner. Sign me up. To make a long story short....the next day I was at Sam Ashe buying as many Sinatra Cassette tapes I could afford. I was blown away by his singing, his band, the whole vibe. I've been listening ever since. ANd here's what makes Sinatra like no other. He'll do the same song with 10 different arrangements...all different....all magnificent. Yeah, his voice was superb. But he taught me the difference between a voice and a singer. One of a kind. RIP Uncle Sonny.

There's good reason Frank was known as "The Voice." You should listen to his first hit record -- All Or Nothing At All by Harry James & His Orchestra, featuring Frank Sinatra, 1939. All or Nothing at All - RU-vid A few of my favorite Sinatra songs are I've Got The World On A String, Witchcraft, I've Got You Under My Skin, & Fly Me To The Moon (with the Count Basie Band). Such a huge library of songs, so many, many great ones!!!

My mom was a life-long fan of Sinatra. So much so that she used to cut school to go see him in his younger days performing at the Paramount Theater in New York City. And that was the 1930s. I grew to appreciate his voice as I got older. I saw him in his later years. His voice was not as strong, but he still performed well.

They don't make them like they used to. Frank Sinatra was such a smooth crooner. This is before auto tuning. Artists had to be really able to sing. And the lyrics were clean, romantic & really meant something. He has a huge library of great songs. Some of my favorites are "My Way", New York, New York", "Strangers In The Night", "I've Got You Under My Skin", "That's Life", "My Kind Of Town", "Summer Wind" etc.

Total classic. I grew up listening to stuff like Frank, Ella, Sarah Vaughan, Johnny Mathis, especially on Sunday afternoon listening sessions to my dad's faves of his remaining collection after emigrating from India to England in the early-mid 50s. His dad was a Brit customs official, he'd worked the docks or hired guys to work for him, all the while buying records from largely American merchant seamen.

Sinatra was the art of the cool. Give just a little bit, then let your audience fill in the rest. There's a loneliness in of all his work, it was there even when he was the most famous man in the world.

That is Sinatra-Basie, Frank Sinatra Live at the Sands. One of my favorite Count Basie albums and of Frank of course. One of the best Fly me to the Moon versions on it as well.

He was the best, but there were a few of them that wowed every time they sang. Tony Bennett, Dean Martin, Mel Torme, and the likes of Robert Goulet, Perry Como, Andy Williams. All crooners extraordinaire.

Read a great story once about Mel Torme( thanks for the mention.) He was hired for an outdoor show ,I believe in Finland. Left all planning to Mgt. Shows up for the concert & saw 80,00 gen-xer's. Totally freaked out. Was scheduled with all punk & metal bands. Wanted to kill his mgr. When it was his turn to play he wasn't sure what to do except go out & play . As he walked out & was announced,the crowd went insane. Turns out he had a hidden base among the young all over European kids. He could barely hold back the tears,got a standing "O" after every song. 3 encores. He said later it was his best show ever. GOOD STUFF!

Actually, it was pretty common back then to show off a song like this, by singing it live in a setting that was meant to enhance the song. There was a long period in television where they had variety shows that featured songs sung live (sometimes acted out like this one), and humorous sketches and stand-up routines and novelty acts. I'm sure this is from a variety show from the 1950s. By the late 1970s variety shows were pretty much finished. What's exceptional here isn't the format, but just how incredibly talented Sinatra was in both singing and acting - lot's of people did this sort of thing, but he was about as good as it gets.

I am really glad to see you react to a song really is among Frank's best, and not just the usual songs people choose. My favorite of this kind of song in his catalog is "Angel Eyes", with this probably second. Both stayed with him from his 1958 studio recordings of each on the album FRANK SINATRA SINGS FOR ONLY THE LONELY (among his very best work) until he retired in the '90s. Frank truly loved and connected deeply with both, and never failed to give wonderful performances of them. Shameless plug...I am fortunate to have worked on a few releases of Frank's. The first I was involved with is a four disc set of his radio material called A VOICE ON AIR (the online version is called SELECTIONS FROM as some of the material could only be licensed for the physical box). The lyrics of his songs remind me so much of Tom Waits, except Sinatra has a voice. Waits has the same type of words with a rough voice. Waits plays the piano as he sings very down to earth lyrics for those that have to sleep in the YMCA. TOM WAITS please find his music.

This would be from his television show in the 50’s. He was known as someone who sang with honesty and authority. You believed the song was his story. He was a singer who could act too. I guess it’s because of the interpretation and emotional expression that makes a good delivery of a song.
